The Tick (2017) on Amazon

Destiny is on the line! Accept the charges.

The salve for your big blue burning itch is here. The Tick is now streaming on Amazon Prime Video. Based on the over the top superhero comic, I grew up on the cartoon in the 90s. So I was excited for a less sitcom TV show, which kind of turned me off of the first live action show. This new show is more comic book-y, and had more action, and broader scope.

I've only watched two and a half episodes, but it's pretty good so far. Fun and funny with the perfect balance of camp and sincerity.

Here's a trailer...

Not completely on topic, but the 90's cartoon still holds up really good, i found it more funny now than i did as a kid.

Yeah, it's one of those shows that the network wanted to make for kids, but the creators just wanted to adapt the comics. Which were more targeted toward adults.

I think 90s cartoons were made in this perfect time where there was no "Adult Swim" or any real outlet for adult demographic targeted animation in the US. So to make those shows, they had to go to Saturday morning network TV, or Nickelodeon, or later to Cartoon Network (before Adult Swim). So there was a fight between the creatives to make great adult driven content, and the networks to keep it relatable to children. So we got these shows that had seeds of genuinely funny double entendres, and big breasts, and butt cracks, but they were vague, and kids could understand the joke in a different way.

And, at least for me, that shaped my sense of humor. I love a really vague double entendre. One where the people around me look at me and wonder if I meant what they think I meant, and I play it straight faced.

Not sure if that's still going on in cartoons these days.

I feel bad for the Tick because the animated version was pretty unique and original.

it was a cartoon the way Duckman: Private Dick was a cartoon. if anyone remembers Duckman...

this live action angle would be fine if it weren't coming out today.

the timing is terrible. because now it's just sort of drowned in a sea of over saturation along with the other 150 different super-hero-comic-book-adaptions that have flooded all channels of distribution.

You know, i saw some episodes, and other than the Tick's revealing costume, i can't remember anything too spicy for a cartoon.

The humor however, is pretty peculiar for a kids show, not racy or outrageous, but deliciously ridiculous. An interdimensional being complaining about his roommate or a parody of the Punisher who's riddled with PSTD is something that adults would find more funny than the actual intended target, series is chockfull of these ridiculous nuggets that kids might take for granted.

Man, I loved the original live action adaptation with Patrick Warburton. It was perfect.

How does this compare with that?

It's a different animal.

That was more of a sitcom where this is more like the cartoon, but with more violence and bad language.
