Can I keep other players out of my session-split solo session?

I am reading up http://gtaforums.com/topic/861318-the-lone-wolf-guide-to-the-ceo-cargo-trade/ (kudos to the guy and those like him, by the way), and I came upon the passage about causing my session to split. I do not plan on ever using third-party apps to do this (too meta/bothersome and i don't want to risk messing up net connection for my family), but the 4k video method seems simple enough.

Okay, so lets say that I managed to log into a split session. Can I do anything to keep people from joining it? Do I have to keep the videos playing in the background? Also, what if I want to be a not-so-lone wolf and try to play with my friend but no one else? Too hard to do or is there a way? I am a PC player.

If on PS4, set your MTU to 700. Invite a friend on normal MTU. When he joins, you'll both split. Set your MTU back to 1500 and rejoin your friend in the solo public session.

Edit: sorry didn't realize it said PC :p

He said he's a PC player, but you can do a similar thing with the settings on your router.

There's certain ports you can block. I played with another player for awhile whilst doing the port blocking thing and nobody would join us for hours but that was a while back. Not sure though if its still relevant for PC though as I haven't done a solo public session for some time now.

So once the Co-op session is complete, everybody enables the firewall and no randoms can join?

We should try this again, i remember that sometimes people lost connection.

It's important to stay in the lobby and to not start contact missions, races or such.

yeah, that Hunter dude made a great guide.

Look on google "white-listing", its how you can ban all IP but those of your friends. You have to know their IP, and add those IP in your firewall setting.

Thanks, I will, although I doubt I'll do it if it requires messing with router. Again, kinda afraid of screwing up Internet connection for the rest of the fam.

You can set up rule on your PC's firewall, there's a guide on reddit.

Basically, you block outgoing connections to 4-5 UDP-Ports so your PC can't connect to R* matchmaking servers i think.

Edit:

https://www.reddit.com/r/gtaonline/comments/4n8094/tip_if_you_are_on_pc_block_these_ports_using_your/?sort=new

It's 6672, 61455, 61457, 61456, 61458 UDP

And yes, blocking these ports generally in the router firewall could potentially impact other clients connection if their application happens to use the same ports (although you can limit the rule to apply your PC's IP only) .

Yeah so this is how I normally do it:

I've got the outbound ports blocked so when I join I'm in my own public session. Once I send an invite to an online friend, they can join my session but nobody else can. It's like "invite only" but you're in public. It doesn't seem to work the other way though - so once that friend was in the session, if they sent invites out, other players couldn't join (and it was a requirement on my part to send out the invites so they could join).

If that doesn't work then all players can enable the firewall rule once their in a session (where the session host is also blocking the same ports) and that should have the same effect.

This is strange, as when i got the blocking rule enabled (as mentioned, windows firewall), only my GF's PC on the same LAN can join ( i guess the P2P are still open so this works, but other friends from the internet cannot join, regardless of who of us invites them.

We have found a workaound for this: I create a solo session, my GF joins. then i leave and she is left with a public 1 player session and everybody else can join and i get back to her. Disadvantage is that the session fills up after some time.

Ahh good shout, I'll have to check if that computer I use actually has some whitelist software on instead then as it could be that.

Yeah trying to quash that disadvantage is the main thing really - preventing other people from ever joining the session unless you want them to. I suppose once there's a couple in there though, you could make use of the kick function. But then I'd guess we'll see another "kicked for no reason" thread on GTA Forums every other week :p

I remember the guy with a Pony on the avatar suggested an excellent way to have a solo public session on PC.

Yes, other players can still connect to you eventually, but you can easily repeat the process every time someone joins

The best thing is that you don't have to mess up with your network settings or a firewall.

1) Download Process Explorer:

https://docs.microsoft.com/en-us/sysinternals/downloads/process-explorer

2) Start GTA:O

3) Alt+TAB

4) launch PExplorer

5) Right click the GTA5.exe -> Suspend

6) Wait 10 seconds

7) Right click the GTA5.exe -> Resume

8) ALT+TAB back to GTA Online.

Wait some time in game. If you still see players, just repeat the process with a longer period of time.

However, personally I enjoy doing business in populated sessions even if it's risky. If you are doing stuff solo, prepare some audio to listen - otherwise you will be bored very soon.

That sounds very promising and, importantly, simple. I will try it and let you know how it works. As for boredom, yesterday I had great luck of finding an almost solo session. For five hours it was just me and one other guy, each one doing their own CEO work. Maybe three people have joined and quickly left in the meantime. By Odin's beard, it was so great... I was just making money with Vehicle Warehouse. No stress, worries, just me, in-game radio and cha-ching.

Also, when in point 2 you say: Start GTA:O, do you mean starting GTA5 exe, or selecting Online in the game's main menu?

Doesn't matter, but you should be in the public session before proceeding to step 2

Note: You do not need to download PE if you are running Win8/10. Even though PE is "kind of MS-supported", and is a great tool that I recommend (can be run off a USB stick, does not need to be installed), WindowsTask Manager>Resource Monitor now incorporates suspend and resume process functions. Can't remember if Win 7 can do it too.

I have tried this method today. I got into a populated session, launched the program and everyone disappeared. I do not know if it works for longer periods of time, but I played for half an hour and no one joined. Seems like it works. Thank you!
