Hurricane Ophelia

Evening folks. Didn't see a topic for this; and I figured since a lot of you are from the lovely countries of Ireland, Scotland, and the UK, I'd ask for your thoughts.

https://www.google.com/amp/s/www.bbc.com/news/amp/uk-41627442

Furthest east a storm has ever formed in the Atlantic beating out Hurricane Frances; which happened in 1980 and never made landfall.

As this is an unusual occurrence for you lot, how are you feeling? Storing up Jameson in the bunker? Squirreling away crumpets in the basement? Other unfunny stereotypical things us Yankees say?

Share your thoughts.

It's really unusual but if we get like a centimetre of snow we shut the country down but 80mph winds it's just like a normal day for us.

Let's hope this time around no life will be lost to the storm.

Meanwhile, other parts of Europe enjoy almost summer-like temperatures. They predict 26Celsius in the Netherlands and yesterday has been quite warm as well. The storm won't hit western europe, apparently.

Scotland isn't a seperate country from the UK, m8. But yeah, it's pissing down here. Not very windy though. Quite disappointed to be honest. Christ, literally as I'm typing this the rain has went full throttle!

After the warnings from the other two hurricanes, I'll take this one with a pinch of seasalt 'til I see cows and fish swirling past my window.

The sun is red and the sky is blanketed with yellow...even down in the south east. Ain't that something.

It's only 17:16 and it's pretty bloody dark in comparison to Brussels which is being streamed live on my TV via the BBC knobs, and Brussels is an hour ahead. The sky has definitely been weird this afternoon.

Stay safe fellas! Thanks for the updates, that sky must be weirder than hell. I gotta be honest; I don't know much about weather over there other than the BS you get from TV: it's either raining in Britain or beautiful in Ireland. What are you all used to? How's the summer been?

Yes, this is a weather thread. You younguns who don't watch the Weather Channel religiously might wanna steer clear.

Funny story, invited a girl from work over years ago; thought I had the green light. We chatted, smoked, and I made a move. She very quickly and vehemently denied me. I then assumed she'd probably leave due to the awkwardness, but we hung out for another painful hour. I brought up the weather as the conversation was deader than Reagan. She replied with: "Please, for the love of God, talk about anything other than the weather."

Not my best moment.

My mistake on mentioning Scotland as its own country. I'm under the impression some would much prefer it that way; but that's a topic for another time :)

Storing up Jameson in the bunker?

Pretty f*cking offensive to imply anyone would drink, let alone store that sh*te if I'm being honest.

Some do want it that way; thankfully they're an increasing minority.

As for the weather: I can't speak for England and Wales, but the weather in central Scotland is windy 80% of the time, but then I'm on the coast. It's pretty much the norm for me to walk to the shop for basic necessities whilst wearing a beanie hat in the middle of July. I don't mind the cold temperatures, I just f*cking hate wind.

The wind is still pretty mental right now. It's 08:13 as I type this, which is normally the time I walk to the shop and get my milk and papers and all that sh*t, but I'm pretty reluctant to step outside. This would be a great moment for Mary Poppins to help out, but she herself would be blown into the North Sea with this gust.

The sun seems a bit red-ish and gloomy today. I've read on news websites the atmosphere in the UK was very weird yesterday, also saw some pics. It's because of those sand particles the storm brought from Africa.

If any of you took any pics of this phenomenon or found any online, feel free to post them. Could look at them all day.

I was running around tryna find the sun after it disappeared. Finally found it. I posted this in the photography section but yeah, seems more relevant here because I'm not a f*cking photographer.

Bad quality, because I took this on my phone. I took a handful on my actual camera but I've not got round to them yet. About 30 minutes after taking this the sky cleared and stayed bright blue until nighttime.

Well, on my small phone screen your picture looks like a painting. The pics I saw on the news all looked like they were edited with a sepia effect. If anything good happened because of the storm, it's all those pictures. I'd link that creepy London pic but I'm on the phone and somehow I can't link the website, takes me to a weird AMP link.

If you're interested, Telegraph and Daily Mail posted those. Simply type "red sun UK" into google and you should see the results.

OOoo yeah I just googled it! I wish I had equipment to take photos like that.

It's just sh*tty that the amazing sky that we all saw had to come at the cost of so much destruction, I'm glad I saw it though.

One of the confirmed deaths in Ireland (I forget if the Republic or Northern) was a man trying to cut a downed tree with a chainsaw...during 80+ mile per hour gusts of wind...Darwinism right there at its finest...

That's a very sh*tty thing to say. That man who died was trying to help by clearing the road so others could pass. His death was a tragedy. Not "darwinism". Edited by Neon_Dreaming

But yeah that was sad. I mean I get he was trying to do something for the community but there was severe warnings. People in work were advised to stay in work until the worst passed.

I managed take some photos by the sea, nothing really amazing but interesting nonetheless. I was looking at big old trees moving like mad. It was the first time I was in a storm or near-storm and really questioned my safety and I've been in near gale-force conditions on a small yacht before.and have experienced crashing on rocks out at sea. I just kept thinking that a tile would come off the roof of the house and hit me in the head or a branch would fly through a windscreen.

There was also a bit of controversy too when it surfaced that people were going swimming in the bad weather. Especially since some rescue service people had died not so long ago. People thought it was disrespectful.

This is on the west coast of Ireland.
