Most satisfying thing about GTA IV for you?

Playing as Niko is probably the most satisfying thing, he's just such an awesome character to play as and everything he says is gold. That and the physics/mechanics of driving, shooting etc, everything has the right weight to it and is so complex and detailed and looks and feels great.

Thing? Hard to pick just one thing. There're many things:

  • The story along with the characters, especially Niko and Dimitri.
  • The storyline missions. (yes, indeed)
  • Euphoria.
  • Physics.
  • Combat and shooting mechanics.
  • Driving mechanics.
  • A.I.
  • The small details in everything.

But if I really wanted to pick, there's a chance that it'll be the Euphoria, maybe.

The shooting mechanics. I've said it before,  IV has the best shooting mechanics in GTA imo. I like how loud and visceral the gunshots sound, makes shootouts really engaging. The shooting feels tight  (there feels like there's weight behind the gunshots) and impactful due to the fact that peds actually react to where they got shot.  Even the little things like being able to shoot the gun out of the enemies hand is a nice touch.

Here's some things I found satisfying.

-Niko Bellic: I know, it sounds gay when I say it in this context (lol), but I honestly really liked him from a protagonist point of view.

-Shooting mechanics: As stated above, I love the shooting mechanics in this game. You can go rampaging all day long if you wanted to in this game.

-Driving mechanics: Best driving in a game hands down imo. I've never had a problem with IV's driving, so don't get why people criticize it. It is what it is though...

-Graphics: Still hold up til this day after 11 years. R* is the best at making their games visually great. Just look at RDR 2 or GTA V for example.

Oh wait I know the most satisfying thing of all: knocking someone out with the spinning back fist combo

There’s so many things, I don’t even know where to begin!

Let’s see...

Memorable storyline missions and characters.

The mechanics in driving, combat, and shooting.

The fact that there’s so much southern/eastern European, Caribbean, Asian, and biker influence in Liberty City.

Kinda off-topic, but in relation to the last one, as I’ve said before, I’m not even ethnically southern or eastern European, but I bet a lot of my GTA IV/EFLC fans are either from there or enthusiastic of those cultures! :) Also, about the Asian influence, I really think there should have been the yakuza in addition to the triads and North Korean mobsters. That could’ve made the storyline even longer. Sorry but I’m just never ready for GTA IV’s storyline to be over it’s so good!

There's a great satisfaction when you hit peds in a vehicle and hear the "thud" they make. I know that's probably a bit twisted lol, but it always feels satisfying.😛

In addition, when you hit a vehicle and a ped flies out the window (bonus points if Niko also flies out of his window)

I remember when I was first driving across the East Borough Bridge, I was helping Roman out taking a fare to Bohan. So there I am, driving reasonably speedy head bopping to Evil Woman. Suddenly, a notification popped up about paying the toll. I slammed on the breaks and my passenger exclaimed “what the f*ck man?!” As my attention returned to the game I saw cars ahead forming a que, so I joined it an waited my turn while I processed this. I am sat at the back of a que of traffic, horns from both sides are beeping. My passenger is getting impatient and wants to know what the hold up is.

I am in awe at this entire event, this city was real. The people were real. For a moment I thought screw it i’m gonna drive through, but I hesitated. I was working for Roman here, I wanted Niko to help him out like a good cousin, not disappoint him by getting chased by the cops in the middle of the simplest of tasks. I wondered what Niko might say to Roman if I got chased or shot at, or if his arrogant yet harmelss passenger ended up in an unfortunate taxi explosion. So I decided to wait, by now I was at the front of the cue and Phil Collins was part way through Genesis Mama. I paid the toll and delivered the passenger safely but driving back I was reflecting on what could've happened. That passenger had no idea who was driving that taxi, or how close he came to being on tomorrow night’s Weazel News reports. Similarly Roman’s cheerful response to a job well done was strangely disturbing, if he only knew what his cousin was seconds away from doing earlier.

Roman ended up inviting Niko for drink later that day and we got wasted at Comrades, that might not have happened if I hadn’t waited at the bridge. Ever since, paying the toll for me is like a ritual. More games should have tolls.

Walking through the streets and just feeling small. The liveliness of the streets and the AI. They just nailed that NYC feel so well. Liberty City in this game is one of the best and most detailed maps I've ever played in, I really wish it'd get the remaster treatment. I couldn't begin to imagine how amazing it would look with current generation graphics.

This is one of the only GTA games where I'll happily walk around just because of the City. I did the same in Watch Dogs 2 a non-GTA game, because San Francisco was so well done.

The atmosphere, the euphoria physics, the driving and just how great the story is. By the time you start working with Pegorino whilst wearing expensive suits, you really feel like you're inside a Sopranos episode. I never felt like a mafioso in any other game but GTA IV, Mafia 1 and 2.

