See, this is what I don't get.

The main complaint against DualShock is that it's too small and light compared to the Xbox 360 controller.

How can they beef up the size and shape without DIRECTLY using the Xbox 360 Controller shell?

If this is what most gamers want, why is it ugly? And really, do looks matter when it's in your hands? For all you guys know that could feel extremely comfortable, yet you're bashing it due to how it looks?

Meh, it could be just me but I actually prefer the Dualshock 3 over the Xbox 360 controller. Yes it's smaller but that just makes it less of a chore to hold when gaming and the thumbsticks being level is a feature that just makes the Dualshock infinitely better, at least in my opinion.

Though once again it's just a prototype and most likely just like the banana controllers that Sony debuted with the PS3 a few years back it'll most likely revert back to the good 'ol Dualshock form as time progresses and development on the machine and its accessories gets put to frontal focus.

Personally, I think that you can't really go much better for a controller than the Dualshock, if you wanted it slightly larger than most likely Sony will likely release two separate controllers just so people can get the experience that they want on their machine. 'Tis a shame they couldn't come up with a better prototype though, I mean a six year old could come up with that show some ingenuity Sony.

On a more console related note I think I'll be buying the PS4 and leaving the Xbox 720 or whatever they're going to call it on the shelves. Microsoft have disappointed me far too many times for me to overlook it and simply shrug it off, whether it be their shoddy buisness practices or their down right terrible customer service I'm done with buying anything from them from here on out.

Apart from Windows, I still like Windows 7.

Lol that's f*cking ugly.

Atleast they didn't use these.

And behind is probably the Dev Kit of the PS4 and nobody seem to care wow.gif , anyway, the only ugly thing I found about the controller are the joysticks, Im sure this is a prototype given to the devs, the final product will be pretty much the same, but with little changes, maybe the joystick changes.

What the Devil is that big black thing in the controller?

I must say that this design is very confusing.

It's a touch-pad, not a screen like most people think, the Vita has one, but it's on the back and was only ever used to actually improve the gameplay in some chapters in Uncharted: Golden Abyss. Most games didn't really take full advantage of it, which I think will be the case as well on PS4. Why did Sony add it is just beyond me. confused.gif

Well, that touchpad is the main reason I would say, why couldn't they have it on the back like the Vita?

Not really, but I don't want it to be so goddamn ugly though, and I hope it's comfortable, I thought the DS3 was comfortable unlike most people.

Is that a speaker in the middle of the controller?

Yep, Im sure those ugly things will be better placed on the controller, this is just a prototype, look at the dev kit, looks very old also.

I like it. Shame there isn't a view of the triggers (I hope there's triggers)

I like it. Not sure what the screen touch pad thingy will do but the controller looks nice (it probably feels great too!).

That is ugly as hell, looks too wide, and the sticks are concave rather than convex/domed. That's one thing on the Xbox controller I REALLY hate, it the f*cking concave sticks, they are retarded, hard to grip and sweat just builds in them, which is why Custom controllers have the option to have domed sticks with Xbox controllers.

I quite like the trackpad, it's sort of like a third joystick. As long as it can be reached by the thumbs it could be great for the likes of melee combat, weapon switching, sight zooming etc.

What I was really hoping for was a re-invention of the joystick. I am pretty sure we have the technology today to allow for very precise, fast on screen movement with only minimal movement from the thumb. Sort of like a concave track pad wherein you place your thumb, only moving the bottom part. Hard to conceptualise in text but I think we need start pushing towards mouse like precision and speed.

That's the issue with judging controllers by how they look. Often you'll see a controller and think "wow, that looks odd, therefore it must be uncomfortable". The PS3 boomerang controller you mention were actually extremely comfortable. Some people who were able to use them before they were changed said it was the most comfortable controller. Sony had to change them because the reception was poor (by judging it on how it looks).

