Why Is This Game Going Away From What Made It Work?

Yellow Dog with Cone

Rockstar are a business, the sole purpose of businesses are to make money for their owners/shareholders/investors/whatever, that is their core responsibility. It makes perfect business sense to cater for the demographic that will bring in the most profit and as gaming has evolved from 'buy once' standalone to online multiplayer to recurring spend online multiplayer so businesses evolve to take advantage of where the money is going to come from. Of course R* are going to follow the money which is not where the original fan base was who want to buy a game and not spend anything else on it, anyone having any other expectation is naiive in the extreme or maybe just has no concept of how businesses are supposed to be run. We may not like the way a game that used to be chilled and enjoyable to play has pretty much turned into a warzone environment but that's what brings in the money for the business and that is how the big wide world works at the end of the day.

We already know that R* is a business, we already know that the purpose of a business is to make money, we already know that turning the game into a warzone makes business sense, believe me, we have already listened those excuses hundreds of times.

And if you don't believe me, see most of the replies in posts like these: http://gtaforums.com/topic/899686-take-two-plans-to-only-release-games-with-recurrent-consumer-spending-hooks/page-1

Just because turning what used to be the benchmark of single player sandbox experience into a microtransaction ridden, griefing infested hellhole of money sinks and overpriced, overpowered items; makes "sense" in a business point, that doesn't make it okay.

Seeing a once beloved franchise turned into a $60 mobile game-like cashgrab for profits and turning your back to the fans that put you in the position that you're currently, it's just not okay, it feels wrong, it feels like betrayal, as stupid as it sounds.

And that's what people try to express here, people are tired of seeing the game's identity getting replaced in favor on what appeals to a wider demographic in the name of money. Who cares about good storytelling, world building and great gameplay when most people only care about making things boom within the safety of their jets, tanks and flying bikes?

This game turned into what used to mock, and no, I don't eat that "it's a business and business want to make money" excuse.

The game is still extremely popular and profitable the title should be called why is the game going away from what I like.

In my opinion. I still enjoy freemode chaos and they keep ramping it up.

Which I enjoy.

It is a big departure. Far better imo. I prefer online and all the chaos and customization.

"My experience with the game is still good and so every else's"

You don't speak for the majority, your experience isn't even the same as the majority because you actually glitched your money to fuel your griefing ways that R* is so adamant to promote for profit.

You can't seem to understand or emphatize with people who are tired with the game's development because why would you? You only care about killing players left and right while feeling like a "badass" (even when you're actually one of R* pawns) and the game panders to your needs, f*ck what other players think right? The game is "still good" bla bla bla, WE ALREADY GET IT.

Why the hell did they turn GtaO into a crappy call of duty rip off? I know the obvious answer is greed but there's more to it. This feels like a nasty harbinger of things to come. I want no part of endless pvp and forced sales with Ritalin added tweens in full public lobbies. Is it because they lack creative vision without the benz?

I've been a loyal customer for a along time and even played the hell outta IV online but they're kind of pushing me off the train now. The game was not supposed to turn into this.

I've been raging about this since R* made GTAO live over 3 years ago. Sadly, it's taken most of the fan base this long to realize this.

Unfortunately, cash is king. The moment R* and their investors realized the BILLIONS IN ONE WEEK that could make with the GTA franchise, the soul of this franchise died. The overwhelmingly positive fan base reaction to each release of superficial DLC, continues substantiate investor speculation. The fact the fan base doesn't care about the quality of game mechanics (given all the bugs R* IT can't be bothered to fix or are incapable of fixing). The fact the fan base only cares about getting new shinny WMD toys to have a CoD online experience with. Fan boy enthusiasm for past DLC (and now this latest one) has proven to investors that the GTA franchise should be designed to be a cash cow/golden goose--instead of the addicting, high quality level game mechanics the franchise became so famous for.

It also now appears R* (pushed by Titty Two) has finally stopped mincing its way along that slippery slope of micro transactions. Now it appears both R* and Titty Two have taken the plunge into the abyss. The same path to oblivion which the Exceptional Assholes have made a very well traveled road in the gaming industry. The only good news is R* hasn't cannibalized any Indie software devs the way the EABorg did on its way to hell....

Rest assured when I say this is just the beginning. You're seeing the tip of the iceberg. Mark my words when I say R*/Titty Two will be GTA 6 a 100% micro purchase online experience. And lock all the DLC behind a $$$$$ pay wall aka making you PAY for ALL of new content. At which point, the dumbest of the fan boys will take grinding to the next level.

