Grand Theft Auto Online just had its best money-making quarter ever

Expect even more convoluted mess like the gun runner update from now on :/

https://venturebeat.com/2017/08/02/grand-theft-online-just-had-its-best-money-making-quarter-ever/

Grand Theft Auto V has been out for almost four years, but its online component is still Take-Twos big money-maker. In fact, Grand Theft Auto Online just had its best quarter yet.

Take-Two noted today in its earnings report for the first quarter of fiscal year 2018 that Grand Theft Auto Online exceeded net sales expectations and was the single largest contributor to recurrent consumer spending. GTA Online is an open world multiplayer game where you can earn digital cash through playing, which you can then use to buy things likes clothes and cars. But you can also spend real money to pad your virtual wallet.

Grand Theft Auto Online helped to drive Take-Twos net sales for the quarter to $348.3 million, up 28 percent. A whopping 94 percent of that, $326.2 million, came from back catalog games, mostly Grand Theft Auto V and NBA 2K17.

Grand Theft Auto V first came out in 2013, but its still one of the best-selling games in the U.S. every month. While the PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 versions are now outdated, the open-world game attracts a lot of players on PlayStation 4, Xbox One, and PC.

GTA developer Rockstar Games has kept GTA Online relevant with a steady stream of content updates, many adding new vehicles, cosmetic items, and multiplayer game modes.

Just like other entertainment forms, what brings in the most money can often be really sh*tty actually.

At the very least, they can make them for vehicles that are more interesting.

Then again, now that I say that - well, soon there'll be flare dispensers that don't actually let out flares.

lol i think we should just give up on actual dlc..... clothing/maps/new actual good modes not pvp crap.

i sometimes dislike the gta community esp those who fuel things like this.

I smell a single player DLC is on the way. "GTA V and GTA online" yeah that's 2 separate things.

Please, for the love of the great white wolf in the sky, tell me Gunrunning was just R* & T2 trying to get the greed out their system.

Can't wait for the next update: Sharkrunning Part 2

Legend says it will only be available if you buy three shark cards

In all seriousness, this is no big surprise. Gunrunning was clearly made to make jackasses spend money just to get their flying bike

Past updates' content was still "affordable" (with lots of quotation marks) but Gunrunning took it to a whole other level

What shocks me the most is how hypocrytical the community is. Most players complain about shark cards and the lack of money, but in the end they're the first ones to spend real money for a couple of silly vehicles. I could buy three games for the price of three shark cards smh

No wonder we get games like No Man's Sky. Too many deranged kids out there

Oh well, I bet R* is enjoying this...

No surprise there. Yet people will keep playing this game even after all their rants and whining about the greedy nature of GTAO and how grindy it has become.

Hopefully this allows them to do more frequent smaller DLCs. A couple new Benny's cars and a new category of tuner wheels is long over due.

Good, that means a few more YEARS of added content. I've played GTA Online regularly since 2013, and although I've had some periods of boredom where I thought I'd call it quits, in the end I always hang on for the new content. This news means I probably won't even stop playing when the new RDR comes out, as I had initially promised myself. f*ck all the complainers, the last update was great. Nothing is forcing you to buy shark cards to fast-track research or to buy all vehicles at once. And nothing is forcing you to act like whiny bitches or to play at all, either. You know where the door is - GTA is obviously doing extremely well without you!

Single player has been dead since the advent of 2015. Who hasn't achieved 100% at this point? Everyone has moved on to Online years ago. I'm never touching single player again, just as I have never done with any game after attaining 100% completion. GTA Online is where the player base and the potential for revenue is today, which R*/TT have clearly understood. Only a few misfits who never liked playing with/against others are still seriously whining about SP DLC. Get it through your retarded heads that a 4-year old game will never get new SP DLC.

Anyone who thinks R* isnt give players exactly what they are asking for is proven wrong. More adversary modes and op vehicles with lockons in the future. Any on who complained about the jet, a vehicles that only a small % could use, now has to deal with flying bikes, explosive snipers, and armored insurgents full of noobs. I personally love gunrunning and all the additions, but the oppressor is a straight up noob weapon, built for those to impatient to learn how to use the jet. And the more I see it, the more I think it was a huge mistake. The best part is when you bump into one of these oppressor users that doesnt realize the jet is still about 10 times better even with explosive sniper threat.

Good to see the game is still going strong, even if people seem to have had more criticisms about the last update we got than previous ones.

I love it! Time to buy shark cards every week. I love helping billionaires make more billions and when I ask for help to tell me to send 3 hr long videos.

You could say the same thing about that marksman rifle. It was added in because only a minority of people could use the heavy sniper effectively. In a way it was added to "balance" the game. Even the same could be said about the Hydra . It was added in to "balance" the Lazer and look what happened once people started to use it effectively. Rockstar is sh*t when it comes to balancing GTAOnline and they will always add a weapon or vehicle that will be the most OP thing in the entire game until the next big OP thing gets added in with the next update. Their interpretation of "balance" is incredibly flawed. It's clearly evident in the game.

Coincidentally, the first two letters of Oppressor is OP. Which we all know it stands for "Over Powered". From what I observed, this weaponized vehicle is living up to it's name through and through.

Good to see the game is still going strong, even if people seem to have had more criticisms about the last update we got than previous ones.

As someone left COMPLETELY out in the cold by Gunrunning (I grudgingly bought the Cheetah Classic, and that's literally it - got more content and gameplay value out of the friggin' Flight School than this update...), I still reckon that ultimately, the views of long-term GTAO/GTA/R* games fans aren't necessarily representative of the majority of GTAO players.

Bit like how R* made an update themed around Last Team Standing - surprised the heck out of me, since no-one I knew ever bothered with them. But apparently in late 2014, LTS was the most popular game mode with the larger GTAO population - that's probably true of things like adversary modes nowadays, too (hence why R* keeps pumping them out).

At the end of the day, R* will ultimately go with what's popular/profitable overall, and so if big sellers like Import/Export and Gunrunning (and by extension, stuff like the Ruiner 2000 and Oppressor) are what go over well with the average player (like the many folk who just dip in and out of the game when something new gets released), then that's what R* will focus on in future.

Me, I'm giving it until probably the end of the year, and then I'll be putting GTAO on the shelf indefinitely - to be perfectly honest, if the game came out today in this state, and I'd not bought it back pre-SecuroServ and all that, I'd probably not be interested in getting into it. That's no loss to R*, like I said above, but at the same time, if R*'s going one way, and my tastes are firmly pointed in a different direction, there's only so long I can waste my own time waiting for something that's likely to never happen. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

More support means more updates so that's good news to me. Makes me wonder though how anyone at R* & T2 get any work done, with that much money i'd be...
