How would you have preferred your character to start?

Early adopters still remember how terrible GTA Online was on Day 1. But including all that, I also disliked been introduced to Lamar, a crappy street race and a lousy LTS as an introductory tutorial. It was a dull and lackluster intro to GTA Online.

If you scrap the unskippable and annoying tutorial mission from the start, how would your character start out his/her life in San Andreas? If your character didn't arrive by plane, by which means did he arrive to SA? From where? What happened to him as soon as he arrived? How does your character gets contacted by Gerald?

I know what you mean by that, but it doesn't make the intro to the online that much interesting. I mean something like this:

On his way to Los Santos, his plane had to make an emergency landing on the Las Venturas Airport. Getting out of the plane, he made his way to the car park to boost a car to reach Los Santos, but he gets held up at gunpoint by someone. He barely got a glimpse of the guy as he gets smacked on his head, knocking him out unconscious. Next thing he knows he wakes up groggily inside a shed with nothing but his short shorts and a headache. Taking a peek outside, he sees he's at some kind of camp full of naked weirdos.

rcWPrgU.png

He overheard some words like "pretty blonde", "have my way with him" and "machete". He wasn't going to die after going through hell on Liberty City. He dragged himself next to a crate and tried to pull himself to his feet; drugs were starting to wear off. Next to a munition crate he saw a simple pistol. He grabbed it and laid back on the edge of the shed's doorway. Without thinking, he opened fire on the weirdos guarding the door, which alerted everyone on the complex.

After getting shot twice (or several times), he made mince meat of all the weird guys at the camp; only armed with paltry pistols and machetes. The gate was locked, so the only way to get out was to jump off the edge.

He broke his left arm, but it didn't stop him from boosting a beater Emperor to make his way to the city.

Making his way through the madness of the city, he reached some run down motel on Innocence Blvd. down in Rancho. He quickly rented a room and stayed up all night trying to pull out the bullets that didn't go through and trying not to chicken out of bashing his arm into place again. "Welcome to San Andreas." He grunted as his left arm finally clicked into place. "Now to get some pants."

You actually can skip the tutorial though.

Did that with my second character - and because I had a bunch of banked money from my first, I bought the cheapest 'student flat' apartment I could find, and a Prairie (because it's the only thing Compacts that has the same body mods as the Sports class - perfect for that 'my first project car' look!). Thought it might be fun to have a character ostensibly from Los Santos, rather than yet another person flying in from outside - so I figured a 'just left (maybe not graduated, exactly!) ULSA, and getting started in a (less-than-legal) job' angle worked well enough.

That, and because a lot of money was coming from my other character, who already had a bunch of stuff like a Buzzard and all that, I just interpreted that a bit more literally - my first character was acting as a mysterious, anonymous benefactor, setting up the newbie with the tools to join the business (because shared organisation bank account). Also explains why Gerald, Lester, etc. were all calling from out of the blue - my first character had already met them doing the tutorial missions, and so was putting them in touch with Character #2. ;)

...I mean, that's obviously not what really happens - skip the tutorial with your second character, and you just get plonked into the game with things happening as you rank up, with zero context. But at the very least, I figured my 'creative reinterpretation' was a logical way of trying to contextualise everything in a more

way. :)

Three days. She'd been on the road for three damn days. Cans of energy drinks littered the back seat of her stolen Fugitive and she wasn't sure if that horrible thumping noise was the left rear tire or her heartbeat after one too many cans of Sprunk. She glanced down from the road at her side, lightly touching the bandage around her abdomen. Yup, still bleeding. Maybe it wasn't such a hot idea to rob that 24-7 back in Halfmast. How was she supposed to know the clerk would call her bluff and guess she was out of ammo? She was just glad all he had was a pistol and not a 12-gauge, like the clerks back in Alderney. She was also glad he was a lousy shot. Maybe even a worse shot than her.

She took a quick glance at her GPS. Her destination wasn't too far. She picked up her phone and dialed a contact.

"This the one and only LD. Who dis?"

"Lamar? It's your friend from Alderney. Remember how I said I might be dropping in sometime soon? Well, it's sometime soon. Should be in town in a couple of hours. I just hit Blaine County," she said, wincing slightly. That thumping noise was getting worse, and now she was pretty sure it wasn't the tire.

"Aight homie. Tell you what, I got some friends might be able to hook you up with some work, yo. My boy get you in on some racing, maybe call G, he hook you up with some stuff to do, aight? Meet me at the Up 'n' Atom on Vinewood Boulevard, I'll get you straight."

She hung up the phone and tried to concentrate on the road. "F*ck me," she thought. "I didn't come this far just to die on the side of the road." She put the hammer down, weaving through traffic. Out of the corner of her eye she spied a Blaine County Sheriff's patrol car, and her heart skipped a beat. The cruiser didn't pull out after her though, and she breathed a ragged sigh of relief. "Guess the cops in this town don't really care about speeding," she thought as she barrelled her way down the freeway, cutting across three lanes to make her exit near Vinewood Boulevard. She flew through intersections with blatant disregard for red lights or cross traffic, arriving at the Up 'n' Atom just moments after Lamar. She threw the door open and stumbled out of the car.

"Yo homegirl, what's crackin'?" asked Lamar as he walked over. "Uh...you don' look so good."

