Even if you get past the fact that most TVs have abysmal response times that will translate to input lag in games there is no way that you are going to get HDR in 4K at higher refresh rates than 60 Hz. From what I can gather, HDR uses at least a 10 bit color depth which automatically results in the use of chroma subsampling (4 2 0) which can introduce visual artifacts, especially on text.

 

Oh sh*t, I'm just noticing that. So regardless of whether or not it can do 120hz with HDR, the port is still HDMI 2.0, which effectively makes 120hz refresh rate pointless, thus contributing to input lag on 60hz, I assume?

I'm talking about input lag caused by high response times. Response time has nothing to do with the refresh rate. It simply tells you the amount of time it takes the panel to change the color of one pixel (or to cycle through all of the supported colors essentially for one pixel). TVs tend to have response times of tens of milliseconds, which will affect your gameplay depending on how high they go. Monitors are typically under 10 ms, regardless of price, because there's less post processing being used since it's only function is to be a PC display.

 

Current TVs (and display technologies in general) use digital signals that are limited by the available bandwidth. The current HDMI 2.0 standard used for TVs limits you to 3840 x 2160 (4K) 60 Hz because it cannot transmit more data than that (which is partly the fault of HDCP, the copyright protection feature of HDMI that prevents you from recording\bootlegging movies or something). A higher resolution or a higher refresh rate means more pixels per second which means more data needs to be transmitted. I think currently the only way to do 4K at 120 Hz (in 8 bit or 10 bit RGB) is to have a DisplayPort 1.2 or 1.3 input. TVs will likely stick to the HDMI standard forever and it will take a while for HDMI to catch up with DisplayPort in terms of bandwidth.

 

To be fair you don't need 120 Hz for a TV that you will use with a console. Games will not go above 60 Hz on PS4 Pro or Xbox Scorpio for that matter.

I had a weird issue. Suddenly my Xbox One couldn't detect a wifi network. Any wifi network. It told me I need to restart the Xbox network thing, so I did, and it worked. No other wifi connected device is having any problems with my network, but suddenly my Xbox 360 was also not detecting any wireless networks. So I restarted it a couple times and it works.

 

Was there an update or something that would effect both consoles? It's just weird that both would have the same problem at the same time.

Because manufacturers don't advertise them. Your best bet is to look for reviews that specify a measurement. HDMI 2.1 isn't out yet and it will take a while to be implemented in 4K TVs. We don't even know what its specs are currently. Modern 4K TVs use HDMI 2.0a or 2.0b (there really isn't much of a difference between these as far as I can tell).

 

I think we'll start to see 4K HDR monitors at some point next year, hopefully in large sizes. If you have a choice you should always go with a monitor. I'm getting a Philips BDM4350UC which is a non-HDR 4K monitor at 43" in size. I don't really care about HDR currently and this monitor fits my budget (~$800).

I should have bought the virtual version when it was on sale. My 360 disc is too scratched up for me wanting to put it in my One.

My copy of Mass Effect is too damaged to be read on Xbox 360, but the One recognizes it and allows me to play.

Neat. Oblivion would be fun but I just recently did 55 hours of Skyrim SE.

 

The only game disc my Xbox One has seen is the DR3 disc I got when I bought the console, and I had FO3 in there forever waiting for it to become BC but by the time that happened I had the digital version that came with FO4.

 

Ohhh and I long ago replace my DR3 disc with a digital copy. I love this new world of digital games...makes me feel like a chump when I see the storage boxes of old games I have around. Yeah right, like I'm ever gonna replay Madden 97 on the PC - yet it still sits in a box of other games that will never be played...just taking up space.

 

 

I had to give up on W_D 2 because the story, characters, voice actors, etc etc just killed it for me.

 

ME2(BC) has been suckling time from me. Amazing how well that game holds up.

 

Also...and sorry to ramble here; Gears of War 4...Holy crap they did I great job. I've had it sitting around and finally got around to playing it (single player campaign). The graphics are freakin' beautiful, but there is also a hell of a fun game to go along with the prettiness. I installed in on my win10 machine (since it's a play anywhere title) and am gonna try it out tonight.

Just tested Gears (play anywhere) on my Win10 machine. f*ckin' beautiful. Play anywhere is a feature that really works for me. Sometimes my wife forces me to be on my PC to keep her company while she is on her PC. To be able to share my play between the xbox and PC is perfect for me. So far I've only been able to take advantage with Quantum Break and now Gears4

Been years since I've played it. One of the first games I bought for 360 after watching my brother play it on his 360. Loved the cave where you see Black Arrow (or Black Bow bandits) fighting mages as you walked in. Game is harder than Skyrim too. Still got my copy and might play it more at the weekend.

It's easier than Skyrim. And Morrowind is easier than Oblivion.

 

Neat. Oblivion would be fun but I just recently did 55 hours of Skyrim SE.

 

Similar problem except that I only recently just did a speedrun of Oblivion.

 

Bring on more BC titles though.

So glad to see Oblivion on the list of BC games, good news to get on your bday haha. Picked up Skyrim SE the other day too and I'm loving it. I can see myself doing a few different playthroughs before putting it down for a bit. Will grab Oblivion once I take a break with Skyrim.

It doesn"t have the DLC yet but I'm supposing they will add them in eventually. Problem is I have the GoTY edition with separate DLC disk. Dunno if it would work on XB1 or not. I'd rather not buy the DLC if I already have them on disk.

 

I'm looking forward to Outlast later this month though.

Play the game from the GOTY disc. It should download and play the version with all the DLC included.

 

I borrowed the GOTY disc from a friend back then so unfortunately, I have to probably to pick them up someday..

Not sure if it was just a preview update but what ever update landed on my Xbox lastnight forced me into doing a factory reset. Craziest thing. At least the error and repair options screen/menus where there and easy. No having to do the hokie pokie or anything.

 

Also Dead Rising 4 is a blast. The lack of countdown isn't so bad since the story moves a bit different. It's all still very much DR. The changed up Frank West isnt so bad. I think they could have picked better shots for the trailers - then maybe people wouldn't have been all like "That isn't Frank West"!

 

Tempted to twitch broadcast some of my playthough.

Although it does have a few glitches. I remember just straight up clipping through a bus while i was driving and it gave me a good chuckle. I also remember blowing up a fresh zombie with a firework blam-bow, leaving nothing but its lower half, and it still got up and tried to attack me, although it couldn't do anything to me because it didnt have an upper half,.

 

Its still a good game though. Even though i still prefer T.J. Rotolo.

Have you guys already heard about Xbox One S being for 250$ for holidays?

 

I have mixed feelings about this move from Microsoft, if for one side it might allow the platform to stand a chance against the PS4 Pro this Christmas and avoid many players to move into Sony's system (after all for the average consumer the specs' difference is not that big of a deal while the price is) and can make those who are keeping some pennies aside for the Nintendo Switch to reconsider their console purchase; but on the other side it might cut some people from buying the Scorpio next year, since by that time people might face a new, much better Xbox, but their current device isn't even 6 months old.

$250 is not too much. If it were a decade ago, it would be $200, but I don't think we'll see a current gen console for $200 ever again.