I wouldn't judge anything before you can get your hands on it. Heck, I still think the WiiU controller has to be incredibly uncomfortable (it's a rectangle?!). I honestly can't say for sure though because I've never used it, and I'd most likely be wrong judging by everyone elses opinion.

xbox 360 controller fits the hand as its curvy where as the ps3 controllers has the shape of a brick. Also the anologue stick on the ps3 controller has a bump instead of a dip like the xbox 360 control, making it harder to grip on the ps3.

Most people i know would choose the PS3 controller over the 360 controller any day of the week. The PS3 controller as it is now is truly perfection. But i'm not against the addition of things such as touch pads, extra triggers or whatever they think is necassary.

I'd say it depends on the size of one's hands. People with large hands seem to appreciate the Xbox's controller. And, as this topic makes quite clear, each small detail in the controllers' design splits the audience quite nicely, be it the shape of the analogues, the triggers or anything else.

When it's 40 degrees C or over 100 fahrenheit you tend to sweat doesn't matter what you are doing. Hands sweat a lot when it's warm particularly thumbs.

You can't say you've never had a single bit of sweat on your hands when gaming.

The absolute best thing for what you're describing would be a trackball in place of the right analog stick. This has been attempted before and it resulted in a significant improvement in ability to aim. Still not as good as a mouse, but certainly much better than an analog stick. Take a look at this article for more information.

A mix out of DS3 and Boomerang Cotnroller (did it actually ever have a proper name?).

I'm still wondering what the heck that touchpad is doing there, I mean, the analog sticks are always in the way... so what the heck? confused.gif

It looks even better to me with the new picture. My only concern at this point are the L2/R2 triggers, if they've improved the shape and the springs over those of the DS3, this could sway my decision in Sony's favor when it comes to choosing which next-gen console I want.

Keep in mind that these are leaked "prototypes" if they are true so it might not look like that.

This is nothing that has "leaked", just someone who made it (not me) of what it might look like.

PS4 Controller?

So this was uploaded:

and like this particular youtube comment says:

Tomorrow (the 16th) they will show about the ps2

The 17th- Psp

The 18th- Ps3

The 19th- Psvita

The 20th-???? *cough* ps4 *cough*

It might be just that, I mean we'll see soon enough.

UPDATE

Here's the guy who took that new pic of the controller saying bout it:

The triggers are much more similar to the Xbox 360 'springy' triggers. That's a microphone (similar to VITA, Wii U) and that is also a headset port. Touch screen is resistive display, single touch, used for battery levels, friend lists, mini u.i blah blah. Taken a while ago, only had access to it via someone else.

I must admit that I actually like it a little. It's definitely better than the boomerang design.

They could have just placed the analog sticks a little more ergonomic.

Do those handles seem disproportionate to anyone else? The left one under the D-pad seems to be jutting straight downward, while the right one is angled backward as it is on the DualShock controller as we know it. They just don't look symmetrical. Are my eyes playing tricks on me?

Alright, if they keep this controller design I think I'm definitely picking up a PlayStation 4 rather than a Nextbox. I still think they're going to change it back to the DualShock design, though, and if they do they're going to lose most of my interest. I might still consider it though if they keep the springy triggers. The thing I hated about the PS3 was that even if you used a third-party controller, you still had to deal with mushy triggers; no one made a PS3 controller with triggers that felt like the Xbox 360's triggers.

Please, Sony, please don't send this thing the way of the Boomerang.

@Cacti: I'm pretty sure that's just the lighting and the perspective playing tricks on your eyes.

I'll hold off reservations on controller design until I see the final design. We all know from the PS3 how much a controller can change before release, and no doubt this is just a early unit and the final one will be more streamlined. I do hope the concave analog sticks make it to the final design though, they're much better than convex in my opinion.

I'm not going to base my console decision on just the controller either, but if Microsoft doesn't get their act together fast the controller will be the least of their worries.

All they have to do is change those triggers and I'll be their newest customer. Xbox sucks sh*t, I recently started to develop some hatred for it. It's always f*cking with me...
