Should blips be invisible in free roam?

For a while, back in the day, you could pay Lester to reveal blips in freemode. That always led me to believe that we were supposed to be off radar unless doing something, or that I was in some kind of lobby that had a different setting than intended. Unfortunately, that wasn't the case. I'd much prefer no blips in freemode, only showing up when you're in an armed vehicle, in a fight, or within sight of another player.

I'd at least like it so my max stealth takes me off radar when I sneak, as opposed to just letting me shuffle faster.

Stealth, sneak, none of that does anything! Learned that on the Deliver EMP heist, for weeks I was sneaking (it's why my stealth is at max), made no difference, I was still either spotted or not spotted regardless of if I was sneaking.

Stealth is pointless in GTA:O and is one of the things I hope they improve (but will not hold my breath). The description of SR gave me a little hope with the stealth and teamwork - turns out it was something of nothing.

Typical Rockstar logic though. Throw $350k on propellers and you can glide off the radar. Get out of the plane and you instantly appear on the map. Why would no noise being made only affect your radar status if you're in a plane? Standing still would have the same effects i.e. no noise.

I would say yes, that way, in game phone and messaging would actually be more needed if one would want to tell someone where they are, and the players would have to use common sense and map skills to find them. Thermal goggles would also help, only reason I'd use them for.

Or, could do it like death match. You do things to make noise, you show up on the map. You move in silence, you dont show up at all.

free roam is a public lobby

i have a way more simple solution

dont want to run into players? f*ck off to a invite only lobby

I am kind leaning towards blips always off with the option to call Lester and show blips.

Or, anytime you are in a armed vehicle or aircraft your blip is always on.

Basically that's how TDMs operate. Don't have a clue why R* won't implement it to FreeMode

OT- Invisible Blips should only be visible in certain situations/ actions caused by the player such as;

  • Discharging an un-supressed weapon near a player
  • Using an option to reveal all/certain players from Lester for a certain amount of time
  • Flying an aircraft, but only within a certain range of players
  • 3-5 Star Wanted Level will get your on the map
  • A player that has a High Mental State
  • Frequent use of explosive weapons. Instead of making a player's blip appear for this one, a blip similar to your noise indicator in stealth missions should be used where the explosion occured.
  • And absolute visual contact with another player. We don't want another player suddenly knowing that you are behind a wall infront of him.

Because tdm is a small area of a giant map?

How I'd like to see it, based on other multiplayer games both PVP and PVE:

IMO, blips should appear...

-For your friends/crew/org members

-If you call Lester and pay a fee, but only for a short period of time ($5k for one minute maybe?)

-When you're doing ANY freemode work, but only after you've collected cargo or are doing a sale

-When you're within a certain distance, regardless of LOS (reasonable to believe that everybody having SecuroServe apps would allow some sort of GPS positioning, methinks)

-When you're wanted, only within doubled range from the above if 1-2 stars and map-wide if 3-5

-If there's a bounty on your head

-When firing a weapon without a suppressor

I see what you're saying but the majority would hate it. In GTA4 you had the option to join lobbies just like that but..... They always only had like 3 people in them because no one wants to play if they cant find you in a gigantic city lol. Its boring after 20mins. You could barely find others in LC. Now imagine LS lol. You would never interact with players unless you made your location known. They should just add the preference option like in IV. Then everyones happy.

I kind of agree. I don't particularly think that all these methods of isolating yourself from other players in a multiplayer environment is the way forward.

For once I disagree.

Play quietly, play nicely and keep yourself to yourself, you should be able to remain hidden. Other players shouldn't need to know your position if you are just out taking in the scenery or stocking up on snacks, ammo etc.

For some things, the blip should be there, as previously mentioned. This would satisfy those PvP players, they get to go after other PvP players. There's nothing less satisfying that attacking a player who has no intention of fighting. Going 12-0 up on someone who doesn't want to fight you is no achievement. Hidden blips unless xyz happens would avoid this.

Some players would remain hidden. Others would be easily found. It gives people the option to be aggressive or passive in a busy session without having to worry about some dick in a jet coming to troll them for no reason. Players would have the option to play with others in a public session while keeping the security of a closed session should they wish to (and if their behavior warrants it).

I think I have to agree this.

