SanAndreasManiac
after I read 1984 for the first time, I was like "Wow man, that was deep!", it made me reflect about how our society is, how it could be, and a bit of relief came to me, bcoz I live in this capitalist world seriously, this actual world is great if compared to Oceania in 1984
Blind Joe Death
Just finished reading Breath by Tim Winton. This beautiful book further cements Tim Winton not just as one of my favourite Australian authors, but one of my worldwide, all-time favourite writers. Recommended to all, especially fans of Cormac McCarthy. Plenty of similarities between the two. edit: So, seeing as I have not picked anything up lately. I might read The Road again, just so I can prepare for the film! I think I'll do the same. The film is released early next year I believe. Many critics have already seen the film and reviews have been overwhelmingly positive. I honestly couldn't be more psyched for a film, I even ordered the poster. JayM
after I read 1984 for the first time, I was like "Wow man, that was deep!", it made me reflect about how our society is, how it could be, and a bit of relief came to me, bcoz I live in this capitalist world seriously, this actual world is great if compared to Oceania in 1984 I had to study it for my A Level's last year and I found it very, very boring and depressing. I think if I read it again myself I'd enjoy it more and absorb it's message more thoroughly but there's something about an English teachers monotone voice droning on for 40 minutes that makes me switch off. General Goose
In 1984, I found that book so deep, so analytical and so well-thought out. Newspeak in particular impressed me. It made me think this was one dictatorship that could not fall.

major underscore
I recently finished The Idiot by Dostoyevsky. According to Wikipedia it's considered "one of the most brilliant literary achievements of the Russian 'Golden Age' of Literature", but to be honest I wasn't very impressed. It's a good book to have read though, I think. @Hell No..: I'm looking forward to that movie too. Have read the book. The movie won't premiere here in Sweden until January 22, 2010 though... my country is such a backwater.
Hell No..
Has anyone read Shutter Island? I might pick it up to get more detail from the film, which was really amazing. I'm on Twitch! Oddsock
Reading a collection of stories by H.P. Lovecraft right now! Currently I'm on "The Dunwich Horror." I also want to read Dante Alighieri's "Divine Comedy", something that playing Dante's Inferno pushed me to, but I'm a bit too busy for that
unopescio
I've started reading Ender's Game again. By far my favorite Sci-Fi book. I didnt really like it that much, really badly paced, the whole ending was rushed while the rest was painfully slow.
Otter
Reading Under the Dome right now, and loving. Quite a change of pace from The Road, but the same overall disdain for humanity. Picked up a copy of The Lost City of Z last night, so that's next on the list....
johnny_zoo
Im King of the Castle by Susan Hill was an excellent read. It was about two boys suddenly becoming stepbrothers and the tension between the mother and father. Good stuff.
FullMetal
Been a long time I read a decent novel. Though the latest novels I read were all by the hand of Andy Mcnab. I really think it's stupid I bought (and started reading) the translated versions of his books because it ruins the whole feeling pretty damn much. Though the story and such is f*cking awesome. 'Agressor, Dark Winter and Liberation Day' are the ones I've read (Dutch Translations unfortunatly). All three great books though Dark Winter has a really f*cked up ending. Totally unexpected Suzy ('collegue') and Kelly (14 year old girl Nick Stone takes care of after 'the incident') get killed. Long time since I felt like crap after finishing a book. Started reading 'The Death of Bunny Munro' by Nick Cave. I'm now through the first 140-ish pages and it's getting more interesting. At first it was all vagina, tits, vagina, f*ck, vagina (eventhough brilliantly written) but after a while the story begins to unveil itself. Apart from a couple of hilarious moments the whole atmosphere is rather dark & loomy. Also available as audiobook later sometime (with music composed by Warren Ellis and Nick Cave)... must be pretty cool aswel! Tycek
Has anyone read Shutter Island? I might pick it up to get more detail from the film, which was really amazing. I've read it some time ago. This is really great book, but I'm afraid if you have seen the movie the whole mystery will go away. Dennis Lehane wrote many good books which three of them were converted to movies. greebo-man
Orwell's homage to catalonia. He's actually such a man. Did you know he was shot clean through the throat and survived? good picture of the spanish civil war, which seems to be the most ill-concieved, badly prepared for, lamest war ever. but the rebels won! f*ck it. Kora
I've started reading Ender's Game again. By far my favorite Sci-Fi book. I'm 100 or so pages through my first Sci-Fi book, Marrow by Robert Reed. Saw it in a bookshop, and thought to give it a go. It's not too bad, I'm enjoying it. Kind of refreshing after ploughing through the likes of Jack Higgins (any of his books are a must-read) and Robert Ludlum. Can you recommend me any others? fox09
Just finished Atlas Shrugged. Christ, that book was hard to get through. Well-worth it though. Really opens you up to a whole new vision of life. Somewhat less meaningful, but I also just read through 3 of the Dexter books. I'm still debating whether or not they're better than the series. major underscore
Right now I'm reading A portrait of the artist as a young man by James Joyce and Madame Bovary by Gustave Flaubert. I'm enjoying both books, but they are both slow reads. Next I'm looking forward to reading David Copperfield and Hard Times by Charles Dickens. nerner
Hard Times is boring as hell in my opinion. Currently reading the second in the CHILD44 series by Tom Rob Smith and finding it as absorbing as the first, if not more so.
Parky.
Finished Fear and Loathing on the Campaign Trail yesterday. Super mind f*ck, I can see how Hunter S Thompson ended up like he did that year damn. Really mad to delve into American politics, especially for the McGovern/Nixon election, some of the sh*t that happened is beyond belief, at least for an englishman anyway

I f*cking loved F&L in Las Vegas and I love his style (Gonzo). Almost finished 'The Death of Bunny Munro'. It's sick how this book gives you mixed feelings all at the same time. You don't know wether to find it hilarious or sad... you don't know wether to smile because of the humor or to cry. A must read to be honest. Don't expect another 'Vegas' from the campaign trail book. It has a much more serious tone, but is still a BRILLIANT read. 'Bunny Munro' is a waste of time. Get his other book if you want something that makes you think.
