If There Were No More DLC, Would You Keep Playing?

When GTAV was released, the mass exodus from GTAIV: Multiplayer finally happened, leaving it a barren wasteland of hangers-on, GTAIV purists, and nay-sayers who refused to abandon their status.

The time will come when Rockstar releases a new GTA game and the same exodus will likely occur.

Before that time come, we're still fortunate enough to be provided with DLC to keep our proverbial whistles wet, even if we're not fans of the content. Some aspects are fabulous while others are a chore or just over-priced.

But here's the scenario at hand: what if Rockstar simply stopped providing new DLC? The idea would be, "we're not releasing any further content to focus our resources on the development of a new product."

The "you've got everything you need; play with that" perspective would hit the community hard and players would have strong opinions on whether they'd stick around and enjoy what they have, or resort to putting GTAO on the shelf in favor of other entertainment outlets.

What about you? Would you continue to play GTAO if there were no more DLC to come?

If so, would it be at the same level of interest or immersion? Would your interest drop?
If not, what would be your interest in playing GTAO in the future?

As always, this is sheerly just curiosity and a question I was discussing with my kids, at home.

They have already shelved GTAO in favor of the new CoD, so I know where their interest would be on this.

Thanks for indulging. Cheers! :)

Nothing better than a fully stocked warehouse... Except when 75% is stolen while you're in an in-game challenge!

I would for 1-2 weeks, then pull the rip cord. There are plenty of ways to be entertained without being insulted.

No.I would play for a couple of months and eventually move on to a better game. DLCs are the only thing that keeps me coming back.

Hackers ruined the game for me on pc.. i can only play with my crew in empty sessions to be able to enjoy at least "some" of the game.. the pvp aspect is kinda dead right now.. there is at least 1 or 2 hackers per session which makes pvp obsolete..

If hackers were out of the question, then i would keep playing until a new game comes to replace it (a new game like gta, sandbox style with online), but for sure i would play it less, mostly with crewmates to make them come to the point they want to be (things they would want to have).

And that would be it, since i can't enjoy my hard earned vehicles and such in pvp due to modders and in less regard toxic players, then there is no use trying to.

Probably not, as a day-1 player.

I own pretty much everything I want to own. I’ve accomplished pretty much everything I want to accomplish. I’ve explored and memorized the map.

I don’t find PvP enjoyable, in general; and I’ve done all the PvE things.

I already “retired” once by blowing cash on pointless things (like three gold aircraft) when I was shutting down my account on PS3 when I wasn’t planning on getting a PS4.

I'd slowly have less and less to test and if there's any more nonsense from Rockstar Games (like taking away legit players money or random banning) then that will be the last straw for me.

Yeah Ari, the situation on PC is bad - you know there's even people who haven't played GTA Online for a long time, and only since new cheat/ mod menus [scripts] have come out in the last few weeks or months, they've started playing again? Leaves me in a position to say "understandable" but "pathetic" at the same time.

Maybe. GTA is still on of the rare games I play, it completely took my eyes off the market. But it depends if the triple A game market will still be as bad as right now and if my friends will keep playing. I really enjoy the game, with friends probably until the next installment will distract me from it and without friends and without updates I'll probably stop gaming altogether until VI, and if VI will be bad I'll probably take a looong break from videogames, forget and never come back.

The most recent DLCs have moved the game away from its historical strengths (IMHO), so I've already given it up. It just doesn't appeal to me anymore.

That said, I'd view if they stopped supporting it as allowing it a merciful death rather than continuing to flog it with rehashed mechanics and expensive digital pixels to push stinky fish cards. Under the current paradigm, it's already dead. The new content just pushes those aforementioned stinky fish cards. The evolution of it as a gaming experience died some time ago.

Cheers.

I play more or less everyday, I just love this game and all the different ways I can play it. When I'm lonewolfing I try to play/move/drive as realistic as possible. If I'm with a bunch of friends I enjoy doing CEO/MC-work or depending on the friends I play with I can on occasion enjoy a full war :D

But mostly I cruise and only fire if I'm fired upon.

There's so many goodlooking or fun vehicles to fool around with.

So yes I will keep playing as long as possible.

Since GTAO is a big success to make profit, also, players had been build their own character up for 4 years, they wont just leave so easy, in this case I guess c* is trying not to end the game as long as possible, all data from GTAO can be transfer to the next generation, or share the same online system with GTA6, so dont worry, they will only end this success with a greater success.

Depends, really - there's so much that they haven't done yet, ranging from the 'it'd be nice eventually!' (custom imports/muscle being the biggie for me), through 'think of all the untapped potential!' (maybe doing something new with Freemode gameplay, beyond just minor thematic variations on what they added with things like Bikers), up to 'give me a sign you actually care about this aspect of your games, R*...' (i.e., finally getting their act together regarding character customisation).

