Should blips be invisible in free roam?

Personally, I don't really like how everyone can see where everyone else is at all times. Maybe have blips flair up on the map when you can pinpoint where the person is like when gunfire or explosions go off, or you can use Lester to temporarily reveal all blips, and so on. Have people with bounties or when their signal is being broadcast (from crates, for example) be the ones who show all the time. My thoughts is this would pretty much reduce griefing in general and can make things more exciting and surprising.

What would you think if Rockstar changed how blips work in Free Roam?

I think "griefing" is exaggerated these days. The new stuff is balanced; not that hard to fight off.

Options are always good though.

The new glider taking you off the map is pretty cool actually.

Depends on who you talk to. Yesterday, I went 12 hours playing with the Smugglers update crates missions without a single person bothering me. Today? I went 3 hours with nothing but constant idiots trying to grief me and going out of their way to do so. Some never or rarely deal with griefing, others deal with it constantly, and some are hit-or-miss in experience. I just think this would make it significantly less likely and result in being killed simply being a matter of "ugh, they keep getting me" rather than "f*cker's trying to bully me". I haven't had the chance to play with the glider, though.

I am kind leaning towards blips always off with the option to call Lester and show blips.

Or, anytime you are in a armed vehicle or aircraft your blip is always on.

Since you mentioned that, I'm thinking being automatically off the map while on foot or in a non-weaponized vehicle would be a good start.

Another reason I had this thought is I think massive games of tag where everyone hunts for one person with the person who gets the kill being 'it' just seems extremely interesting to me.

Blips off normally. Driving a tank or any vehicle with weapons. Blips on.

Fire your weapon, blip on for 30 secs

Why blip on when you're in an armed vehicle? When you're running around you're also carrying guns, so you aren't defenceless but are a potential danger, but you want to be invisible. Attach a gun to a vehicle and all of a sudden everybody should know where you are? Armed is armed, wether you're carrying it by yourself (and even be able to swap between lots of weapons) or you attach it to a vehicle.

I think IV had a setting when you crouched your blip would disappear in certain matches.Been so long now i maybe wrong.

It's way too late to remove blips now imo but i'd join a different type of blipless session (if it was free-aim only).

Blips on for armed vehicles always show and player blips appear when within a certain range. Thats how it should be imo.

I see what you're saying but the majority would hate it. In GTA4 you had the option to join lobbies just like that but..... They always only had like 3 people in them because no one wants to play if they cant find you in a gigantic city lol. Its boring after 20mins. You could barely find others in LC. Now imagine LS lol. You would never interact with players unless you made your location known. They should just add the preference option like in IV. Then everyones happy.

I think it could work if blips we're invisible, however only if there were more players in each game. 30 players on a map as big as los Santos isnt really enough to be able to find people, ever been in a game of 20 - 30 people and you look on the map and it still looks like hardly anyone is in the game? I think if 50 or 60 people were in each server then invisible blips would work perfectly. Instead of that though, what about two different types of servers, one core and one hardcore, core is normal and hardcore has no radar and health regen or something.

I always thought this, it should defiantly be a case of calling lester to reveal the location of a player for 60 second air so rather than hiding your own blip. Especially as a big notification comes up telling everyone you're off radar (or basically up to something).

Would make it a lot more interesting gameplay wise as you could take more difficult routes to deliver cargo to avoid main roads, direct routes that kind of thing or lay low by using an inconspicuous vehicle, driving inconspicuously to avoid detection.

You could roll up on a biker crew for example in a battered old van, do a drive by or hop out and blast everyone then speed away with your turbo tuned sleeper taking everyone by surprise. Hopefully ensuing in a kick ass chase scene where theres a real possibility of you losing your persuers, ducking down an alley way to launch a second ambush or switch to a back up vehicle.

It would open up far more possibilities

I've asked for this since day one. In fact, I don't know why they were ever permanently on in freeroam.

IMO they shouldn't show a players position unless

They have a high (4* or highter) wanted level

They are psychotic (or close to)

They are near by and shooting

They are doing something which would attract attention

A freeroam event calls for it (i.e. selling cargo - "your position has been leaked" or "the cargo is tracked")

Options to show your player blip to friends/crew too, totally optional and you set it not other players, not even a crew leader, CEO or MC president.

The above is for freeroam only not contact missions, LTS, DMs, Heists etc.

Basically that's how TDMs operate. Don't have a clue why R* won't implement it to FreeMode

OT- Invisible Blips should only be visible in certain situations/ actions caused by the player such as;

  • Discharging an un-supressed weapon near a player
  • Using an option to reveal all/certain players from Lester for a certain amount of time
  • Flying an aircraft, but only within a certain range of players
  • 3-5 Star Wanted Level will get your on the map
  • A player that has a High Mental State
  • Frequent use of explosive weapons. Instead of making a player's blip appear for this one, a blip similar to your noise indicator in stealth missions should be used where the explosion occured.
  • And absolute visual contact with another player. We don't want another player suddenly knowing that you are behind a wall infront of him.

I kind of agree. I don't particularly think that all these methods of isolating yourself from other players in a multiplayer environment is the way forward.

