To be fair, it was less a case of 'took more effort' than it was of 'sometimes took multiple attempts.' Going the cheap route has always been more or less rolling the dice on whether or not a Rhino gets a bead on you before you're airborne or not.

In the Beforetime we would forage for the Magic Snow, so that the Great One Gerald would be pleased and reward us with pennies and scorn. Our arms were weak but our hearts burned with righteousness and we laboured until the Assault Rifle was ours. But then the demon, Hungry Cloud, devoured our characters and our really nice Dominator. We wept bitterly and the minions of C*ckstar said unto us, “Sucks to be you.”

 

In the Free Realm, playa and noob alike would flee from the Iron Rhino, Devourer of Stickies. Then a bold warrior would venture far to the north and liberate the Boom Boom Bird from the prison called Zancudo. The Bird would vanquish the Rhino and the people were joyful. However, the Boom Boom Bird’s blood lust could not be sated and it would turn its fiery urine upon us. And we would cry to the heavens, “Oh merciful C*ckstar, grant unto us a homing launcher so we might know salvation”, for we were stupid then and knew not what we said.

 

After the great tribulation came the money rains. The people were happy and the streets were filled with Adders. And we said unto Pegasus, “Take our gold and bestow unto us many buses and the Dump”. Then the people were angry and cried “It dumpeth not – now I must scroll through all this sh!t to attain my Buzzard.”

 

Angered by the people’s ingratitude, the Great C*ckstar took their money and said, “You have displeased us greatly. Therefore, we shall inflict upon you the Marksman Rifle so you shall be condemned to wiggle and endure unsatisfactory PVP for all eternity.”

Back in the day we had contact missions that payed well and was the only way to make money that was fun to do. More laid back as well.

 

People had different type of cars on the street instead of the same ones you see this day.

 

Car shows were better back then and people threw parties through the mic with their drinks in their hands.

 

The Tanks was like a Hydra that could not be stopped with ease.

 

Players could still kill you even when you are in passive mode and they had to pay your hospital bills by ramming you over with cars.

 

When you could half way trust randoms that also had the similar goal you had.

So, apart from technical issues and limited contents (considering how many we have now), for what I've read it used to be more fun than now. Contact missions as major source of income and never worrying about $ must have been great.

It took days to get that first apartment, and maybe, if you ground hard, a Bullet to put in the garage. You wondered why you were stuck just being a small-time crook, knocking over liquor stores and stealing a kilo of coke for a short guy in a bad neighborhood, instead of being that guy.

 

You were Tony Montana just as he was getting out of the sandwich shop, just hoping for the money and the power. We all were. And now that we have it, we realize that nothing will sate that burning hunger within us, that all that money is just paper. We mindlessly run our businesses, open new ones, make more and more money, buy more and more superficial things, and yet it does not make us happy. And now we're just waiting for the end, for some Bolivian hitmen to crash through the door and let us at least end proudly, in an orgy of blood and gunfire.

 

The hitmen will not come. We are left in this purgatory.

 

2013 was the same, except there was some universal false hope that more money would make it better.

Didn't the mechanic actually used to pull up and deliver the car himself? Or did I just dream this?

he did, but he usually messed up our cars or started fights with our characters or worst he just drove off with our cars and sometimes drove them to paleto bay.