Why blip on when you're in an armed vehicle? When you're running around you're also carrying guns, so you aren't defenceless but are a potential danger, but you want to be invisible. Attach a gun to a vehicle and all of a sudden everybody should know where you are? Armed is armed, wether you're carrying it by yourself (and even be able to swap between lots of weapons) or you attach it to a vehicle.

Common sense , you know players are going to be armed, that is a given, what's not is the type of vehicle a player might be in.

I had a 6 hour gangwar with my homies on gta IV. We took off the blips manually and drove around doing a whole lotta gang sh*t.. that was THE funnest anything I ever played next to socom.

Blips off add intensity. Intensity makes games memorable.

I've been thinking the same for awhile, this would add so much more to the game experience. Especially if implemented in an as thorough way as in those methods listed above. I've also been thinking that only CEO's/MC's should be able to spot work being done by other CEO's/MC's, not including VIP missions and Clubhouse contracts. Like you have to be hooked into the network to be able to track others crates. Though if you spot a delivery van while not registered nothing should stand in your way if you want to engage.

I've always been partial to free roam blips being like they are in DMs. Only on your radar if the person is doing something "aggressive": firing weapons, driving fast, has a bounty, driving an armed vehicle or is/just was in your direct line of sight.

If they're walking, driving respectably or have their weapons put away the blip fades once you cant see then anymore.

ABSO-f*ckIN-LUTELY.

If you're not doing anything but driving around or simply shopping i think you should be virtually invisible. The second you hit a car/person, fire a weapon, commit any overt crime (robbery, carjacking, murder) then you should show up plain as day. I don't know why it couldn't be based on police detection, especially the version in SP.

Like I said..... It won't happen. Large sums of people would stop playing this game. And thats messing with R* money. So yeah, good luck with that. The closest we'll get to this feature in FR, is if R* gives us lobby preference options. But like I said again... Have fun in your 5-10 player lobby. Its fun for like an hour but after that man it gets boring lol. But hey, maybe they'll us in the future, would be fun for awhile, i guess. Edited by AH-6_BirdTurd

It's arguable if it would screw with their revenue stream because there is nothing concrete to prove if the pvp heavy players are contributing in shark cards, or negatively impacting it already by glitching or mods.

It also feels like it's just letting the griefing continue unabated because we care so little about the experience over the threat that players MIGHT quit.

I'd be all for it if your blip was revealed in the following instances:

You have a weapon drawn, not just fired.

You have a wanted level.

You're in a weaponized vehicle

Friends should also be revealed to one another by interaction menu option. You could choose "reveal blip to friends"

Ultimately it's not changing

Red Dead Redemption had a "friendly server" option.

I have no idea, why this was never inplemented into GTA5

If we'd have 100+ player sessions, f*ck yea, because right now it'd be hard to find players outside the usual crowded locations (LSC...).

This is an idea i have been talking about since GTA Online started to exist. I would make the game quite a lot more fun and interesting and it would remove 95% of the things people bitch about. Blips should work but as someone already explained when you do stuff. A good thing we have in the game is the mental state and when you increase it, the more duration your blip has same as with the hunt the beast and when you go full you have it always on and after lets say half of the mental state you cant use passive anymore and so on.

There are quite a lot of ways to tweak it to make it perfect and it is really sad that this idea might never happen but if it does it will make free roam amazing. So i am all for it and considering most of the comments everyone wants it. Maybe we can manage to make it happen.

so? who says they want to be found? If they're friends you could easily find them. If not just keep on driving / flying until you find someone you get along with.

Try disabling your minimap and blips for a bit, you'll notice it's pretty easy to spot players in expensive vehicles, silly outfits & especially by the sound of cop sirens following them around. It makes the game so much better imo.

Try it in passive if you don't want to risk it since everyone else has their HUD enabled. It's worth trying for sure, you'll probably notice how nice the graphics are after playing for years staring at a 16bit minimap with one eye :)

It surprises me how many people here think this is a good gameplay idea. If you want to stay hidden in a session and not be bothered why go to a public session at all?

From a gameplay perspective it would just slow the game down and make it a game of hide n seek. Imagine seeing only 3-4 players in a 3 hour play session...what's the point?

For those who think it would cause less greifing you are the ones who would suffer most since players who want to pvp would find creative ways to find you and you wouldn't see them coming.

It seems those in favor of this idea have some idealized notion of what it might be like in their perfect virtual world and can't grasp what the daily reality would actually look like...a barren empty map where you get randomly killed and your killer just vanishes into the night, never to be seen again.