For once I disagree.

Play quietly, play nicely and keep yourself to yourself, you should be able to remain hidden. Other players shouldn't need to know your position if you are just out taking in the scenery or stocking up on snacks, ammo etc.

For some things, the blip should be there, as previously mentioned. This would satisfy those PvP players, they get to go after other PvP players. There's nothing less satisfying that attacking a player who has no intention of fighting. Going 12-0 up on someone who doesn't want to fight you is no achievement. Hidden blips unless xyz happens would avoid this.

Some players would remain hidden. Others would be easily found. It gives people the option to be aggressive or passive in a busy session without having to worry about some dick in a jet coming to troll them for no reason. Players would have the option to play with others in a public session while keeping the security of a closed session should they wish to (and if their behavior warrants it).

I agree with above. This would actually make the game a lot more dynamic and make lobbies feel new and fresh again. Rockstar could also add a new free toggleable Lester service where you could make yourself appear on the map for others if you want pvp. Possibilities and ways to balance it out are limitless, just use your imagination.

I always thought you should only be able to see another players blip if they get within a set radius of your location (1 mile maybe?).

Besides that, your blip would show if you have a bounty or are in a heavily armed/armoured. However it would still work in the same sense as I mentioned before, the signal wouldn't cover the whole map but just significantly more than the regular detection redius would (2, possible 3 miles). This way if you have a bounty you still stand a chance against all the pricks that'll tryhard you in their jet for a single G. Players in assault vehicles would be detected from further away giving you a better chance to take cover or fight back, jets would give off an even greater signal because f*ck jets (this wouldn't apply to the Besra).

As for those collecting/selling cargo, it would work a bit differently. You would still be able to be detected by other players (and as a result, show on the minimap), but only once you get close enough to another player that you're in their line of sight (LOS) and the software on their phone can establish a good enough connection to pinpoint you on the minimap (I was thinking this range could be about 5 blocks, maybe a little more). Although, without line of sight the connection gets a little fuzzy and you need to get closer in order to pinpoint them on the map.

The main way to hunt cargo shipments however would be to use Trackify (that's the correct spelling right). If you want to destroy a shipment it really shouldn't be as easy as it currently is. You would open up the app and it would work as usual, you just look for the red blips, however since it's not an AI your looking for, it wouldn't be as easy as looking for the Post OP vans in the Pacific Standard setup. You actually have to look for other player to pinpoint their position and to predict where they're going to go. Once you find them and get close enough to them that they show up on your minimap (as well as everyone elses within the signal radius of the chasing player), the majority of the challenge is now passed on the seller. He now has to lose you in order to hide himself from you, as well everyone else within close enough proximity to the chaser. If they manage to get far enough out of your signal range and stay out for long enough, they'll become invible on the map again, to see their blip again you just have to find them again.

TLDR; blips on the minimap for standard free roam work based on a general area detection radius, while blips for those trandporting shipments depend on the signal radius of the Trackify app that, unlike the first one, can be interrupted by breaks in the LOS connection such as buildings and varying elevations.

This is the sort of dynamic atmosphere the game needs. Instead of me having to pay $1,000 (hide blip) or $15,000 (ghost operation) for a set time of being invisible, I should effectively have it as long as I can manage to keep my distance from other players. This way players who can think on their toes and make quick getaways are actually rewarded for their skill and not just reassured by the game that the other players always have the upper hand simply because they can see you at all times.

Edit: Forgot to mention that things like 1v1 deathmatches and impromptu races would of course show your blips to each other, besides that it would seem like nothing is going to players that aren't involved or are too far away.

No we already have that option. If you dont want to see other players then simply join an invite only. No blips would be pointless in a public lobby.

Everyone that's ever tried an off radar glitch where you can't be seen and also can't see anyone knows knows it enhances the game x 1000 fold. I spent a whole day like that once and it was by far the most exciting time I've ever played this game, truly unforgettable, immersive and intense.

Yes. Blips on when doing noise (shooting, cops after you), maybe in VIP missions.

This wouldn't stop so called "griefing", but it would force PvP-oriented players to be more creative. Right now it's almost impossible to create an ambush in GTA:O (even if you have enough tools for that task).

For a while, back in the day, you could pay Lester to reveal blips in freemode. That always led me to believe that we were supposed to be off radar unless doing something, or that I was in some kind of lobby that had a different setting than intended. Unfortunately, that wasn't the case. I'd much prefer no blips in freemode, only showing up when you're in an armed vehicle, in a fight, or within sight of another player.

I'd at least like it so my max stealth takes me off radar when I sneak, as opposed to just letting me shuffle faster.

Maybe you could set this one up as preference, sorta like the Targeting Mode. I believe that it was a preference in GTA IV. If you are in the same organization as another player, you should be able to see the blip so you can find your friends easier.

But I really like this idea. It would add some realism to the game. Not to mention that even the stealth mechanics can be used on other players.

To add to this, I think blips should have a range when not using the Lester feature. They pop up at a certain radius. Additionally, the volume of your vehicles engine can increase that radius.
