Sports Activities Discussion

As we all know (or most of us), GTA Online is over three years old and since then has gone through some hectic changes. From poor ol' beach bums to criminal masterminds to crazy stunt drivers to multimillion dollar gunrunners. Now, you've probably gathered what this thread is about simply by looking at the title. One thing that never really took off or got much attention were sports activities. GTA Online currently has Tennis and Golf as its two major sporting activities; I suppose you could add darts to seeing as some consider it a sport.

However the main focus here is Tennis and Golf. Why are they hardly played? Its very simple and here are a few factors.

1. Time: Tennis matches and games of Golf aren't just five minute wonders. Tennis alone can take a good 15 to 20 minutes to complete a single set (6 games) which is the minimum. Golf of course depends on the amount of players and the amount of holes.

2. Rewards: Golf has a reasonable 3000RP reward after completing all 9 holes (solo), however you're looking at a good 20 minutes or up to at least an hour with 4 players, making it nowhere near worth the time. Tennis' RP increases gradually depending on the amount of sets played. But generally 1 set consisting of 6 games takes on average 15 to 20 minutes and rewards the winner with just over 1000RP and no cash reward unless bets are placed.

3. Quitters: Players who know they aren't going to win won't bother hanging around for the next 3 sets, so they quit; logically. However the player who was winning gets nothing. Basically time has been wasted and nothing has been achieved.

We all know the obvious answer would be to increase payouts (or at least add a cash payout without having to bet), however for some that may not be enough to convince them to play.

So, the idea of this is to get the communitys' thoughts on sporting activities in GTA Online and how they could be improved to make you play them more often.

Also added a small poll regarding the subject.

- Tennis can be played quicker. I forgot to mention that the minimum is 1 Game which can take around 3 minutes, not 1 set.

- If a player leaves mid-game, although you get kicked back into freemode, it will count as a win on your side. This pretty much applies to all (or most) jobs in GTA Online. Edited August 17, 2017 by REXX

Darts and Golf are usually my go-to sport activities, (Golf being my favorite of the two) but I never really have the time to do them, since I have other ways of getting money and RP. I usually only play these when I've got nothing else to do, but even then, as you stated, the RP is simply not worth it. If they added a reasonable $$$ payout for them, then I'd play them more often.

 

 

So $$$ and increased payout is definitely what the sport activities need. Maybe add some new ones while they're at it. It seems unlikely at this point however.

Sometimes I do. As said though, they aren't terribly rewarding.

 

GTAO needs more sporting activities to do. I have advocated for a long time now in the "DLC Ideas Wishlist" forums that I would love a "Sports and Other Pastimes" type DLC. In fact, after Gunrunning I think it would provide a much needed breath of fresh air.

 

Some activities I would like to see:

 

Triathlons - including create-a-triathlon

 

Running races - including create-a-race. I think that the creator community would be able to make some great rooftop parkour type races. With some new props and animations such as ladders, monkey bars, zip lines etc, there could be some excellent assault courses. With things like Tough Mudder (even parodied in game on the radio) being very popular, I think this could be a laugh

 

Wingsuit flying and formation skydiving activities

 

Diving activities - with proper SCUBA gear instead of just rebreathers

 

Motorised parasailing

I love to play golf and darts - almost one round each time I'm online. Still running for the hole-in-one. Met some pretty nice randoms there (I always host) and made some friends, too. Best darters are the Netherlands and Irish people so far I met. I don't see much room for improvement for darts, but for golf. The zoom is sometimes f*cked, f.e. . I wish they would add a new course somewhere in the "unused" dessert part of Sandy Shores will have enough room for that. What's more? R* add a minigolf course

I never played darts competetive in real life, but in game it was a bit confusing for me at the beginning. But i found it the most fun "sports" to play in Online.

We'll occasionally play 9 holes of golf, but just one course gets boring. There's a couple spots on the map big enough for new country clubs. A mini golf in Paleto Bay would be sweet.

 

Also, isn't arm wrestling in online?

Golf is suprisingly fun and pretty deep. I used to play it regularly with a guy I met during a Survival match. Ah, the good ol' times.

I just wish they added some more sports to the game, something like pool à la GTA 4 or basketball à la San Andreas.

I play darts to kill time in the clubhouse every now and again, but i would have prefered a basketball mini based around HORSE, or even air hockey. I don't play golf or tennis often, but when I do i actually really enjoy it. Pretty well made mini games TBF.

maaaaan such and untapped part of the gta world imo, we even have a small grass football (soccer) field...we have gyms, skateparks, a lovely map, race tracks (University) etc so many minigames could/should be added...even bowling!

 

why not a triathlon adversary mode? how comes there are no extreme sports? wingsuit gliding or something? R* put a skateboard to use in their game Bully (canis cadem edit) so it can be done, not asking for tony hawks but an ollie and grind, (maybe one flip and one grab)

 

san andreas had b-ball, we could have air hockey, pool, the list goes on...fight club anyone? fishing? hunting? volley ball at the beach? surfing? lowrider comps, blackjack, 21, poker?

 

There should be a sports & activities DLC...with like Hockey stick as a new melee weapon....and a whole load of sport clothing, pro laps etc bball jerseys, shorts, shoes, headbands, tennis tops, hockey, football jerseys, helmets....

I play tennis here and there with a friend when we're bored, and I'm astounded at how SOLID its gameplay actually is.

 

I'm definitely seconding the hockey wish(es). Hell, why not a Rollerball-esque AM?

