Things GTA IV/EFLC did better than GTA San Andreas

The beauty of IV is that Niko is at the core of the game and everything revolves around him. In SA the ridiculous 'everything but the kitchen sink' mountain of content they threw in the game was the core, and CJ was simply inserted into it. In IV everything was conceived and crafted specifically to match Niko, his experience, and his environment. All the clothes he can wear make sense. All the vehicles he has access to make sense. The activities he can do make sense. Sometimes games are thought of in terms of width and depth. SA was very wide but had almost no depth, it was broad and shallow like a reflection pool. IV was far less wide but each aspect had far more depth, more like a lake. The thought that went into IV, and the depth, consistency, and quality they managed to achieve is why it stands head and shoulders above SA.

Took the words right out of my mouth sir.

I've often described San Andreas as being as wide as an ocean, but deep as a puddle. GTA IV is the opposite. Not quite as wide in scope, but a much deeper, better and more cohesive game.

Niko’s nose is much more admirable than CJ’s, so that’s a bit +1 for IV.

I’m also glad silly weapons like the mini gun weren’t present. The weapon roster we got on the base game works and every weapon has a practical utility, unlike SA with dildos and flowers (which aren’t truly weapons)

Since I also added EFLC into the mix...

-TLAD's gang wars > the f*cking annoying gang territories in San Andreas. "Your hood is under attack" argh.

-Luis is a better fighter than CJ out of the box and doesn't need to learn different fighting moves. Default CJ is such a worthless weakling.

-I feel more attached to my brothers in The Lost when they die than the many nameless Grove Street gangbangers no one cares about  TLAD does the whole "gang" thing so much better.

Guys, I've had GTA 4 and EFLC for years on PC but it's a ghost town there so I'm considering getting the PS3 version to play at glorious 640p 25 fps if there's still people playing online there!

So guys, are there still players in GTA 4 and EFLC on PS3 in 2019? That's the only reason I'd buy this game again for PS3 so please tell me! Thanks.

Since EFLC has been added into the mix:

  • Johnny & Luis > CJ.
  • Billy > Tenpenny. TLAD's story is very short, sure (but I find it more entertaining than San Andeas' anyway), but I personally prefer Billy when it comes to personality, and the fact that he started as a close friend and ended up being the main enemy, to me, does more than a corrupt cop who has been a straight douche and a blackmailer since the very beginning up to the final scene.
  • The Lost & Angels of Death > Families & Ballas.
  • TLAD's gang wars & TBOGT's drug wars > San Andreas' territory gang warfare.
  • TLAD's bike races & TBOGT's triathlons > Any race side-mission San Andreas has to offer.
  • TBOGT's fight club > San Andreas' gyms.

I have to say I do like how you can pick up dildos in the sex shops and throw them at people in IV though (and even attack Dimitri with them in Do You Have Protection if you want lol), and how there's a little SA easter egg of purple dildos found in piles of rubbish in Alderney. Funny little nod to the GTA dildo obsession without being over the top about it. But yes the weapons in IV are really cool and awesome, no need for silly ones.

This is why I love GTA IV so much. Despite its gritty exterior it still allows room for the most subtle humour/pisstakes. Most people probably wouldn't even think about picking up the dildos and throwing them at NPCs lol. Next time throw one at an NPC so they get pissed off and watch them being arrested by the cops.:D

Speaking of triathlons, TBOGT has the only good triathlons in the series imo. Parachutes, boats and sports cars are just way better than running, swimming and bicycles. Shame V decided to regress in that regard (and ended up having the worst ones thanks to HD era's changed run/sprint mechanics).

But tbh, considering the extreme lack of difficulty in IV/TLAD's standard/bike races (maybe I'll fix it one day by giving opponents overpowered versions of existing vehicles), I'd have to go with San Andreas ones. But Multiplayer wise, IV/TLAD 4 life.

