Found this article last night. I know we don't know too much about the upcomming DirectX 12 update in late 2015. But it looks better everytime I read about it. It says it will double GPU performance. Those games coming out in holday 2015 is gonna be nice. But............One downside to using DirectX 12 on graphics cards that so far relied on DirectX 11 is that theyll be pushed twice as hard as previously, generating more heat in the process. They made the case for the X1 console huge this time. So I hope with all the heat we won't get the second Red Ring of Death. I'm pretty sure they knew about DX12 the whole time, even before the launch of the console. On the orginal 360 I got the RROD, I took it to Best Buy where I bought the console. They plugged it in, they saw the RROD. They let me go get a brand new console right in the store. I think my 360 was three years old. The RROD was good for me. Got a brand new console out of the deal, which was great. After having four PS2's, two Xbox 360's, two PS3's. After three years, yeah I like getting a new console for free. Gives me a piece of mind.

No, it's not going to "double GPU performance". Double the GPU performance means you'd need to have a GPU literally twice as good. It just means that the extra power used by the Kinect is going to go towards the actual console now, so it increases the performance and it will be easier to use the 1080p they need to. It's definitely good news for the developers though.

In other words, it is to reduce the bottleneck of the CPU in the XB1. Nothing major about this update. At this point, Microsoft should be considering a slimmer version of the XB1 and release it without the Kinect.

It's just going to allow devs to better manage how resources are used. They might be able to squeeze 1080p out of more games once it launches. Rumors that Halo 5 will be the first game to use DirectX 12 for XBO.

Just don't think that it will magically add a second GPU or something. The physical hardware power difference between the Xbox One and the PS4 will never go away, but devs will probably be able to juice out a bit more from Xbox One, but it's GPU won't magically gain more, shaders, texture units, or compute units.

My kinect died. 2 day turnover with MS so I'll have my replacement tomorrow. I almost wasn't going to say anything here since it is one of those things people might like to jump all over with bandwagon hate(or what-have-ya).

It is downright painful living without "kinect on" after it becomes part of your routine.

Oh and my thought on Kinect Sports Rivals scanning you(via kinect camera) as the avatar is true. So the whole scanning you to be an avatar that was talked about a page back or so is true(at least in Rivals for now).

any idea what caused it to die?

Is there anyway of re-calibrating the Kinect? Mine sucks at picking my voice up, I practically have to shout at it and even then it comes up with something completely different to what I say.

Thanks for the info guys. Also I seen where Microsoft Xbox division got a new boss here not too long ago. I think I'm going to like the new boss way better than the last one. I think its Phil Spencer. He has already mentioned games more times in two weeks than the last boss did in all the years he was with Xbox. Also, all of a sudden they are trying to get Xbox 360 games to play on the X1 and he talks about free games. I'm sure the free games won't be anything to brag about. Talk about a sudden turn around from how they were steering from before. The new boss is getting it done I hope.

Nathan - yeah that volum up to super load is the way to get the best calibration.

Chat - no clue as to how or why it died. It just didn't listen to me one day and when I manually turned on the Xbox there was no power to the Kinect. After some research it looks like it was a semi common issue with the early builds.

Wrong.

DX12 has nothing to do with the kinect. The usage downgrade will come long before DX12 is released; which DX12 will effect more than just the xbox one.

It may not be double the performance - who knows - but it will improve it dramatically and make it more efficient. Enhancing its capabilities well beyond what it can do now.

But I was right on the fact that it will not double the performance, so get that in your head. Do you know what that means? No. And I've already said that it will help developers, enhancing the capabilities so no need to repeat.

@OnceAgainYoungFitzpatrick: Lol, someone's mad. Are you upset about the fact that I know more about the hardware side more than you? You can't take the fact that "the GPU will be doubled" is a bullsh*t statement? In order for that to happen, every XB1 in the world would need brand new GPU's which are twice as good. You think that comes with a software update? Fool. You can carry on dreaming, I'm not hating. I'm stating facts. There's nothing in my writing that suggests I'm hating on the XB1.

@DarthShinobi: Actually, I just googled it and the January articles only say that they are PLANNING to do it, they haven't unlocked it yet.

Its all good guys. DX12 is what X1 needs. I will be the first one to admit it. They should let 360 games play on X1 for sire. I wish they wouldn't call it an emulator though. It makes it sound cheap in a way and we all know there ain't nothing cheap about it. I have an emulator for PS1 in my Android smartphone. It was $4.99. See what I mean. LOL. But really, I dout they will use the name anyway. It probably won't be called anything anyways. I over think everything. Sorry crew.

It was an emulator that let you play original Xbox games on a 360. It makes sense and all since each new gen /or system is different architecture.

I've been involved in emulation since the birth of MAME. Naturally, saying 'emulator' perks my ears. There are 3 different emulators running between 4 different machines on my first floor alone - that doesn't count when I play III,VC, and SA on my 360.

I'm digging all of this positive news around the X1.

What numbers are you using to reference the 'double the performance'?

Let's look at it this way, if the Xbox One struggles to run 1080p games - some, not all - but fluidly at 720p before DX12. With DX12, it's supposed to allow it to fluidly run games at 1080p and if you use pixel count for both, it would be double(720p: 921,600; 1080p: 2,076,300). Because that is what it's all about, right? 1080p vs 720p. If DX12 can soften the load, it can definitely double its' performance based on going from 720p to 1080p natively

Do you know what that means? No. Don't get ignorant.

I'm just going off what I think they meant by 'doubling the performance', and I don't think you would know much more.

I should get more into Killer Instinct, I haven't played it too much.

Right. I'm going to be friendly here. Let me teach you what that means as it seems you do not know what DOUBLE means. The XB1 runs at 1.3 teraflops, has 768 stream processors and 16 ROPS, with a clock speed of 853 MHz. When they say double the performance, that means all these things would have to be doubled, which is pretty much impossible especially the GPU it has. Now they can however boost the teraflops more, as Sony demonstrated, but not double. But definitely none of the other things. You'd literally need a GPU that's twice as powerful to double the performance, but that doesn't mean you'll get nothing out of it. It will help, and it's actually half going towards the software side of the console. Even some developers have said that it's been overly exaggerated.

It does. The statement from Microsoft actually says the performance will be doubled. So I'm aiming this at the dumb employees. In fact, it's impossible. Treyarch and Sony's PS4 ICE programmer just stated recently to be skeptical with the statement, and they are tech nerds so they have the credibility to know. Just to be clear, Microsoft should have said the DX12 would help the XB1 with handling the software side better, and would only help the actual gaming performance by a bit. NOT double.

Okay, I can't argue that the GPU will be doubled because I have no idea what that means. I was just referring to the article. All I know is, reading all the articles, all X1 games that need to be 1080p 60 FPS will be 1080p 60 FPS. Also, by the looks, Microsoft has a nice E3 venue coming up. Maybe they will mention something then but I dout it, because we all know that games will be the topic.

My replacement kinect arrived today. Thank goodness...those few days of not being able to openly talk to my TV were rough.

Maybe I'll Twitch broadcast something tonight in celebration.

-I may update this post with some developers blog stuff I read today on the differences DX11 plus the power rerouting is working out...if I can find it. It had a funny tone to it but it made it sound like everything will be full 1080-

If that's what they meant, then who cares. If it can get the xbox to run 1080p at 60fps. Then why would it matter if it comes up short of, 'doubling performance'? They double the visual output.

Both systems fail anyways, they should've easily put in better hardware - at the expense of a higher cost of course - with a possibility of doing 4k gaming.

If these consoles were able to play games at 4K with 30FPS they would cost $1000.