"No sh*t, Sherlock," she spat. She fell to her knees, coughing up blood. She tried to stand, but she was too lightheaded from the loss of blood and fell to the ground, on her back. The last thing she heard before blacking out was Lamar yelling for a medic.

She awoke in a dimly-lit room, lying on a bed with bloodstained sheets. Her side was still covered in bandages, but at least now they were clean. "You awake?" said a voice from across the room. It took her a few moments to focus. It was a man she didn't recognize. "My name's Gerald. I'm with the Families. You're a friend of Lamar's, right?"

"Yeah," she said. "Not sure why I'm friends with the motormouthed son of a bitch, but I am."

"Well that motormouthed son of a bitch saved your ass. Brought you down here. Good thing for him I know a guy. Patched you up," said Gerald.

"I guess I owe you one, don't I?" she asked.

"Damn straight you do," replied Gerald. "You do a couple solids for us, we'll be even. Lamar said you're new to LS. Here." Gerald tossed her a .45-caliber pistol. "You're gonna need it. Go find yourself a whip and some new threads and see me when you're ready. Don't worry. I got somethin' easy for you, start you off right. I ain't about to watch you get smoked after I just paid good money to save your damn life."

I think that would've been better.

You arrive by plane, and the airline loses your luggage, so you go outside the airport.

You walk down the street, and notice a sh*tty car left idiling on the sidewalk. You steal it, but realize that it was a bait car. You get arrested and you meet a crony of Gerald's in the holding tank. You get released on bail thanks to your promise to work for Gerald.

Male character: Would have liked to start by escaping humane labs.

Female character: Would have liked to step out of the airport and be collected by a private driver and taken to her office.

Yep, both based off my characters backstories :p

i have no problem with our intro to gtao, i just wish the game had more of a storyline.

You actually can skip the tutorial though.

now we can but back in the day it was not possible, hence why many of us got stuck on day 1 when the corona that triggered the lamar street race wasnt working.

In a pitch black room......he can hear muffled voices but cant make out what is being said....

suddenly the room around him begins to close and tighten around him....

two giant hands grab his head, twist his body and pull him from the room

He is held and cradled by giants... before having part of his belly cut off.

All we had to do was play the damn tutorial CJ!

I skipped it. Perfect beginning for someone who can only learn the hard way.

However, it would have been cool if I could have started in jail. Then picked a representative of either Lamar, Gerald, LJT, or whoever to start doing missions for.

Graduating top of her class in aviation school. Or on the run from her native country for war crimes like dropping hot sticky bombs on disgusting foreigners and orphanages. Comes to los santos to quickly learn the handling of the P996 Lazer and later thanks to the heist continuation the H27 Hydra. She can't wait to get her hands on a apache and use choppers more.

I'd prefer my character to start as a normal person, just moved to Los Santos, first day of school, you know, the new kid/outcast vibe. Eventually turns to life of crime when he meets the right power players and becomes the next Tony Montana in less than a 11 months.

Your character is in prison. Another prisoner starts a riot and you take advantage. You escape from the jail but you got badly hurt in an explosion, so you go on surgery to change appearance, but you don't have money and obviously you don't want to be recognized. An old friend of yours helps you but needs some work to be done to return the favour. And those couple of missions could be the tutorial.

I actually didn't mind the start of GTA:O. In keeping with GTA tradition you're a newcomer to the city and slowly build yourself up the criminal underworld, taking on jobs that get exceedingly more dangerous and lucrative. It's just a shame that the plot pretty much stops after meeting Madrazo. There are still the heists and such, but that didn't really add much to the overal story. I just like seeing my character (and my friends') in cutscenes interacting with each other, and I wish there was more.

I would have like a mini-storymode where you were brought in as a low-grade hitman as the trainer for how to run and shoot and drive, then you kill your boss and go independent to "graduate". A little more PvNPCs and then gradually introduce Team-v-Team and then true PvP.

My character would be a 18 years old dude who lives alone in a 2-room sh*thole of a hotel in Mission Row, he works in an office at Downtown as a office boy, he runs errands everywhere in the city for his boss and is paid less than minimum wage because his boss is a asshole, but he stays on this job because it's the only thing he knows how to do.

Eventually one day his boss asks him to retrieve a package inside a warehouse in the hood, promising an extra payment on the side, he accepts because extra money is extra money.

He goes inside the warehouse, members from the Families are there waiting for him, they made fun of him because he is nervous and then Gerald shows up and gives him the package.

Turns out, the package was drugs and the police raids the spot right before he could grab the drugs, Gerald and the others fights the cops while my character flees the scene but loses the package in the shootout.

On the other day he gets fired, as the boss doesn't want to deal with fall out from the botched deal coming to him and warns him that he has connections in the police department that could get him jailed if he comes back.

Now, my character is on the street, with only $350 bucks in his bank account, he will be kicked out of his apartment if he doesn't pay rent, he has to make money somehow so he can survive another day, so he goes after Gerald and...

Nothing to his name he would gloriously bludgeon his way to the position he is in now.

One of these eighties movie intro scenes. The cinematic camera following a converible or a sports car with pop-up headlamps driving through the Hollywood Hills, with some newtimer saxophone piece playing while the names of the executive producers appear on the screen one by one.

For the music, I was picturing something like Huey Lewis & The News, Rod Sterward or Steve Miller.
