  • The story along with the characters, especially Niko and Dimitri.
  • The storyline missions. (yes, indeed)
  • Euphoria.
  • Physics.
  • Combat and shooting mechanics.
  • Driving mechanics.
  • A.I.
  • The small details in everything.

This.

  • The story and the characters, especially Niko, Roman, Brucie.
  • The storyline missions.
  • The Euphoria or sadness after some missions (with the music).
  • Physics.
  • Combat and shooting mechanics.
  • Driving mechanics.
  • A.I.
  • The small details in the hole city, the game.

Adding graphics too. Oh, and the music! The radio stations are really good and I've got to know a lot of songs I still like to this day!

But yeah the storyline really sticks with me. I loved it. Hell, I still do! Really enjoyed and like GTA IV. :)

The whole game is so satisfying that it's hard to pin things down.

  • The story, Niko's background & conflicted personality.
  • Interaction between the different characters, their random comments about my driving, the cops, or other stuff.
  • Niko's facial expressions & body language in cutscenes.
  • Driving in general, but especially long complex car chases with the cops.
  • The way pedestrians talk with one another, fight each other, have phone conversations, and generally seem 'alive'.
  • Seeing motorcycle riders flip through the air when hit with a car at high speed. 😈
  • The way that the distance from an explosion, size of something we drive over, etc. is perfectly matched by controller vibration.

Or in short, all of the millions of tiny details that make GTA IV seem almost more like a window into a living world than just a game.

A little thing that I find satisfying is making Securicar vans explode and collecting the cash. Preferably by making the engine catch on fire by repeated crashing, using Packie's car bomb or parking it next to a petrol pump and throwing a brick/other object at the petrol pump to make it explode rather than using weapons so there's no cops. There's just such a ridiculous number of separate bits of cash to pick up strewn all over the road. Don't think I've ever seen so much any other time in GTA, there almost isn't time to get it all before it disappears. Regardless of the actual amount it adds up to (although at a maximum of about $10,000 depending on what point in the game it is it's not too shabby) it's just fun running around collecting it . And the classic cash pick up sound effect is the icing on the cake.

I haven't tried using the petrol pump trick for that, I'll have to try it tonight... Though on my copy, if a cop walks/drives by when a vehicle I've been driving explodes, they almost always radio it in as "on fire" and give me a one-star wanted level even if I'm hiding.

Hmm I haven't had that. I find I strictly have to have committed some sort of crime while causing an explosion to get a wanted level. This includes if the crime was committed before the cops saw me (eg if I shoot at the engine to set the car on fire but cops don't see me and I don't get a wanted level, when the explosion happens I will get a wanted level even if it takes ages to explode), or if I call Kiki to get rid of a wanted level after damaging/exploding a car with weapons but before subsequent explosions (eg throw grenade into traffic, get wanted level, call Kiki and lose it, more cars explode in the chain = another wanted level).

I've heard it's possible to get a wanted level by repeatedly ramming another vehicle and damaging it/injuring the ped inside. I haven't been able to get this to happen myself (and I deliberately ram other vehicles to injure the peds inside all the time lol) but if that's true maybe that would be a reason to get a wanted level when it explodes. But I think if you only ram walls/other objects until the vehicle sets on fire, use Packie's bomb or cause a petrol pump/gas canister to explode by throwing an object at it you're good however many more explosions it causes, even if it includes blowing up police/police cars. That's how it is for me anyway, I guess it could vary though.

this game is still a visual masterpiece to this year, and gameplay too, wondering if this game will ever get old.
