ViceOfLiberty
GTA III had a mafia don based on the Godfather, which took place in the 40's. It also included a mob pimp based on Sonny from A Bronx Tale, which took place in the 60's. Liberty had a feeling that you couldn't peg as 2001 if you didn't know that's when it took place. It's simply "Timeless". Plenty of people had cell phones in 2001, yet we received a stylized pager. It didn't feel the need to actively make fun of fashion trends in 2001, or parody the backstreet boys. It was a world, that took place in an alternate 2001 inspired by characters and themes that range several decades. This is, in my opinion, why the feel and atmosphere of III hasn't been replicated. In Vice City, the map was small, but the areas it included were charicatures of standout neighborhoods in Miami. There was no intention to make it look like REAL 1986 Miami, only to make it a believable and fun setting for a Scarface-Esque game. Same with SA and Los Santos/Fierro/Venturas. Do you think in recent times, to its own detriment, R* has become increasingly more focused on recreating real life to a T? Southern SA doesn't hardly seem like it was designed as a good charicature of LA for a Heist epic as much as it seems like it was made to be a map that carbon copies a few streets in Los Angeles. All of the characters in V seem like R* thought they definitely had to fit the year 2013. Like they thought LS had to be some pretentious millennial silicon valley type thing because that's what it is in the media in 2013. I see alot of people saying, "The game should be here at this time because then we can have these types of characters and things going on." But why can't creative liberty be used to insert certain types of characters and period-inspired themes ANYWHERE? So what if the triads aren't a big thing in modern day. So what if the Italian American gangsters aren't what they used to be, or the street gangs aren't at their height anymore....Why can't they be?! It's fiction! Why can't a game be set in time X but have elements from time Y and time Z in it, to create a certain atmosphere. In a fictional game, why do we have to play by the rules of what modern day is in real life? ViceOfLiberty
Go back to Saints Row IV, please. What are you talking about? I'm referencing sh*t like Pump Action Pimp, rocking a 1970's style Pimp with an Uzi under orders of a mob boss based on a 60's character in 2001. Not that Saints Row Bullsh*t. f*ck off with that. DOUGL4S1
If you're talking about some characters stuck in a past for some reason, like how Michael only watches old Vinewood movies, I don't see a problem with that, and I'm sorry if that's what you meant and I misinterpreted your thread. The image that I got with "Why can't a game be set in time X but have elements from time Y and time Z in it, to create a certain atmosphere. In a fictional game, why do we have to play by the rules of what modern day is in real life?" I tought a game set in the 80s where you control a cyborg terminator that rides a cowboy horse and uses an iPhone. If that's what you meant, leave the "ruining a perfecly crafted environment and ambientation for nostalgic purposes and to fit with the story with modern-day stuff" part for the modders that add 2017 cars into Vice City. I'm talking about not being afraid to send some dude to knock off mob bosses in a cigar bar because "that doesn't happen in 2013" or "The Triads don't really have a foothold in America in modern day so it doesnt make since for them to be in the game" bullsh*t.
