Rockstar Opens Up to GameInformer about GTA Online's Success

Recommended Posts

three games into one? no, not at all more like 1 game divided in 3 plus a cashgrab online mode.

Tennis, yoga and the main game dude. Can't count?

Seriously though, it's kinda sad they consider V a completely fleshed out story. I loved it, don't get me wrong but it sure as hell had it's shortcomings. After the intro missions up until the first heist, Franklin is pretty much dead meat.

Half of what I read was literally pure bullsh*t. They didn'didn't apologize for all the legit accounts that had hard earned money removed. They mostly spoke about Sharkcards... not even a thanks to the players.

Leslie Benzie needs a come back to give this company a kick up the ass.

I appreciate their game and I will continue play like I do :D But after reading that, they really need to pull their finger out.

The Benz failed miserable at his job, refer to Sarwar mentioning that GTA Online was going downhill up until 2014.

With GTA Online, if there’s content people don’t like or want, they can simply ignore it and do something else, while still being in the same core world as everyone else.

LOL.

With GTA Online, if theres content people dont like or want, they can simply ignore it and do something else, while still being in the same core world as everyone else. However, we decided to release updates with content so pricey, an average player will have to grind for weeks or buy a shark card if there's something they do want. To assure that we made the game modes that are actually competitive or fun to play pay like sh*t.

LOL.

Other than memes, i think i will culminate my GTA Online career with installing a mod menu and finally have some fun, rather than work my ass off on a second job called I/E.

IGN also had an interview with him. Same kind of responses though, definitely an interview planned by R*.

http://www.ign.com/articles/2017/10/23/gta-online-from-near-failure-to-grand-success

Meh, more PR safe bullsh*t, neither GameInformer nor IGN asked him about the many, many complains about the game, like the shoddy P2P servers, the ingame inflation of prices, the devaluation of Shark Cards, the utter lack of game balance, the power creep, the toxic playerbase and so on...

They did ask him, but he dodged it saying there's always complaints about everything they do. Not sure who complained about GTA being 3D, Tommy having a voice, or about CJ being Afro-American in SA like he exemplifies in the GI interview.

I wish they would be honest for once and admit that SP DLC is not worth the effort because it isn't profitable enough for them and they would rather put out half assed overpriced content for online.

Yes, the worst thing is they didn't even mention why they stopped at least adding the new vehicles and weapons to SP like they used to. The only answer here is greed. There's no other excuse for it.

It's just so shamefull how they've completely abandoned what made them great in the first place instead of sticking by it.It's a complete betrayal, there's no other way of describing it.

As someone who's more single player oriented, I too hate this drastic change in direction that Rockstar is going.

But on the other end of the spectrum, for the people crying out "don't fix what isn't broken", well...Call of Duty is doing just that. They are sticking to the same old formula and it gets criticized for being the same game every year. Game developers these days find themselves in a dilemma. There's a very fine line between "It's the same so it sucks" and "It's different so it sucks". Finding that sweet spot is tricky.

There's a highlight in the IGN interview that didn't feature in the original GI interview.

For all the single player fans who hate multiplayer games – please be aware of this – we are working flat out on Red Dead Redemption 2! Having successful multiplayer games lets us take the necessary time with single-player games, to make them all they can be – especially complex when working on new systems as we are right now. Although sometimes there are resource conflicts, most of the time, both game modes support each other.

This turd would have been better off keeping his mouth shut.

R looks like even bigger scumbags now then ever before.

Coming from you, the hell is freezing over.

I love GTA O, but f*ck Rockstar for doing nothing about the SP DLC at f*cking all.

Ughhhh, again with the petty "waaa f*ck rockstar, greedy f*cks!" nonsense. I'll explain to you why Singleplayer DLC is technically not possible with the current DLC system.

Grand Theft Auto V uses a file in the update.rpf named "dlclist.xml". This XML document is used to mount DLC archives. All DLC is mounted using this file. Grand Theft Auto Online enforces file consistency (albeit very poorly, it just checks to see if the RPF is signed, nothing more) to make sure all players have the EXACT same archives. If archives do not match, you can only play with people who have the same exact files as you. This could be easily tested before Rockstar blocked using dinput8 (ASI loader) and OpenIV.asi in GTA Online - you would only be able to play with people who had the exact same mods as you. (However, you can still get online by signing your RPFs, but I suggest you don't do it, modding in GTAO is a no-go and will lead to a ban).