The SP game for GTA is dead IMO. And R* can't even keep their servers running as of late. I hate to think what the online version of GTA 6 will be like performance-wise in the future.....

I personally love the direction. I get new toys to play with and ramp up my experience, and my friends all join in on the fun. Yea, back in the day I modded, and advocate glitching cash, but it is all so everyone can have fun, not just hardcore grinders or people who buy shark cards. I am not a PvPer, so my enjoyment comes from helping others make money, building custom cars, and expanding my collections of assets and photography. The more toys I have, the more I have fun. I thank them for all of the updates they have given us over the last 4 years. It is a game I can consistently return to time and time again.

But that's the point really - all this hyper expensive content is great fun for glitchers, not so much for the rest of the community who play legit and have multiple paywalls to get through, either needing months of grind or $100's of Shark Cards to access. Rockstar's current pricing model and requirement of one purchase to access the next punishes legit players by making things very hard to get while rewarding glitchers who now get more powerful weapons and vehicles from the off. A $500k-$750 Orbital strike can be dumped on people for fun when money is no object, when you "work for it" that's a week of grinding missions for most. It's a griefing model for cheaters.

All the new overpowered toys they keep adding in each update are fun... from a single player perspective. It's all very amusing running around the map wreaking havoc and chaos but it loses its luster when said toys start chasing your ass instead.

Take for example a game like The Sims. Everybody loves torturing theirs, drowning them in pools or filling their house with ovens, but what if somebody else came along and walled your sim or took the ladder out of your pool. You'd probably be f*cking pissed and understandably.

The tools they give us are very useful and fun from a Human vs Computer context. The AI won't throw a fit and send a controller out the window because it got killed by a homing missle. But when it's PvP, and half of those Ps don't have the money to afford any of this crap anyway, now you've got a problem.

I don't even want to imagine what new players coming to the game in the state that it is now experience. Solo lobbies or nothing. When I started in October 2013, the worst thing I had to worry about was getting run over or pistoled to death. Now, motherf*ckers don't even have to step outside their safezones to murder me.

It's a really bad business decision from R*'s part. You're annihilating so many potential customers by making your game only somewhat enjoyable if:

A) You're rich.

B) You hide in peaceful, closed lobbies.

It's not like most of these gamers will shell out thousands of dollars of shark cards to get even, they don't know yet how good or bad the game is, they barely experienced it and all they see is militarized bullsh*t and griefing. I hope they turn off the console immediately, for their sake.

Right on point.

C* has literally turned every single public lobby into a BS lobby. After seeing how The Prick aka MrBossFTW and his bronies were cyber nuking innocent players around the map, I decided to do the heists only from Invite Only. Being trolled by the likes of that POS loser isn't worth the headache.

Completed Act II yesterday. Since playing with randoms, will miss out on the criminal mastermind. But lucky enough to play with some decent randoms who were dedicated to professionally beating the mission. So nobody died in the final and I maxed the score for first time heist, loyalty, no deaths etc etc. Was just me and the Heist leader and he was mature enough to split it 50%. Was a lot of work (defending with the Avenger while he secured the sub). But it was worth it. And we did all the prep & setup missions together. So I had a terrific payout the first time through and it was 100% worth it. Heist experiences like that are fast becoming extinct in this game. When I complete Act III, I'm pretty much done with playing in any of the public lobbies for a long time again.

Because this new DLC heist will get old over the next 4 weeks or so. You'll know we're at that point where the new shiny toy effect has worn off. Right when you see ppl posting youtube videos on how to glitch the heists. And then when you have POS gamers the likes of MrBossFTW doing these heists with his cheating ass money glitching/card sharking brony crew, it really deducts from all the hard work players like me put into the game.

And to add insult to injury, this clown started to randomly select and blowup players with his orbital canon on the map. Simply because his glitching ass can afford to ruin ppl online experience. And to really rub the salt in, C* goes right along by allowing goons like him to showcase ways to grief players, cheat & glitch the game. SMH.

After completing Act III, I'm pretty much done with online for a long, long time. Hopefully by then, the PC modders at GTA5mods will have found a way to import this DLC assets into SP.

After looking back at this thread and seeing the "don't play it" argument coming up once again, I'd like to throw in another one of my posts from the Recurrent Consumer Spending Hooks thread.

A lot of these "Rockstar/GTA bashing" threads and complaints are actually made out of love. We all love GTA. We just want the best for the franchise, and to make sure it's going in the right direction. I can draw a parallel with fans of losing sports teams, with incompetent management and sh*tty on-field performance. You always hear such fans complain on how so-and-so coach or general manager needs to be fired. They're saying so because they believe it's what's best for the team, and that it will help said team in the future. What if someone went up to them and told them "Just stop cheering for them" or "There are other teams"? No way would those fans stop rooting for their team if they are true, loyal fans.

