When I get an Xbox, the Game Pass will be the first thing I buy. I'm VERY impressed with how much value is included in it. All of these new games being available on the pass at Launch, and just so much variety. It's perfect for anybody just diving in to Xbox.

Gamertags are changing, rumors were true.

Basically how Steam and Battle.net run.

You can have any gamertag and will be assigned a number # if there are more than one

First change is free!

Bad news: Xbox One Backwards Compatibility is coming to an end as of today - sounds like the plan is to focus on making Scarlett consoles more suitable from the get-go, and working on making any future older games work on that hardware instead. Sad to hear, but totally understandable, all things considered.

Good news: the final batch is really rather good - particularly Splinter Cell: Chaos Theory (probably my favourite in the series - particularly the co-op mode). That, and they're making unavailable DLC packs for some Star Wars/Splinter Cell titles (Yavin Station for KotOR, for example) compatible, and available as free title updates, which is pretty cool.

Bit of a shame that Spider-Man 2 is either coming to Scarlett, or ...not at all (and the same for popular requests like Max Payne 3), but it was a darn good run while it lasted - and again, I get why it has to end, considering the priority is hitting the ground running with backwards compatibility on next-gen machines.

Well I did expect more information about the next gen XBX. At least we got a little bit of information. The E3 2020 will be the one that will kick it with NG for sure.

But with all information we have now I will go with the PS5.

I reallly hope the Scarlett will be backwards compatible with most, if not all OG Xbox, Xbox 360 and Xbox One games.

It can't be due to licensing issues.

Nothing to do with licensing - everything to do with Scarlett hardware.

Worth remembering that Xbox One backwards compatibility wasn't a feature at launch, and currently works via an emulator - in a way, it's not full backwards-compatibility, in the sense of just being able to slap in a 360 disc and have the game run straight from it (instead, discs just serve as proof of purchase, and allow you to download the game and run it through the b-c emulator).

Not sure if Anaconda/Lockhart will be able to run old discs directly, but at the very least, it sounds like they're building in a newer, better system (even if just an improved emulator) from the get-go - and that'll require a lot of time/effort getting stuff from the current b-c library to work on it at launch (never mind if the new hardware is so different to XB1 that Scarlett machines will effectively be treating XB1 games as b-c, too). In any case, they're not using the current method any more, so it makes sense that they stop working on making things run on the XB1 emulator, and instead get on with Scarlett b-c, ready for release next year.

That's not true at all. They are all x86 machines so compatibility issues should be relatively easy to fix. An Xbox is essentially a modified Windows machine running DX12. Yes, the hardware is different but it is about as different as upgrading your CPU\GPU in a PC. Your old games still work if the hardware is optimized at, well, the hardware level.

They can't make all old games compatible because of licensing issues. Some of those games have trademarks or other licensed content that costs money to acquire a license for if possible and Microsoft doesn't really want to deal with that anymore.

...ah, sorry - looks like I parsed this one incorrectly! :pp

Instead of reading it as "it can't be, due to licensing issues" (i.e. "there are some things that'll never be b-c, because it's not possible for MS to get the required permissions"), I read it as "it can't be due to licensing issues" (i.e. "the end of XB1 b-c can't be due to running out of licensed games to make available").

My bad - and yeah, agreed on that one. Bit like stuff getting delisted because the developer/publisher is defunct, and so the licenses are in a weird limbo state - there's plenty of older stuff where MS doesn't have control over it anymore, and it's nigh-on impossible to work around that.

As for the hardware issue, I get what you're saying, but that still doesn't change the fact that XB1 can't run 360 discs. I'll cop to probably mangling 'hardware' to also mean the overall architecture of the machine/system, not just the component parts, but it's still something beyond merely downloading a system update and suddenly being able to play older titles from the disc (as opposed to simply using them to authenticate ownership of a title, and being given permission to download the digital version for free).

Again, it could just be that Scarlett uses a better emulator (the XB1 b-c emulator was a bit rough at launch - early examples like Halo: Reach weren't great...) - but it'd be ideal if you could slap even an original Xbox disc into a Scarlett console, and play the game straight from it, no download required.

...plus, to combine both strands of this reply (!), that'd get around licensing issues for stuff people already own, at least - if Scarlett can do 'pure' backwards-compatibility instead of emulation, you might not be able to buy a digital version of a delisted game, but you'd still be able to pop in your disc for, say, Alan Wake, and run it (or any other older title) just fine. That's why I hope 'run anything straight from the disc' is the goal, here.

I'm really happy about having 3 or 4 generations of BC on Xbox when Scarlett comes out.

Saying that you hope that the new Xbox will support the same games is like saying that you hope your brand new PC will support the games you were playing previously. Even on Windows 10 you get excellent compatibility with older games (with some tweaks at least). On Xbox it was definitely a given. It's good for them because that way you'll be able to keep playing the games you started on the previous console until they launch more titles that are enhanced for the new console.