So, if SP DLC happened, players would be segregated by who owns the DLC or who doesn't. Now, instead of cutting up the playerbase, they could make the DLC a forced download and have it be unlocked after you fork up some cash, but nobody would want to download a large DLC package of content they can't access without paying. Another idea is that the DLC could be a free update, but there is no business sense in that. The ONLY WAY to have SP DLC is to chop up the playerbase - but this would kill the MP. DLC packages like map packs do the same thing to other games that have multiplayer, this is exactly what killed Max Payne 3's multiplayer..

So to all of you saying "f*ck rockstar" over something like this, grow up. The only time we should say f*ck rockstar is when they hurt us directly (OpenIV's short-lived shutdown is an example). Not getting some DLC isn't gonna destroy the damn game.

....You mean like how Grand Theft Auto V CURRENTLY does GTAO DLC? Those of us who don't play GTAO STILL have to download the now near 20GB of data that is LOCKED OUT of Single Player (without the use of mods). Keep in mind TLAD was 1.9GB and TBOGT was 2.0GB, Story DLC wouldn't even be a huge dent to FORCE into peoples files compared to all the Online stuff, and let's be honest here, the only reason sizes are that big right now is because Rockstar's patching system sucks, they just ADD, not replace, which is why we have like SEVEN copies of vehicles and up to THREE copies of map areas.

There used to be a time when video game companies at least appeared to view things as games first, money second. It's sad that the industry's done such a blatant 180.

All this interview ended up being was PR speak for "F*ck you, give us money."

I never said that the system is good at all. The entire patchday archive nonsense is f*cking crazy. The best route would have been the game (or games, depending on if you say GTAO is it's own game), split up so content is released specifically for whatever game and neither interferes with eachother's content pipeline.

And yes, it is incredibly ignorant how the content is purposefully locked out of Singleplayer. If Rockstar plans to do this sort of thing again with multiplayer, it'd be best to keep the singleplayer and multiplayer component separate. I personally feel that the two titles should be in a completely different development environment.

What if they shelved the DLC because:

  1. They knew how much people wanted the Casino / Las Venturas and decided to make that into GTA VI
  2. GTA V was rumored to be focused on "the pursuit of the almighty dollar" maybe money is a core gameplay focus in VI?
  3. It gives them more characters to bring back in GTA VI instead of just Packie, Johnny, and the side characters no one noticed or cared about (wtf Marnie looked completely different!!!)

I'm as cynical as everyone else but why else wouldn't you add a casino? I mean this is a relatively minor thing.

I'm still going to say VI is Liberty City again but they could hedge their new city bets by some sort of Venturas and Vice City supercity.

A casino, especially in a game like GTA Online that already relies so heavily on shark cards isn't a "minor" thing. Even if they found some way to integrate it into the game, it would require alot of effort and precision to get it right.

I for one would be f*cking stoked if they made the next GTA revolve around Las Vegas and the casino business down there as well as other elements that make up modern day Las Vegas in the same way they set out to capture the essence of modern day Southern California and chose a theme of Heists for GTAV to revolve around.

As much as I'd love a modern day replication of Miami for the next GTA, I'd love one for Las Vegas/Nevada so much more.

Quite a lot of "fans" or lets say players actually did have complaints at the time.

You may go back and take a look at old articles from the time.

And GTA Vs SP DLC was shelved, because they simply didn't have the resources to support, GTA Online, Red Dead Redemption 2 and other projects among SP DLC.

It's just so shamefull how they've completely abandoned what made them great in the first place instead of sticking by it.It's a complete betrayal, there's no other way of describing it.

Did you even read the Interview?

Imran specificly stated that they STILL BELIEVE in Singleplayer and that Singleplayer is more important to them than anything else, and that their continued focus will remain on Singleplayer.

And that Singleplayer and Online can co-exist, and that Multiplayer service systems allow them to spend more time developing their SINGLEPLAYER GAMES:

Jesus, you guys only hear what you want to hear it seems.

Yeah but they were planning to do the casino as unearthed by the beta hunters.

That and the giant sign. :p