Yes, I had presented a similar topic a while back, Health & Fitness in GTAO, that raised some of the topics.

I think it's an aspect to the game that was introduced for more of the nostalgic players and to keep the GTA critics at bay by saying, "it's not all violence... we have golf!"

But it's true, @LL Cool L is right - it's an untapped source of competitive modes in GTAO that could yield some serious interest if developed and arranged properly.

All these Adversary Modes are fine, but they are more or less the same old same old, and I rarely go near them anymore.

Imagine if they introduced a 1-on-1 Basketball tournament? There's a ton of courts all over Los Santos that we can't even touch.
Same with Table Tennis/aka Ping Pong.

The skate parks are barren and could be amazing if there were an event where you could be rated on your stunts.
Even pickup the Weightlifting code from GTA: San Andreas... the area is already in place at the beach.

So, yeah, I'm all for more of this and expanding possibilities with the game. I just don't actually see it happening. <sigh>

Nah.. they added all the stuff I didn't wanna play. But if they ever added skateboarding, basketball, surfing, or table tennis (fpv).. I'll be all over it.

Yea i'd be all over any sports too, especially sports that can also be used as transport and stunting i.e. skateboarding, inline, bmx (with pegs!), surfing, wingsuits, jetman wings, snowboarding & skiing at xmas, and many many more.

 

I'm too brittle to stunt irl at my age and imo the physics in GTAO are good enough to make some awesome sports updates. I'm actually quite surprised it hasn't happened yet since there's ingame commercials for extreme sports, it's such a tease everytime i hear that commercial mentioning winsuits! (Is it Egochaser? Can't remember).

 

Edit: Answering the poll wasn't easy for me. I don't really consider those "sports" they're more like games imo. And the last question I'd answer "the current ones are fine but they should add more sports". That's how I really feel.

LL, i would totally f*cks with a triathlon. Especially if they made it a job set in it's own session like missions/parachuting/races. Imagine a 30 player triathlon...lol would get old fast probably, but there would definitely be that button mashing frenzy like ring fist fights. I'd like to think triathlon would be a little more engrossing than those edge fests though.

 

Also, lots of people have asked for this, and by extension nightclubs, but dancing or clubbing. Another TBoGT staple would be cage fights, but with PVP and betting like with races but with larger bets preferably.

 

Anything from SA revamped for GTAO would be nice really.

Sometimes I do play sports on the game online. My favorite sport would have to be tennis that I love to play against my friends and sometimes randoms. It's such a rush and it's so much fun.

 

I do wish they would let us play basketball at their courts and let us use that stadium for some extreme sports play.

My first garage was next to a half pipe. Are those just for looks, or can you actually use the bmx on them?

 

PS The Insurgent is not a viable freestyle vehicle. Although I got a lot of looks trying to use mine as one on that ramp.

BMX totally work on them, bunny hop when you crest the lip of the half pipe and 180 to land and repeat. Can get some pretty decent air too!

I sucked back then but it's not hard to do flips and rodeos with a little practice.

In my early life in GTA I played golf every night. It was a good way to get strength up and was kind of fun too. It was also a good way to unwind after a long session. Now I hardly ever play it and rarely see invites for it.

you probably know this but just in case anyone doesn't know, you can guick join activities from your phone and be placed on-call in the next avaliable activity. Generally there's someone somewhere hosting one so I find that the fastest way to join any job with randoms.

I only play activities with friends though, I bet if there were more activities we'd play them too. Seems like we play them when we just happen to be near one so it would nice if they added more sports to add icons for those activities on the minimap (like skateparks, that's one icon I would never hide).

I don't tend to play them all that often but I do quite enjoy the sporting activities every now and then for a change. Darts is probably my favourite with arm wrestling being the worst for me as I'm always worried I'm going to damage my control pad on the rare occasion I've played that.

 

I think as people have already said Rockstar need to increase the money rewards for playing them or at least the RP to entice more players in. I also think these activities should make a return to the daily objectives. All they need to do to make that viable is ensure the objective still gets ticked off the list if your opponent quits (in the case of Tennis). Another thing I'd like to see added to the sports is some sort of reward for recording a certain number of wins. So for example say if you won 25 darts matches then you could unlock a dart board in different colours to the traditional ones (perhaps your crew logo in the background as we see with the phone) which you can place in one of your apartments, yacht or office etc.

Sport is one of the key pastimes of mankind, played and enjoyed every day by almost everyone around the world. Not war and killing, which is reserved for armies and certain groups, and yet it's war and killing that prevails in GTA online.

Sport is competitive and non-combative, but people don't really play it in GTA online. Like the recent-ish advervary mode, Overtime Rumble - it was really popular during 2x payouts, but why?

 

2 X PAYOUTS.

 

Current sporting activities pay a gigantic ZERO, and money is what drives the GTA online forward.

So yes please, more sports... but only if we get paid decently for them.

Quick job on all activites except golf is a miracle, if someone quits in tennis, at least in tennis, it counts as a win. Someone quits before their last putt saves their record and no win for the other player. Maddening...Out of the all platinum awards, the hole in one was the hardest, but I finally got it. 5 sets tennis got it before I got 25 wins, but people quitting in set 3, have a special place in hell.

yea sports are fun. but i rarely play them now. back when the game was newer i played them often. i had some friends that played golf everyday. but nowadays it is hardly ever played. i do wish they would add more sports. like basketall bowling air hockey ping pong and more. and certainly increase payouts and better rewards for them. give us more incentive to play them.
