No point in this being a poll-only thread, discussion helps. :) Reverted.

Red Dead Redemption and it's open world is IMO the best they've ever done. As an open world game GTA IV for me lacked soul and character. It's a technical marvel of a game, but the city is lifeless. It's carried by an amazing physics system but beyond that there's no life to it. V fixes many of the problems I had but for me it's far too dependent on the mechanics and tools you have at your disposal to the point where the game world takes a back seat. The stuff is there in V, but you're basically encouraged to play like you're on cocaine 24/7 so you never go see it.

But RDR? RDR is slow, you move the world at speed where you are constantly taking in your environment. There's a functioning day/night cycle, shops open and close, the bar comes to life, etc. Out in the wild you wander keeping one eye and ear on the environment incase a snake or coyote creeps up on you. There's small, random events that feel completely natural happening as you explore and there's treasure to find, bounties to collect, poker and other games you actually want to play and plenty of other things to out in the world to do. For me, it was Rockstar's last open world game where the world takes centre stage and when an open world game does that it usually ends up being special.

Algonquin Assassin

GTA IV. It's still never been topped for detail, immersion and feeling like a real place. Best physics, story, protagonist, missions, side missions and I could go on and on, but that would be a pretty long essay.:p

^ Yeah, I think we all agree that GTA IV was groundbreaking/what GTA III was compared to GTA 2. I want this feeling again with GTA 6.

BUT THE BENZ

GTA SA, The Max Payne series, GTA V, Red Dead Redemption, L.A. Noire. my main gaming material since 2001!

I've spent years, in-game, within these worlds they created. I beat all the games multiple times, not a guy to 100 % everything and get all the trophies, but I like the grind in certain areas and aspects.

Thinkin back just now, with GTA SA I had a bizzare connection, because I'd start a new game from scratch, in the hood, whenever I was at a point in my life when I was supposed to go out and get my sh*t right. learn for exams, find a job, further educate, all that noise. I did this GTA SA boomerang thing for at least over a 5-years stretch I think.

*sigh* good times, and San Andreas was the perfect place for escapism. Just like Max Payne 1. I must have spent a year ingame-time on that alone just aswell.

Games, best art ever.
