Legion of Hell

Things GTA IV/EFLC did better than GTA San Andreas

You know what I noticed when I played through GTA SA on the PS4 earlier this year? Most of the clothes in the game are f*cking terrible.

Very few clothes look decent. GTA IV might have less, but atleast nothing looks stupid on Niko. Oh and as I said above it doesn’t take him 500 years to change a shirt like CJ.

You can do a drive-by shooting in 360 now rather than just looking left and right and shooting, which was treacherous

Now you mention it GTA IV also let us throw out grenades and moltovs from the drive by position.

Dider Sachs or whatever the Perseaus equivalent is in SA was such a disappointment. Tweed bullsh*t and green suits, just awful. In IV none of the clothes are goofy looking, it's enough to go through the story and change outfits every day.

The controls. I wish I could change them in SA, maybe then I'd be able to play the game like a competent human.

The fanboyism is strong with this thread, but here's my go:

  • moral decisions
  • better storyline
  • Liberty City feels way more detailed than Los Santos, San Fierro or Las Venturas
  • DLC
  • believable characters
  • different approaches to missions
  • oh and the missions - I wouldn't say they are 100% better than the ones from San Andreas, but they surely do a great job at entertaining you without being too over the top
  • friends and girlfriends system
  • side missions that actually have some storyline (any side character from GTA IV > quarry and valet missions from SA)
  • immersive surroundings - hell, GTA IV was the only GTA in which acting like a normal citizen felt satisfying to me

Niko doesn't need to eat to stay alive and get fat. I always thought this was a dumb and pointless gimmick in San Andreas.

Oh look CJ can get fat lolz. So cool.

It should be kept simple as an alternative to gaining health. That's it. If I wanted this Sims like bullsh*t I'd play The Sims.

Some more..

-No need for Hollywood star power to make the characters memorable. Since GTA IV has the best characters in the series its writing stands on its own.

-No pointless underwater diving ocean adventures. Swimming is all that's needed.

I felt that removal of the army was rather an improvement, because I can easily do rampage at 6 star without worrying about Tanks running me over

San andreas is still my favorite of all time, although that is mostly due to nostalgia, but I give it to gta 4 as my close second. It had a better and more focused story, a highly improved combat system, both car and on foot, and an incredibly fun physics system that messing around with it never got old.

Time for a thread revival.

-Niko can break into locked cars whereas CJ's too scared he'll break a nail and stands there pulling on the door handle like an idiot.

-No bicycles with sh*tty physics to boot.

-Random characters make the game world feel more alive. San Andreas feels dead and lifeless.

That animation always felt weird compared to the other titles 😛

Grand Theft Auto IV had a easier Girlfriend system. I loathed the Girlfriend mechanic in San Andreas, but who am I kidding I didn't liked San Andreas.

Plus, Grand Theft Auto IV had Vice City FM for it's DLC's.

Yes. Other than Las Venturas I didn’t care for the other cities. To be fair for the time the map was good, but after experiencing Liberty City/Alderney I never looked back.

Which Island is Las Venturas? The last Island?

A consistent story and protagonist, the one MAJOR thing it did better.

CJ was really inconsistent with his character, the one minute, he's a tough gangbanger, and the other, he's a total wimp.

And how the hell can you go from spraying walls, to stealing jetpacks in a military controlled area?

I've always felt this was because San Andreas was supposed to have multiple protagonists, but they tried making CJ the "Jack of all trades" which is why some situations feel ridiculous and out of character for him *cough* Black Project *cough*.

Some would say this is character development and he "grows", but I disagree. I really don't think R* had much of of idea what they wanted to do with CJ which is why he ends up feeling all over the shop.

Anyway.

-Taxi system > trip skip. San Andreas really needed rideable taxis more because of its map so it beats me why it took so long for R* to implement. Thank God for GTA IV then.

-Niko's not a lonely loser and has friends he can hang out with. People say there's nothing to do in GTA IV's free roam, but even the addition of friends doesn't make it feel so lonely. I wish we could've hung out with The Truth, Cesar etc.

I would have been fine with just the girlfriends if they weren't so damn robotic and demanding...

The weapon sounds, they sound very loud and crisp and make you feel like it's a big deal that you are shooting and being shot at. In San Andreas they sounded like someone was making spitting sounds with their mouth.

Sorry to quote a 3 month old post, but I'm really REALLY glad that this mechanic stuck with the HD era games. My biggest gripes about the 3D era games...

Actually, excluding the top-down titles, GTA III was the first serious, dark and gritty. Not when it comes to drama, but the overall tone and humor in the story, even heavier than GTA IV. Now that's what I'd consider "depressing", and not the usual "grey and stuff" complain made by a lot of people when it comes to GTA IV.

Kinda more off-topic, but that was the roots of the 3D era. Ironically, though, it's GTA San Andreas that's usually considered to be the roots for some reason. Still my favorite title in the 3D era after all, but that doesn't make it the roots.

San Andreas has a lot of bugs and bad physics;the storyline and some missions are ilogical and too exagerated, while the customisation in SA wasn't that great implemented, also LS+SF+LV,are great cities but don't feel alive or very different

IV,Liberty City is very alive with lots of peds, the few customisation options are good, the storyline and missions are realistic and has the best physics in the whole GTA saga, also the wanted system is improved from SA,cover system added, more interiors, phones, cibercafes, subway, bowlling and minigames are amazing additions from SA.

GTA IV improved with almost everything, the smaller map is good, maybe sometimes I miss countryside but is more detailed, lack of barber shops and tatoo shops;well I don't care and don't feel would be useful for Niko,no planes but where to go with planes in Liberty City,no car customisation;I missed that somehow but in IV it dosen't feel necessary

Protagonist - Niko is a much better protagonist than CJ who is just a boring and dull protagonist.

Storyline - Best in the series, SA story was a mess and had no logic.

Map - Quality over Quantity.

Missions - GTA IV has the best and most realistic missions.

Graphics - No explanation needed.

Overall, GTA IV did almost everything better than GTA SA.