Throwing dildos is the best way to start off a huge gang/police battle in Hove Beach or a big thing involving loads of police and a traffic jam/cars exploding in Star Junction :D

I beat the main story of IV back in early or mid 2018 on the PlayStation 3, so yeah...I still play it.

Dimitri is a far better antagonist than Tenpenny. I hate Tenpenny not because I'm supposed to, but he's simply not that good of a character when you really think about it.

He's a lazy cliché ripped straight from a typical cop drama. I've always felt Pulaski is the better of the two, but he's treated like a side kick. Dimitri's betrayal feels more natural and personal since it's as much of a betrayal towards the player as it is with Niko. I like that he doesn't overstay his welcome and whilst he moves towards the background it helps preserve his character so the inevitable showdown felt like the wait was worth it.

I got sick of Tenpenny showing up sporadically and wondered why CJ didn't just put a cap in his dome because it was going to happen sooner than later anyway, but Tenpenny's death is just so anticlimactic. He doesn't even try to fight CJ. YAWN!!!!!!

I have to agree, I've never liked Tenpenny as a character very much. By the end I didn't even care about him dying, it was just like "Oh, okay.." The only good thing about Tenpenny is Samuel L. Jackson, that's it. Anybody else voiced him, and I doubt he'd even be remembered at all.

Heck, the YouTube Poop's of San Andreas are better than the game itse- Whoops! Wrong statement. I meant to say that Dimitri is far more intimidating and does a better job being a villain than Tenpenny does. Heck, Catalina is a better antagonist than Tenpenny.

Officer Tenpenny? More like Official Deadpenny...I make terrible jokes/puns... :(

Did Tenpenny really need to fight CJ back in the final cutscene? I actually thought the ending of SA was fitting the way it is.

Also the rain in SA looks like static noise, even III and VC had better rain.

The fact that it features screen blood splashes, which often appear when the player shoots an NPC that's close to him, or when they're shot. Not to mention the screen water splashes that appear during rain.

I'm glad that they don't look cartoony as they were in Vice City as well.

The fact that not only the player is able to climb in ledges, but NPCs as well.

As for swimming, it's kinda similar. NPCs can swim, but they run out of breath faster than the player. In San Andreas however, only beach pedestrians and recruited gang members (including mission allies) can swim, while every other NPC (including cops and gang members) can't hold for a second.

There're no beach NPCs in GTA IV, though, obviously, because the beach is clearly inactive during autumn.

San Andreas beach NPCs = people in swimsuits and shades

IV beach NPCs = hobos

I don't see what GTA 4 does better than GTA San Andreas outside the physics and graphics. The rest sucked, so i sold GTA 4, to buy SR2 instead.

Why not both. It's not like they're expensive to begin with.

Graphics, which is important in a way. With games like RDR2, we see there’ll be a time San Andreas will look too awful to be played. Gta IV on the other hand does a much better job than San Andreas and gives more reasons still to play it. Not that San Andreas is awful or unplayable. however even Gta III had better graphics which may come as a surprise.

I don't wanna be controversial, but the fanbase by a long shot. If you ever say anything even remotely bad about SA, people will gangbang you like you said something bad about their dead mom.

At least on YouTube, I have no idea how it's like here.

I can see this being true for the obvious objective technical improvements like graphics, physics etc, but I think it's more interesting to peel back the things that are more subjective like for example GTA IV doesn't have all the crappy, occupational side missions from San Andreas that felt like "padding" which I'd consider an "improvement" or random characters as a substitute for the stupid "ped interaction".😉

I really don't get your disdain towards the ped interaction feature. I'm pretty sure if was a feature originally added to GTA IV, you would name it as a pro against SA not having it (also think it would fit GTA IV more in general though). I'm also pretty sure if GTA SA was the only GTA to have items you could pickup from the ground and GTA IV didn't have it, you would call it a random gimmicky feature of SA.

It doesn't. That's a fact. The ped models, weapons, car interiors, building exteriors, and more all look better in SA (with the exception of some of the stuff present in the mobile version).
