- lack of rural areas. The whole thing was just a grey city, even the grass was grey. The only park in Alderney was scrapped pre-release.

Fair enough about the lack of rural areas, but the grass is definitely not grey.

Sorry, I have to disagree. On average, SA's vegetation is greener, if you take in account all weather conditions and times etc.

- too many details. It took me 10 years to realise that this is the single thing about the new games that makes me hate them. Makes the game look less arcade.

I can't say in all the years I've been on the forum having too many details is seen is a bad thing. I'd rather have as much detail as possible as opposed to having less. I'm sure the majority of people would agree too.

I hear you - I too was one of these people who wanted more details, and when IV came out I was thoroughly disappointed. It was only until V was release that I realised that I love the game, but the over-the-top detalisation ruins it for me. I know that some people still love that kind of stuff, but for me SA's level of details was ideal - maybe bit more grass.

In IV/V I often find myself annoyed by the amount of small obstructions in a way not only the vehicle, but the protagonist. It is very annoying. I play the game to relax and take my mind off the real world, and I come to something just as frustrating. I also thought that the buildings in SA could do with some more details, but turned out I prefer the low-poly models rather than excessively detailed maps of IV and V. Makes for a more pleasurable and stressless experience, at least for me.

Don't see much of a difference. I play GTA IV regularly and I know the grass isn't "grey".

No problem. Thanks for elaborating. :^:

C'mon man, it's common knowledge that IV uses a brown- grey filter to create its gritty atmosphere. Compared to the other games it looks very dull. You can compare pictures yourself.

I'm not talking about the actual filter as I obviously know that, but saying the grass is grey is a bit of an exaggeration don't you think?

The brown/grey filter to heighten the atmosphere has nothing to do with physical environment properties. Edited by Algonquin Assassin

The brown/grey filter to heighten the atmosphere has nothing to do with physical environment properties.

Actually it does a little

the background haze causing a sort of optical illusion where the grass may seem to be washed out and look grayish, even if maybe they aren't. The only way to experiment with this, assuming I am correct, would be to Photoshop out the grass themselves, without the fecal haze, and paste their images into a more neutral or colorful background. In other words, it is possible that the grass are really beautiful and greener in IV, but to the player's eye they could appear as if they are not because the fecal haze might be playing tricks on the brain.

The problem is obvious. If this is the case, then, in essence, it makes little difference how well the grass are drawn or colored. If IV's fecal haze is causing the eye to see them as washed out, lifeless, or lacking in color, then that is how the game and its MPC's are inevitably perceived. So unless there is a "Remove Brown Fecal Haze" Mod for IV, I am not sure there is any practical way to test out this theory, since the human eye, while playing the game, sees the totality of the imagery being rendered on the screen, and not just the environment in isolation.

I guess it's just easier to copy and paste one your buddy's posts and change a few words to sound smart instead of fabricating an original argument? ;)

Edit: Anybody knows why my posts don't show up? I have to edit them in even after I post.

The map is good for what it is, but I would have liked more woods and county side. Though the map as it is succeds at what it wants to do.

Awesome map, only thing it lacks is countryside.

Id rate it 10/10. Sure, it was too small. But GTA IV showed the world the way it really is. Awful and dark. Unlike V.

The map actually feels great, but most notable flaw for me is a lack of country areas.

9/10. The map really suits my needs. It's not too big, it's not too small -- it feels just right, and it's neatly detailed at every nook and corner.

9/10. Only thing I gotta complain about is that I always wanted a bigger Alderney and all the interiors to be unlocked.

8.5/10 simply because even though it was a very good map, it did have a few stand-out flaws :

* Not enough middle-class suburbs

* No countryside or non-urban areas (not wilderness, did not need it)

* Broker and Dukes should have been bigger

* No main stadium

* No rail link to Alderney

If it had at least some of the above, I'd have given it a 10/10. Other than that, it was a very good map, much better than it's successor's at least. It largely succeeded in providing a very realistic re-creation of New York City for the whole gameplay experience, it did a great job of doing what it set out to do, and that was enough for me.

I rate it 9.5/10 simply because I love large cities with tall buildings, and Liberty City is perfect for that. Walking around the city, seeing pedestrians on their phones or reading books or walking with their shopping bags is immersive enough for me, although it annoys me when they just drop them whenever I run past them or honk at them. Back when I first played the game it was so cool to see the lights of Algonquin from Hove Beach during the night, it made me want to explore it and walk around those tall buildings, eventually I got there and it was a fantastic experience, it was not the same for Alderney though but I still like it. Something I hope Rockstar will do again is closed islands or city areas that you unlock by progressing through the story. With GTA V there was no such thing, and I didn't get that feeling of accomplishment, perhaps when I unlocked Trevor but it was not the same. If they make Vice City again I hope they will do that again, crossing those bridges for the first time and finally exploring another part of the map is always great experience.

Even today I like looking at the buildings in the distance, mostly at night, the city feels so alive and I love the ambiance, the busy streets, the subway train which I do not take that often but is still a fun experience, for some reason I love the little train sequence during "Clean Getaway" looking at those project towers and moving away from Hove Beach is cool, as simple as it is, I just wish that train ride was longer, especially since the cutscene stops before the train even arrives to the correct station.

As said above a Stadium would have been great, something like GTA III's stadium would be fantastic to look at during the night with light projectors and announcers or hearing people cheering from the outside. A casino like Kenji's could have been fun as well, as a little nod to GTA III. As for the size of the map I think it's pretty much perfect, there's tons of places I'm sure I have never explored before. If I were to change the size of some areas I would make Bohan bigger, Dukes and Broker as well though I think the size is good enough. A longer Middle Park would be great too.

Beautiful map especially considering this was Rockstar's first game in the HD Era. The map is beautiful but I really want to go back to Liberty City sometime as I think there's so much that could be done with today's hardware such as places Upstate (maybe even Carcer City) and more of Alderney. It was the perfect map for finding Flying rats, creepy alleys and even underground subways but I know Rockstar will want to expand on that.

It's alright. Bit dull. People who say "it's more real than Los Santos" are jokers.

I voted for average, too much and too long bridges, this guickly get's boring and annyoing (the same applies for Saints Row 3). NYC may have a lot of bridges but they are out of proportion in the game, this is my main critics, it feels forced and unnatural to segregate the parts of the map this way unless the boroughs were larger. I miss a rural landscape but that's a personal bias, the city partly feels large and authentic (except for the bridges' matter).

I've never loved a map in the GTA series more than this one. Everything about it is amazing, never gets boring to cruise around.

I like the map. My favorite in GTA series. Lot's of interiors ( only San Andreas probably has more). I just like the city. I prefer LC over LS.

Above Average.

The design is good.

But as said before the grey brownish filter and blurry textures ruins it.

It’s a 10/10 plain and simple, it is as much a character as Niko. I can’t even play IV without eventually stopping to take in the atmosphere. I don’t think it has any ‘flaws’ in its design, but I would like to see it expanded a bit if the city makes another appearance.

And about the grass being grey...it isn’t. But, the weather does massively affect the colour scheme, so that is what you’re noticing. The game looks almost as vibrant as GTA V on crystal clear days, but on cloudy days which are the most common, even your car colour is muted. Try going into an area that is not affected by weather such as an interior, and watch as Niko’s clothes suddenly gain a bit of colour and even his skins looks less pale.

If Liberty City makes another appearance it should be a bit bigger to allow for some more landmarks like Madison Square Garden, but I agree it's hard to find flaws in its actual design.

I managed to keep the artbook I got with the special edition and it's quite an interesting read how they went about it.
