Has anyone else successfully lost their wanted level (2 or more stars), only for it to return in sight of police?

I don't know if this has been brought up prior, but this happened to me twice, and i'll try to specify as best as I can.

Sooooo, I was laying low from the heat in the Sandy Shores 24/7 store, (Both times I had a 2-3 star wanted level) and after I (thought) I finally managed to make the wanted level disappear....

BAM! For both instances, I was in the sight of the remaining officers who hadn't left the scene yet, but when I walked out the door, the wanted rating returned to the number of stars it was at before in a matter of at least 10 seconds after disappearing, and I was gunned down & wasted before I could say "what the absolute heck just happened".

Is this a common occurrence for anyone else that's even been brought up yet?

My guess is that when you leave the store the game somehow recognizes this as a robbery. Hence, a new wanted level appears soon afterwards.

Maybe you bumped, or walked too close to the cops? They can get aggressive if you do that.

Didn't bump them, they were all outside in the street, I was just leaving said building, I think as an above post stated it may be due to the already weird game programming re-recognizing the situation as a robbery.

Never experienced that but i have noticed sometimes the cops will appear on the minimap in a place you cant avoid them, when your being chased, but then just before im about to shout wtf and punch the tv they will just disappear soon after, almost like the game knows its being a dick by putting them there and despawns them before i run into them.

Also if you on the freeway, and the cops are ahead of you travelling the same direction, if you drive real slow they keep on driving, and you can lose them, but if you turn round then they will turn round also

I respawned as T.P. at a certain hospital and didnt hit any buttons and was killed by the police approx. 13 minutes later...lots of action that night. But the game has a mind of its own. Police will star you up for disobeying orders as it seems. I was shocked being killed by these police after a totally stagnant respawn.

How did you lose your wanted level in a 24-7? The cops bust right in and start shooting

I believe this is the case, would be pretty easy to check. Rob store, dial 1-999-LawyerUp and then leave.

I usually only get a two star if I kill the store clerk though. Otherwise just a 1 star

I have also myself experienced both of these things. On constant occasions I have lost the wanted level for good right at the point I thought I needed to take the highest amount of action, and I have also evaded many one-star levels by letting the cop cars pass by me and I seamlessly lost the wanted level within a minute or 2.

Y'know, something similar happened to me several times too. I had died in a police rage, respawned (also as Trevor) at the SS hospital, and there were cops outside who gunned me down for no reason at all. At one point it actually got so bad and repetitive that my best bet was to skillfully escape and get the hell out of dodge and I was pretty much safe afterwards.

The way I lose my wanted level (most of the time) is go in the way back of the store, the personnel area, there is an exit door, and next to it a stack of white container crates, and I crouch behind there, typically this only works if there is no blatant criminal evidence (eg: the clerk is not obviously dead and bleeding), and you have to position yourself wisely, otherwise the cops will in fact find you one way or another.

I parked a car across the door, so when i got out i was inside the shop and nobody could get in or out, then killed the shop owner and a customer, got a wanted level, hid in the back of the shop for about 20 minutes and couldnt lose my wanted level.

ended up just having a shootout until i had 5 star wanted level and noose outside, they were throwing smoke grenades at the shop and choking themselves to death with them

Never question the LSPD. They are all robocops. Somehow they found me hiding 40 feet away from the road behind a dumpster behind a building. I get away and drive up to the top of a mountain (not that big, big enough for a Declasse Tornado to make it up there) just for them to walk up the mountain and find me there too. Also what is total sh*t is if you happen to get a 1 star wanted level when there is an air support helicopter patrolling the area, that helicopter can and will lock onto you. For one star. Then all of a sudden you have like 5 police cars flanking you.

Oh and when you accidentally bump into a firefighter and the whole fire department comes after you to beat you up, don't call a police officer to come get them arrested. They wasted me right in front of a cop and he did absolutely nothing.

I can confirm what DigitalBolognese said: I discovered late in my play-through that, because of the vision cone mechanic, cops can not see anything behind them. When they walk, they turn their heads somewhat, and walk in different directions, but when driving their heads remain facing forward. And anyone who has been in a car in San Andreas knows that the mirrors are worthless.

So, all one has to do is follow a cop on the highway--the fact that there is a cop near you means that no others will spawn in, and you need only "ride out" the time.

This is an example of a game mechanic that works--as long as the player assumes that the rules of the game are the same as those of reality. Like Neo, one needs only realize there is no spoon.

(Wait a minute...perhaps that's why cops seem to spawn in out of nowhere...)

cop cars can see behind them if you are closer than 2 lenghts of regular sized sedan plus even if you stay in right distance just before you about to "drive it out" you get cop spawning in opposite traffic and you start all the running right from square 1.

@ACM-Jan

I will edit my post. I actually had never tried to tailgate a cop--I just assumed that it would work, but apparently, there is special code in addition to the vision code that causes cops to react to it. I was wrong to post something based on an assumption.

Are you sure though that cops spawn in the opposite lane on the highways when a cop is ahead of your car?

I may have not said how they get into opposite traffic in detail.

if you are on highway with wide and separated with barrier from opposite direction then you might get lucky and police keeps riding in front of you but you have to keep away from it several car lenghts.

If there is still time left on cop timer and highway lanes get connected up then police infront of you or next one spawning infront of them will turn back towards you via the highway connection and always will do that as you approach them while in vision cone mode on every road where is no barries between opposite and your traffic lane. BUT they may spawn in opposite lane as well sometimes.

EDIT: here is video showing you exactly how cops work currently in gta 5 :

That happens because they still know where you are, even when in "cone vision mode", in fact, they always know where you are and spawn a cop car on the nearest road available to search for you.

The reason why they don't do that when a highway is separated by two barriers is because there is no room to make a U-turn.

Certainly testing makes sense, but alas, I do not have GTA V installed, and won't until it's time for my second play-through.

Yes, I did. There's a trick that might be some of yous haven't founded yet. You go off road, park your car inside bushes, and get rid any cops and police helicopter, and reenter your car that was parked in the bushes, then you and your car will be in "perfectly hidden" mode as if you have changed your car. Make sure no cops were watching you entering the car. I don't know if it's some kind of glitch or what, but it worked. Try it...
