Just curious, how did you get invited to that?

I got an email to join the preview program however long ago. Believe theyve just randomly selected a # of members.

Awesome! Thanks, I'll add you. Just one question, would you say you've run into a lot of buggy firmware for these updates?

Early on when they were tweaking Kinect voice commands. Even then it was minor and short lived.

They need a screencap feature, but last time I had my PVR hooked up to my Xbone, I couldn't watch TV. I think there's some sort of handshake issue with the TV, or the cable box has some sort of HDCP issue. I'm not sure.

It's something to do with the software I think, it's used to prevent you from recording TV shows.

yeah it gave me the option to use a usb stick and use my own pictures on the dashboard

I have the custom pic option but what does it mean by USB stick? I have to transfer photos to a USB drive and slap it in the XB1 just to use them? It's cool we can use custom images.. I have a Xbox Dashboard .psd where I could probably make some cool custom-themed stuff.. but damn, sounds like work having to just slap it on a usb stick then upload. Why can't we just upload the sh*t through the OneDrive (SkyDrive) app that's already on the XB1 and do it that way.

I have my DLNA server connected to my Media Player app. Do you have a media server or shared folder you could use, GunWrath?

 

If not, I suggest a program called Universal Media Server. It's my fav!

Crossed, I haven't the slightest clue what that is But if you could explain to me how to use it, I'm sure it's something I'm willing to try. I mean I have no problem uploading onto a USB stick, but it would seem much faster to do it another way, especially the OneDrive way. But I'm down for whatever.

Oh, so DLNA means connecting your Xbox to your PC. Basically, you can browse your PC files on your Xbox, or any other DLNA compliant device. I mostly use it for movies. As you can see from the picture below, this is me browsing my "Movies TV" folder, the "Star Wars Saga", and finally each movie in the folder. It also works with music and photos. I find that UMS is the easiest to use. Just install that on your PC, and adjust the options. Your Xbone should recognize it.

that program I installed won't open for me. I even re-installed, not sure what the deal is. I'll stick with USB, it's not like I'm going to be doing this 100x a month.

GW, Get a NAS device. They're pretty cheap and just straight up convenient to have on your home network.

 

Real time example from just now:

I'm sitting at my big desktop computer upstairs and just this very second used the PS template MS offers up for making custom background on the XboxOne. I saved my final image as a png to my NAS device. Now when I go downstairs I'll fire up the media player on the X1(it will show my NAS as a connected device thanks to DNLA built into the NAS) and I'll open up my pictures folder and select the the new background I just made. Tadah!

 

And then later this evening I could always watch one of the many movies I have stored on it.

Eh, I don't think I can find myself to pay $160 just to have a quicker access to custom bg's for the Xbox man. If I watched films and all from my laptop or whatever, I possibly would but I don't currently. I'll keep that link bookmarked for when I get back into PC though.. just saving up some money now to get the gaming PC I want.

 

What sucks is that I spent a good bit not long ago to build a PC and the guy that was telling me what to get told me wrong and ordered the lamest sh*t ever. It was basically equivalent to a f*cking Gateway PC from the early 2000's. I got my money back though.. all good. I also sold the parts on eBay for a pretty coin.

 

But yeah.. I just don't wanna pour a ton of money into stuff right now just for my laptop. Thanks though man.

 

As far as custom bg's for Xbox, I'm pleased now, that means a bit more pocket money by doing some custom work for clients.

GunWrath, you actually don't need any third-part software to share your files on a network. I just use UMS because it helps with playing certain types of files you can't normally play on Xbox, but if you're just using it for images, Windows has network sharing built in.

Also, that new IP is awesome news. I love Phil Spencer and the way he put that, "I don't need another military space marine game." I hope that whatever they're planning, it makes some sort of amazing effort to include the Kinect. I remember Phil saying something along the lines of 'you need to sell people on the console before they purchase the Kinect.' So I'm sure there's some hugely concerted effort to really redeem their original plans on the Kinect. Good riddance to Don Mattrick.

The only games I don't mind Kinect integration is games like Forza and all that you can use Kinect if you wish to view a car or use head movement while racing as well as leaning but then even then it's only an option. I don't want my entire game manipulated into using Kinect to play. To each their own though but the day Xbox becomes relied on Kinect in all games, is the day they'll lose me as a consumer.

 

Make a new console for Camera games.. let Xbox stay the way it is and their games.

Kinect was a bad idea from the start IMO. At least as something that you have to buy with the console.

I understand, and I think that's why Don Mattrick wanted to bundle the Kinect with the Xbox One. The reason there hasn't been much of a use for the Kinect is because there hasn't been much development for it, and the reason for that is because only 24 million were sold out of 90 million Xbox 360's sold. I think Mattrick was hoping that if Microsoft could guarantee that every Xbox had a Kinect, developers would be more inclined to develop for it.

 

Unfortunately, it turned out to be a situation of putting the cart before the horse. You need to be able to sell the console before you can sell people on the Kinect, and now it's up to Microsoft to figure out the best ways to utilize it. The truth is, we just don't know what it's fully capable of providing, and it's a shame that Microsoft had to de-bundle it. Let's hope there's an Xbox IP that can achieve that.

 

Have you ever seen the movie "Her"? I'd love to play a game like that using the Kinect.

 

 

 

I've also requested that Microsoft add Cortana to the Xbox One. I want my Xbox One to set me up on some dates.
