The films produced and published of [A24 ]

It's not unusual with music that you might find a label that publishes many artists that you may like. Like the Warp music label, I find I can go on to their list of artists, pick one out and they're usually decent. Well, lately, some of the better films I've seen in the last 3 or 4 years have been from A24. I just joined the dots now and checked out their site. It seems I watched a whole bunch of films of theirs.

They're an independent company that finance, distribute and produce for film and TV. It's only a young company.

This is great for me because when I see the A24 logo, I have high expectations and they usually deliver. Some films from A24 are:

A Most Violent Year

Spring Breakers

Slow West

Ex Machina

Under The Skin

Green Room

Swiss Army Man

Moonlight

Supersonic (Oasis documentary)

The Disaster Artist

Room

The Witch

The Lobster

Mid-90's

Uncut Gems

American Honey

The Lighthouse

Hereditary

First Reformed

I've seen  most of those listed films. Also some of the films, they would act, purely as a distributor. However, they seem to chose their films wisely in what they'll decide to distribute. These are just the films I've seen and they're all over at least 70% on RT. And at least 4 of those films on the list, I was thinking about for a week after.

I don't know, just thought I'd share that with you. I notice some members here that have listed those films as films they really loved. You might get a surprise like I did that they all share A24 as the company that ties them all together. I think A24 logo on films for me now is like a quality assured sign now something :p

That's pretty cool, the people there have great foresight in what they fund, those movies listed are all quality. I have A Most Violent Year on dvd but had forgotten about it so thanks for reminding me of it, that's tonights viewing sorted.

Yeah, it's really giving me hope for filmmaking. With the dominant market being super-hero films and lots of people going their own way with indie productions, I'm happy there's a decent company funding and distributing great indie-flicks, tying them all together.

I figured I would bump this topic and use it to post the A24 releases.

This documentary looks interesting.

And The Green Knight...

Cool to see they're behind American Honey, it's one of my favourite films, I've seen 5 of the movies listed in the op, and they were all excellent.

Yes, to me they are the last life-line in a Hollywood that's really just devolved into remakes and pre-established, mega-blockbuster Superhero films. Films that will make money regardless.  They are giving a platform to filmmakers to continue with new and original ideas. Hollywood is taking less chances and wants to invest in big and safe IPS.

And I'm happy to find out it it was part-created by Beastie Boys' Adam Yauch's (RIP) partner (David Fenkel, A24) in his studio Oscilloscope. They're all about independent film and music. So, it they have good people there, behind the scenes.

And funny, I just found this video right now and basically sums up what I was just saying.

A24 is one of the most interesting distributors in the game at the moment. They've got a knack for picking up often really strange projects that really resonate with a certain type (probably self-admittedly  quite pretentious!) film nerd.

They have this talent of taking projects that are honestly quite out there compared the blockbusters, but still retain some sort of accessibility for general audiences. They're not making Marvel movies, but their not making Upstream Color either.

They've produced some of my favourite films of the last decade, namely: Enemy, Locke (which does SO MUCH with SO LITTLE), Ex Machina, The Lobster, and what might be one of my all time favourite films in Under The Skin. UTS is just f*cking brilliant and I love how deeply unsettling the whole thing is.

A real shout-out has to go to Midsommar as well. It's criminal that it's not on the list in the OP!

(Edit: Woops the OP is from 2017, my bad!)

Looking over their wiki page reminds me of all their stuff I've been meaning to watch for years too. Stuff like. It Comes At Night, Lady Bird (which I've hear Saoirse Ronan absolutely kills in), Green Room and The Disaster Artist.

Just watched Lady Bird on the back of seeing this thread yesterday. sh*t was dope.

I'd definitely say it was one of the more normal A24 associated films, but that does not exclude it from being fantastic. Maybe it's the film or maybe it cos I'm just getting old now but it's definitely a coming-of-age film that's for people who came of ago some time ago. By that i mean, it seems more about reflecting on yourself at that sort of age rather than viewing the characters as contemporaries.

In a lot of films in this genre you typically have the adult cast "just not understanding" the kids, which is fine because you're seeing it from the teenager's point of view, and that's how it feels when you're that age. But Lady Bird doesn't really do that. At least to me, it seems to be pretty clear about how the main character is kind of an arsehole and she should be. I maintain the stance that everyone is an arsehole when they're a teenager, it's just part of growing up.

I remember hearing a review around the time it came out about how it was like a scrapbook of most peoples' youths and like looking back at memories of that time. Those specific things might not have happened to me, bu man does it make you remember those feelings that only a kid who's becoming an adult can really experience.

Top marks. Put Saoirse Ronan in all the things because she's astounding.

Next up, probably A Ghost Story, because as per that video above, I think I might want to watch Rooney Mara eat a pie on the floor for 8 minutes?

EDIT:

Watched A Ghost Story, also dope.

Zks4C2m.jpg

as you might be able to guess from the poster, it's absolutely not a horror film. It'll put the heebie jeebies into you soul rather than your heart rate though.

It's less a ghost story and more a ghost's story. A heartfelt and considered look at trying to imagine a time when we ourselves do not exist any more. To go into any real detail about what goes on I'd thikn would be a spoiler, but the basic premise is that an unnamed couple played by Casey Affleck and Rooney Mara are living together in this little old house, and one day Casey

Spoiler

dies in a car wreck just outside

(Note that I wouldn't consider this a spoiler). The rest of the film centres around how he lives in the house after that.

It's beautiful and heartfelt and asks big questions in a very relatable way.

This review, says it all much better than I can:

Two quick sidenotes though:

The aspect ratio is all weird, I think it looks to be 1.33:1. It's very obviously a stylistic choice but I found it quite distracting to start with. Maybe it's just 'cos I work in filmmaking that I'm a bit sensitive to it but it seemed a bit unnecessary.

Holy sh*t the pie scene was actually great, and props to Mara for eating near enough the whole damn thing. I really hope it only took one take.

This sums up Ladybird so well. Good to see you back Movies and TV section has never been the same without your reviews.

News.. A24 is producing a show with Tim Heidecker, Fred Armisen and John C. Reilly.

Moonbase8.

Tim Heidecker and John C. Reilly worked on Tims show and Reily plays Dr. Steve Brule..

However, I'm not a huge fan of Fred Armisen. But he doesn't bother me. I just don't think Portlandia was that funny.

A24 is practically the only studio left in America willing to invest good money in art films. I think Joel Coen's Macbeth starring Denzel will also get produced by them.

You're absolutely right. They are the last beacon of hope for Hollywood for me. Other than that, Netflix do surprisingly well for TV but not so much films.

This Sofia Coppola film with Bill Murray looks excellent.. Of course we all remember it's not their first time working together as Murray starred in Coppola's Lost In Translation. Coppola is a great filmmaker and from a famous family of cinema legends; her father being Francis Ford Coppola (The Godfather), Nicholas Cage (Coppola) is her cousin as well as Jason Schwartzman. She was also married to Spike Jonez (Jackass, Her, Being John Malcovich as well as directing famous videos for Beastie Boys and Fatboy Slim, Bjork and many more). So she's grown up around filmmaking royalty and has been engrossed in it from birth. It's no wonder she's so good.

For me, A24 is that kind of film company that overall has good productions, but the fanbase is terrible. These people think A24 literally reinvented cinema, what the f*ck.

Seen a few productions published/produced by them, with my favorites being "First Reformed" and "Good Time". I consider "Free Fire" and "Euphoria" the worst productions I've seen from them.