This Xbox sale is killing me. I own a lot of games and this sale is almost like it's targeting me based on games that I was going to buy and never got around to:

Dishonored (Definitive Edition) : €11.99

Cities: Skylines €9.99

Hitman HD Collection: €18

Payday 2 (Crimewave Edition): €7.99

Sega Megadrive Classics (50+ games): €17.99

I've gotten to that weird point where Xbox will have these huge sales and somehow I'm not interested in much. Kinda want to buy Kane and Lynch 2 though. It has that appeal that games like Sonic 06 or Call of Juarez The Cartel have, in that they're bad but fun to play because they're bad.

Helps me in that I'm really picky about the stuff I play - I'm not really all that bothered every time something like a Far Cry game goes on sale, because they're just not my thing.

L.A. Noire is 25% off, which is tempting, but it'll wind up in my backlog for months - and it'll probably be even cheaper come Black Friday, when I'll actually have a chance of being able to play it... Still haven't finished Mafia III yet, because I'm too busy with Forza Horizon (and to a lesser extent RDO), and that's before I fork out for the big Monster Hunter expansion coming in September, which'll probably eat up all my free time until 2020.

(and then it's just a matter of months until Bloodlines 2 and Cyberpunk - part of me is hoping that at least one of those is either delayed or ...rubbish, so I'm not stuck juggling more games than I can manage... :facedesk:)

Absolutely. However, I cancelled the sub as I haven't the time to play as much I wish. So, I was hoping to own one or two games like Cities that I could play for a few hours on the weekend. When my schedule gets better or I'm closer to work, I'll re-sub to Game Pass. Well, actually, Other Worlds is coming direct to Game Pass so that's definitely going to get me to sub.

The sale is pretty big. Lots of excellent titles. Although yesterday I was in CEX and I found the Sega complication for €15 used.

@Commander S: That's my problem. I'm really not picky. I'll usually find some value in a wide variety of games for few hours. I'm certainly trying to be more picky now. I just don't have the time to be unpicky. I kind of miss when I was a kid and more poor. I'd get one game and play the sh*t out of it. Although arguably I'm more of a gamer as an adult than I ever was.

I've decided Other Worlds, Cyberpunk 2077 are going to be my big two going forward. Still haven't finished the story of RDR2 (I know, shock but I'm loving it and taking a big break) I'm only about 55% the way through as I was really stopping to smell the roses in that game.

I definitely must be more strict with myself. Finish off a few games that I own before I buy more.

Can anyone recommend a few decent games for X1X? I'm generally into RPGs and/or open world games etc.

I still haven't picked up Metro Exodus although may do for PC if it weren't for Epic. Have never played Mafia 2 either and I never completed AC:Origins on PS4 so may pick that up.

Any suggestions welcomed, across all genres. Ta.

I mean, if you don't mind playing older games, and like the idea of seeing them with 1X visual/performance improvements, you can't go wrong with something like Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic, or Fable 2 (or Jade Empire, KotOR 2, Fable 3, etc.).

Alternatively, if you want *the* big open-world RPG of this generation, that'd be The Witcher 3 - I could never really get into the setting, personally (same reason why I've never tried the Dragon Age games), but if your RPG tastes include fantasy stuff, CDPR has more-or-less taken the crown from BioWare at this point (and look like they're setting their sights on R*'s throne, too, considering how Cyberpunk 2077 is shaping up...).

I would recommend Deus Ex if you want a bit of Cyberpunk. It's on sale at the moment.

Hitman has really returned to form.

I would also second getting the The Witcher 3. I'd say it will look nice on One X.

I'm a fan of the Metro series too. Haven't played Exodus yet, though.

Is anyone still looking to upgrade to Ultimate game pass? The conversion deal is still going and I have 3 12 month cards for sale, $120. Then you can get the full deal of upgrading.

For any of you who use the 'home' screen on your xbox; get ready to get cranky.

I'm in the alpha preview program.  Had a regular (happens while I'm asleep) update yesterday.  Just now had a mid day update.  Had to manually install.

New interface for the home screen where they changed the navigation from easy to controller bumber button around tabs to a cluster of nav buttons(think late 90s early 2000s web page nav) that you have to thumb to and hit.  What the?

qRcSCxd.jpg

E:

Oh my.  This is so bad and makes no sense.  I actually rated the update a 1...its that bad.

Did they remove the option of one month for gold? Can't buy it on the dash or the online store using edge. Just says Oops not available. I'm on the last few days of game pass ultimate so I don't know if that has anything to do with it.

Also this thread was buried. Just shows how dead Xbox is.

I have a feeling they're trying to push everyone on to Game Pass eventually

It's most likely because you're still on GPU

Yeah, nothing new has been around in the news with Xbox.

Currently 10 hours left on the R* publisher sale - L.A. Noire is currently $19.99/£17.49, which is pretty tempting (although between Monster Hunter World: Iceborne, Forza Horizon 4 weekly unlocks, grinding Outlaw Pass ranks in RDO, I'm already stretched pretty thin, and oh, lawdy, I've still yet to finish my current Mafia III playthrough... :panic:).

Could always wait for Black Friday, I supposed - but last time I did that, the deals weren't as good as the publisher sale, and I don't remember the last time L.A. Noire was this cheap, so... ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