If you hang around LittleItaly you can hEAR this guy say "I need a new tracksuit" and "that last episode was bullsh*t"

Probably the most satisfying GTA to date. Certainly the most fluid.

I think it was the perfect sweet spot between the older GTA games and GTA V, which for whatever reason had an arcade driving style. There was nothing quite like threading the needle in a traffic jam in Star Junction, or hitting the apex after the bridge on the Round the Block circuit.

Niko's and pedestrian's physics were also a lot more fluid. Like someone mentioned, there was something super satisfying about running over an enormous crowd of pedestrians. I don't think any GTA game has had me driving around the beach aimlessly just for the joy of running over small crowds and watching them fly over my windshield. I think this also applies to the combat system, and ragdoll in its entirety. It worked perfectly when you could gun down an enemy's legs and watch them topple off a ledge or down a flight of stairs.

The city and environment is pretty satisfying also. The game still holds up to today's standards in terms of creating a living, breathing city. The lights of Algonquin and the dingey pubs and bars of Hove Beach are highlights for me.

To this day I still find myself strolling the sidewalks of Star Junction. Horns honking, cabs on nearly every corner (as it is in real life Times Square), NPCs walking about and crossing the street. I love Star Junction during a gloomy rainy in-game day as well. I try to find the Superstar Cafe when the rain starts falling and just walk around in there or maybe I hit up the Cluckin Bell down the block. I just like soaking in the atmosphere. I’ll hail a cab or maybe head down the road to the subway station that is also located in Star Junction and head to my next destination.

I have to agree that just soaking in the atmosphere of the city in IV is so satisfying. I was taking a cab from north to south Algonquin on a dark grey day and decided not to skip or hurry, ended up getting stuck behind a garbage truck for part of the journey so it was a slow one, and hearing the cab driver chatting and complaining, people in other cars getting pissed off about being stuck in traffic, honking horns/complaining about honking horns, pedestrian's comments as they walked by and the ambient sounds of the city, as well as watching the first person view of passing through the different areas filled with so much going on during the journey. And it was more satisfying than anything I can think of in another GTA game

Rain in the evening.

It was the only time when I thought "Hey, the graphics actually look good". You could almost smell that rain, especially driving slowly around that Small Korea area of the third island, with bleak streetlighting, empty streets and rain pouring down from the night sky, all by yourself. I almost wished that umbrellas were in the game, so that I could leave the car.

But once the rain was over that was it, satisfaction - gone.

For a game released in 2008, I thought it was pretty great. No need to get so angry.

Angry. im not angry.

Since youbrought up 2008 I am gonna bring up saints row 2, look at how lively this place is.

Watch Dogs games I truly enjoy just walking around, numerous random things that happen, so much to see, so much to do. Rockstar Games has something to learn from that.

The dark, gritty, and mature nature of the trilogy.

I played it when I was like 10 and was never really understood the vibes this game gave off, thought it was pretty boring.

Now that I’m older, oh boy this game is such a masterpiece in terms of story. It really is the truest GTA game of the entire series.

Explosions in this game are very satisfying, especially grenades and (in TLAD) pipe bombs, they just have such a powerful feel to them. The throwing/rolling animations, the way you can cook them, the look and sound of the explosion itself, the scary unpredictable burning debris flying around, the effect on cars, peds and Niko himself if he gets caught in it staggering back, being thrown to the ground or ear ringing and temporary deafness. Random explodable items like gas canisters and petrol pumps also explode with a lot of power, and helicopter explosions are very cool looking and unpredictable as are chain reaction traffic explosions. Really fun and satisfying.

Driving down highways or long roads at high speeds in something like a blista compact, the blur effect that happens just makes it feel so smooth.

Gotta agree, however TBOGT disappointed me in this aspect by changing the explosion sound. It sounds like a weak cartoon "poof" rather than the crazy explosion sound from IV/TLAD. Luckily I modded it out 😜

The feel of the city. I have not played any GTA game before or after that captures the big city feel so perfectly. I live in London, UK and sometimes when I am walking on Edgware Road or on a stroll near Leicester square I feel like the ambience is the same like that of the game. even the random crazies irl act the same way as they do in the game haha

Also even though it's been done to death before I love how you start out as a fob immigrant in a sh*t part of town a slowly work your way up to playboys penthouse suite in North Holland and Algonquin's rich upper east side

Yeah exactly the same with me

When I played the game first time back in 08 I was 17 and really did not see it as much of an upgrade to GTA:SA other then graphics. My first replay was in 2012 and that's when I started to LOVE the game. So much so that I really class it as my favorite GTA of all time when factors like storyline, ambience, general gameplay and satisfaction are taken into consideration.