Just like those sports fans, we are fans of GTA. We want the best for GTA and its future. Even if other franchises like Saint's Row and Watch Dogs were up to par with GTA, I guarantee many of us would still stick with GTA.

Yes we get it. You're happy as long as C* fills your troth with imbalanced PVP slop. A ton of other games better suited to what you like, but no, you chose this one for some reason.

Money, there's a market full of dumbasses and kids so Rockstar has to satisfy a playerbase that is full of immature sh*ts and little kids.

This makes me worry for the future of GTA since these are the players that are filling the fanbase now and it's scary.

GTA is now GTA: COD MUW (Modern Urban Warfare)

GTA is not GTA anymore. Just another Urban Military shooter with sprinkles of co-op here and there. Main focus being on PvP just like any BF or COD game.

It has lost it's identity for sure imo.

Really if you're wondering what to consider GTA now a-days. It truly is Fast and Furious Online. Its a living world of FnF stunts, cliches, and plot lines along with plenty of Michael Bay explosions of course. Its been one hell of a ride. The way R* look at it since its not a single player narrative anything goes.

.....and yet as a devout fan of football, I still entertain the satanic desire to tar and feather Colin Kaepernick's upper 2%, grossly overpaid multi-million dollar incompetent @$$......

Yes, there are bad actors in every franchise. And those of us who abide by the rules shouldn't be tolerating them out of fan base loyalty to said franchise. :miranda:

New players, thanks to the reduction in VIP requirements, don't really struggle much at all. You can do VIP privately. You only need 50k to start a VIP. Once started, thats at least 20k every 10 minutes solely with sightseer, and is risk free. The first heist is super simple, and with some generous people you can net more than 100k in profits for about 30 minutes of your time. Hell my friends and I just helped 2 newbies make their first million in 2 days. They now own offices, and are working towards buying a facility and the necessary tools to make money with.

First million? Well I hope you enjoy that jacket and middle-of-the-pack sports car - you've earned it!

Yea, they did earn it. And they are continuing to enjoy the game more now that they have some stuff they wanted. Since I posted that, one has even grinded their way to the 30m bank mark, and has begun to buy whatever his heart desires. A little help goes a long way, sometimes.

You posted that two days ago. You're saying one of those guys made 1 million dollars in 2 days, and then 29 million more in 2 days? That's not called grinding, it's glitching.

I used to be all about the grind in this game. I never, ever made 29 mil in 2 days, or even in 2 weeks. That's like 120-150 hours of playing time. And you know how much "whatever your heart desires" that 30 mil will get you? Maybe half of the content in the last DLC alone.

you can grind the sh*t out of heists and make millions pretty quickly, especially finale-hopping with a really good crew. It isn't difficult at all to make a lot of money quickly if you put in the time and effort. Which he did, since his school holiday began.

As a collector's edition preorderee, I put in 3000 hours from 2013 into early 2016... I had taken a few breaks from playing, months here and there, multiple months at a time.. I had set a goal, Rank 500, 2.0+KDR, 100M+ earned...

I joined a crew during Valentine's Massacre 2014... I went from rank 21 to reaching rank 100 by March 3rd 2014... The rank & money came fast with Rooftop Rumble... over the next year I took over leadership of the crew and expanded it across 3 other sub-crews.. handpicking each of the 150-200 some odd players I brought into the crews... by the time heists were released there was a solid rotation of around 20-30 core players among the crew that would play together..heists, missions, deathmatches, races, golf, tennis, free roam wars.... i was able to complete CM Challenge within the 1st month of heists with 2 other elite players & a brand new first time gta player ranked like 9.. everything was good, everybody was having a great time.... then ill gotten gains was announced.. we were hyped for the new gear....

so the majority of this core group of players we all had the new ill gotten gains stuff on day 1.... except the stupid items like gold jets and gold choppers.. we'd blow them up and taunt them with how their 10 million dollar jet just got blown tf up by our 2000 rockets.. anyway during the hype of ill gotten gains,, everybody started backing off gta.. we were on 360... so then when lowriders & everything else came out.... most folks kinda backed down. i quit the game...
bought a X1 dec 31st that year... was excited.. bought a lowrider.

hooked up with some dudes, did some pacific standard heists.. bought a yacht, bought some other sh*t... over time bought an office, bought a warehouse, bought a mc clubhouse, a couple businesses... though it wasn't keeping my interest.. in fact, it had gotten quite boring and stale..

