Sonic Unleashed PS2 problem

I have Sonic Unleashed for the Playstation 2. I put the disc in, the Playstation 2 loading screen plays, but after the Playstation 2 logo disappears, there is only a black screen. I don't see the loading screen or anything. The light on the controller doesn't come on. Help? I really want to play this game again.

Could be the disk too, I have vague recollections of waiting and hoping a game would start after the initial PS2 splash screen.