Frankly, I've been so underwhelmed/frustrated by things like Gunrunning and Smuggler's Run, and what the implications are for how R* approaches, say, the online components of RDR2 and GTA VI, that what does/doesn't make it into the game by the time R* calls it quits won't just determine if I'll be of a mind to keep playing GTAO, but also how likely I am to buy those future titles. The optimist in me holds out hope that I'll be pleasantly surprised in the next year or so, and I'll be throwing pre-order funbucks at the screen for Grand Theft Horse Online... :p

Yeah, I would probably play it about as much as I play it now, so every now and then.

Yeah the modders are back in full force.. and to think we had times where almost none could be seen.. nowadays it's filled, and filled with the toxic ones.. not the ones that just spawn things and give money.. but the ones that use that to their advantage.. godmode.. teleportation, aimbot, etc..

I played GTA4 MP from april 2008 until the release of GTA5 in 2013

During these 5 years GTA4 had 2 DLCs, so YES I would play it without updates.

I would play it another way like now, but I would play it

Yes, I'd carry on as I do now. New DLC is simply a supplement to my existing gameplay.

I like that we still get new content and for free*, but my enjoyment of the game is independent of whatever's coming down the pipeline. While the map isn't new any more it's very detailed and the fictional world Rockstar created in Los Santos/Blaine County still seems very fleshed out. I do have my fair share of critiques, sure, but the existing vehicles, weapons, gamemodes, etc, have provided enough variety to the sandbox to satiate me.

I actively use alot of older content very regularly. Just yesterday, for example, I drove my Felon, used my Special Carbine in random battles, went to the Weazel Plaza apartment and did some contact missions in between battling the police. Granted that wasn't everything I did, but all of those things could've been done back in 2013. Much of the existing content has alot of replay value and if it didn't then the prospect of new DLC would be hollow anyway.

I'd still play though not likely as much as now.

For me the updates and event weeks encourage people to play and make the lobbies fill up faster. I'll play all kinds of game modes if I can just jump right in. For me it's waiting 5+ mins to fill a lobby that kills the mood for me.

I'm more inclined to say that I would perhaps play more if it weren't for the latest batch of DLCs. The poorly executed, business oriented free roam endeavours soured the game for me, as it took a heavy toll on the overall feel and flow of the game I once enjoyed. Cunning Stunts was salt in the wound; it completely killed the racing aspect for me and introduced a bug (that will likely never be fixed) which destroyed hours upon hours of work that many of us had devoted to creating custom tracks.

At this point though, no. R* cannot rewind time, so new DLCs or not, my interest will likely continue to decline regardless of what happens next. One thing is for certain though, I am not interested in grinding to buy content for this game. Let's say that I spend an entire evening doing repetitive, mind-numbing sales within a public lobby so that I can buy *insert random vehicle* from the latest DLC. After I've bought it, now what? Shall I just fly or drive it around aimlessly within that same lobby, only to get blown to oblivion by some kid with an explosive sniper or Hydra who, without a doubt, will either abuse passive, use EWO when they take even a hint of damage, or spam me with an endless amount of horribly incoherent insults that I need a goddamned translator to decipher?

Yeah, no thanks.

My answer might have been different if the content worked well, had a sense of balance, and made sense, but as time progresses, it all just seems to be more about quantity over quality. Fewer DLCs and an eventual end would have been better, especially given the direction they just had to take. Sigh.

Great question, and yes I would continue to play. For me it is much more than just the DLCs.

If there were no new DLC, I could finally catch up with purchases, lol :D

If R* stop releasing content, players will do it for them. There are tons of custom jobs to play.

I'll keep playing unless it will be possible to play Online with mods.

Yes. The rockstar editor on console keeps me playing.

That's an excellent point and an option I, personally, have yet to explore!

Heck, I still haven't played the single player mode!! LOL!! :)

Ahh yeah definitely give the SP a go - I'm sure you'll like some of the dynamics and missions used.

I'd probably just log on to play with the Hunter and nothing else. I'd certainly never touch any businesses ever again.

My crew is what keeps me playing. If I'd be playing the game solo, or purely for the content, I would have probably stopped long time ago.

It's the events, banter and fun that keeps me playing. Whatever gamemode/activity it is, really.

I've witnessed so many players come and go. Once R* stops releasing new DLC that will once get worse. The majority plays this game as a grind. Doing CEO/MC sales over and over (used to be heists, and contact missions before that), and only bothering any other gamemode if it's double $+RP. Simply because you have to if you want to purchase those pricey items. It's difficult to find enough players for gamemodes such as regular races or (non 2x$+RP) adversary modes. Being part of an actual community is what can keep it interesting.

That said, can't wait for the announcement of GTAVI! Hopefully no crappy extended waits like last time (I'm on PC ;)).