go get this crate, go do this blahblahblah... by the time everyone else came on board X1, i was bored of the game.. so we get back into playing before bunker update...the handful of us from the old crew days that remain intact, we went at it hard.. we're doing the same old heists, we're selling cocaine and stealing cars, we're even going back into free roam wars and it's all the same as the old days with a few more things added in... then the bunker update..

i bought a bunker... then i bought a MOC.. then as i realized everything else..... with the labs & gunrunning &the different vehicles and everything else....

i was over GTA completely.. the whole time i had been playing, I have always been hardcore against explosives & military vehicles in terms of pvp combat & deathmatches.. I even kicked a dude out the crew for using an rpg during a war.. Everybody had to be skilled on feet with ballistics.... i always wanted and spoke about how I wanted R* to remove the military vehicles like tanks & jets, get rid of or limit immensely the amount of rockets & grenades, etc... that we are allowed to carry on our person.. they did the opposite of this and have continued doing the opposite.. My weapon of choice was always the Heavy Sniper.. I never came across anyone in my playing time who could stand with me when it came to the heavy sniper.. im not talking about the standing 50 feet away and running in zig zags trying to shoot eachother, but actual skill with the weapon...I have more player kills with the Heavy than any other weapon.. well with gunrunning they added explosive ammo and everything else... Now, I understand most people with the try hard mindset...but I don't want easier, I want harder.. It's real easy to jump in some military combat vehicle and murder the townspeople, it's real easy for myself to add crutches on weapons & etc that i am already experienced & skilled with and kill even more people..

this isn't the direction i wanted.

I had already well surpassed my 100M goal by more than double in 2015, I was already over rank 500 and I was close to 2.0 kdr, so I got my kdr to 2.02 & uninstalled the game.

All I ever wanted in GTA was less explosives, less military vehcles, more realism, a Kriss Vector & an apartment in or around the templar towers buildings..

I wasn't a fan of supercars.. I preferred the Stratum & the 4dr Sultan.. i preferred my richard's majestic apartment 51... and you know what else.. I liked playing Pickup Sticks.

GTA Online as it has become is not the game for me, I have no care in the world to purchase a hanger or a doomsday layer thing, If they ever allow the option to sell all that bs, I will go on and sell my bunker, moc & mc businesses.. I kind of like the office and the 60 car garage i have there, so i'd keep that..

since gunrunning, I reinstalled to go online & get the 400k for signing into online.. then I just reinstalled last week when an old friend finally upgraded to X1... I did the treasure hunt which was cool & enjoyable.. plugged 50 AI in the dome & got my 250k.. bought a Yosemite & signed out.. it may be popular, but GTA is trash compared to what it was.. I'll keep it installed until the new year.. hopefully I get an opportunity to play in the snow by myself in an invite session, though looks unlikely as I'll be away from the 23rd on into the week..

I've turned my gaming attention elsewhere. With the direction GTA Online has taken combined with R*'s general f**kery in terms of business with GTA V... as a person who has been playing GTA since a kid, from the birdseye to 3 & Vice City.... I won't be buying another GTA...

GTA as a game & a franchise... no longer has a soul.

I "put in the time and effort" for almost 4 years, man. I've run the Pac Standard heist in its entirety hundreds of times, I've exported hundreds of high-end cars, daisy-chained Rooftop Rumble hundreds of times. I can't help but roll my eyes when I read posts like this because nothing about making money in this game is easy (unless you take advantage of glitches and exploits). It's MECHANICALLY easy, in that you can clear 200K+ per hour without fail if you lean on certain activities and know what you're doing. But it's still an interminable grind. Last 4 or 5 DLCs all had price tags of 20-40 mil each if you wanted to buy and play with all the best content in them; at a very good earn rate that's still at least 100 hours of grinding if you're lucky.

And it pains me after all this time to see party loyalists still acting like we don't all know what things cost or what the earn rates are like. Without glitches, exploits or shark cards, you are never going to consistently clear more than about 250K an hour at your most optimal efficiency; it is just not possible. You can circle-jerk Pac Standard but the setups take a while and don't pay much. With a good crew you can rotate but setups still have to be done. You can finale-hop with randoms but then it takes longer to do the finales, and it's consistently harder to get in one and get it done. You can glitch and replay the finale (I assume that's still possible), but that doesn't count; if you're going to do that you may as well just dupe cars. No, an average player playing straight up is stuck with that number - and most will actually earn less than that, not more. So if you then want to know how many hours you have to put in to buy what you want to buy while playing the game the way Rockstar intended, all you have to do is add up the price tags... and try not to burst a blood vessel doing it.
