The movie release date has been pushed forward to November 2, 2018. This is great news. I'm expecting a trailer sometime in May or June. Yay!!!

The trailer is expected to come out this week according to a source with connection to Fox Spain. It was actually seen in Vegas at CinemaCon and got great reviews. I also have a 'forum friend' on a Queen site who saw the full movie at a test showing just a few days ago, and while he's contracted not to say anything, he does say that it won't disappoint. Here are two official pics recently released:

Here are some thoughts from someone who saw the trailer:

I really wanted to see how Sacha Baron-Cohen would have done Freddie. I like Rami Malek but his bug-eyes annoy the sh*t out of me. I even googled "bug-eyes" to double check I was using the appropriate term and his photo came up second in Google Image search.

Overrall, I will be excited to see this though. Will definitely be in the cinema for this one.

I believe Sasha would be perfect for mimicking Freddie's flair but Rami has the bone structure pretty much down to a tee. I hope he can nail the accent.

Judging by the trailer, he nailed the accent. However, his voice is a bit deeper and not as nasally as Freddie's. But it's a movie. It's not going to be perfect, and I'm cool with that. But as for Lee's job of being Brian May? Holy f*cking sh*t. He sounds EXACTLY like Brian in that trailer. Insane!!

Can't believe it's been nearly 2 months since the first trailer dropped. Surely we should be getting another one soon. I'm itching to see more dialogue!

Interesting article from Rolling Stone regarding the movie:

Also, isn't this pic fantastic? Can't get over how awesome it looks.

So?  Who saw it.  The movie itself was so-so, but Malek f*cking killed it.  You know it’s a good performance when they show a real picture of Mercury during the post script and need to remember that was what he really looked like.

Also very happy to report that Mike Myers’ character makes a subtle nod to Wayne’s World.  Wayne’s World was the first time I heard Bohemian Rhapsody, and over the years that song has only become more important to me.  The greatest rock and roll song of all time.  The pinnacle of the genre.  Also I was half expecting Myers’ character to call Mercury, “Donkey!”

I watched the movie yesterday only. One word to describe it: BRILLIANT.

Malek as Freddie is more interesting than his music. He is thoughtful and insight-rich. The point isn't a biopic but it's being criticized already for lacking specifics related to Mercury's sexuality. I was disappointed that we didn't learn more about his (Mercury's) childhood. No mention or depiction of his early years in practicing music. Only the only which he keeps with him when working at the airport. I liked how the movie covered his story with the four extra incisors and large vocal chamber. I was impressed with Aiden Gillen's performance as well. This movie is for those who want to experience a full-on Queen Nostalgia. The movie overall is about quality and virtue that reside in the success. It displays rock music as the one place where a total outsider such as Mercury could completely belong.

If the the Academy Awards folks don't nominate Malek for Best Actor...I'm going to slap them. Also, the Castro clone who played Paul should be cast as Patrick Cowley in the the latter's bio film that will never happen.

Looks more like a romanticized version of Mercury and Queen. I think Sacha's version would have probably been better because he wouldn't have cared to get more personal with it. Probably why he left the film because the rest of Queen wanted to whitewash everything.

I've seen the movie 5 times. Not because I necessarily thought it was the perfect film about Queen, because frankly, it's not. Far from it. But because I'm a Queen geek. It's great to hear their music in surround sound. And the recreation of the Live Aid sequence is nothing but pure ecstasy. I'm moved every time I see it.

That aside, the movie is more fantasy than real life. Here are just a few liberties taken:

Spoiler

  • The band did not sell their van so they could afford money for some studio time. The band were actually lucky when they were invited to test a new fancy studio in the off hours when other acts like Bowie weren't recording.
  • Fat Bottomed Girls did not exist pre-Bo Rhap. It was composed in 1978 (four years later than depicted in the movie).
  • In real life, Freddie actually didn't want to do Live Aid. Bob Geldoff had to convince him. Also, Paul Prenter did not keep Live Aid a secret from Freddie. So that whole part was a direct lie for the sake of creating drama, which is frustrating. Now granted, Paul Prenter really was a prick in real life. He was a HORRIBLE influence on Freddie and thankfully I think they portrayed his relationship with Freddie well.
  • Freddie was not diagnosed with AIDS in 1985. It wasn't until 1987 that he was diagnosed. He also waited to tell the band. I think that meeting occurred somewhere around 1988-89. Though I'm sure the others knew their friend wasn't well. I will say that Freddie probably knew he'd get AIDS in 1985. Reportedly, he had somewhere around a dozen HIV tests starting around 1984, each one saying he was HIV positive (he took so many because they weren't 100% accurate and he was hoping for one to tell him he was negative).
  • Queen never broke up. Totally FALSE. The band played together 2 months before Live Aid, which concluded a 40 something date tour for The Works album. Now, the band definitely went their separate ways throughout the 80s, working on solo projects, for example (which by the way Roger Taylor was the first member to go solo, not Freddie) and there were concerns in 1985 that the band would break up. But that particular concert brought them back together, stronger than ever before. No doubt.

I could go on. But I'll stop there.

I did like the movie. Certain parts were really well done. But it could have been so much more. But frankly, a SBC version of the movie would have sucked more. Glad he got kicked from the project. Because at the very least, I thought they were respectful of Freddie's legacy. He never wanted to be remembered as an "AIDS poster boy." He wanted to be remembered for his music. And this movie definitely celebrated that. Plus they addressed Freddie's relationship with Mary which was beautifully told (the break up scene was one of my favorite moments of the movie). Furthermore, we got to see just how lonely Freddie was. That's something he himself admitted to in interviews. You could have fame, fortune, and everything that goes with it...but you could also be super lonely. Surrounded by people that don't really care about you. Only your money. I wish they'd shown more of Jim Hutton though. He was truly a special person in Freddie's life. He deserved more screen time (and also, they totally f*cked with his background story...but I won't got there as I've complained enough).

I'd say the movie was quite the success. Nearly $800 million worldwide, best picture and actor at the Golden Globes, and they're re-releasing the movie in theaters as a sing-along.

Watched the movie. Brilliant. I wish it was longer and covered Freddie's youth and last days. I wish we could go back to the time when we had 3-4 hour long movies a lot more.
