Since upgrading from Windows 7 to Windows 10 I've been getting blue screen of failure with the following message:

KMODE_EXCEPTION_NOT_HANDLED

What failed: mv91xx.sys

Is there a good / tested way to fix it? Thanks a lot in advance for any help!

Are you using a cleaning program like CC Cleaner? If so, programs like those create some dump files which can be found under C:\Windows\minidump. Or try this and see if it can help.

Doesn't explain how to fix it.

The driver above should work out of the box with Windows 10. The problem may be not be the driver itself but instead [Fast Boot] not loading it properly or at all. You could try turning [Fast Boot] off and see if that will fix your problem, and or you can try re-installing said trying under Windows 8.1 compatibility mode.

-------------------------

1. Navigate to Control Panel, System and Security and Power Options.

2. Select ‘Choose what power buttons do’.

3. Click ‘Change settings that are currently unavailable’.

4. Uncheck the box next to ‘Turn on fast start-up’ and Save changes.

Fast startup is a sort of hybrid shutdown and hibernate mode that isn’t without its problems. One of them is issues with loading drivers.

If that doesn’t work, try updating the driver mentioned in the error text. The error will read similarly to ‘Error: KMODE_EXCEPTION_NOT_HANDLED (YOUR-DRIVER.sys)’ which seems most likely related to SATA.

Perform a search on the filename you’re seeing in your error text to find out what driver it relates to.

1. Navigate to Control Panel, Hardware and Sound, Device Manager.

2. Find the hardware in question, right click and select ‘Update Driver Software’.

3. Reboot your computer if directed to.

Hopefully, that will fix the error!

Many people blame CCleaner causing this issue and recommend to avoid any registry cleaners all together. Any thoughts on that?

mv91xx.sys is the driver for your motherboard's SATA controller. It certainly couldn't hurt to update the driver if you haven't already. You can check this by going to: Device Manager > Storage Controllers > Marvell 91xx (or something similar) > Properties. In Properties, under the Driver tab it will show the "Driver Date". Update the driver if it is from before the Windows 10 upgrade.

I don't think CCleaner would be causing the problem. However, when it comes to the registry: "If if ain't broke, don't fix it." Keep CCleaner if you like it for removing temp and "junk" files but I wouldn't use it for anything registry related.
