Is Max Payne 1 good?

Do you remember that feeling, I think we all had it during some point of our lives, when you were introduced to an awesome game for the first time? I wasn't just blown away, I felt drugged, sucked in to a wormhole and spat out in some other dimension. I couldn't get my mind to think about anything else after playing Max Payne for just mere hour or so. Not even the almighty GTA III was such a revelation to me as Max Payne was. My English as a thirteen year old kid was pretty much basic, but Max spoke to me in a language I understood clearly, both literally somehow, as well as figuratively. It was like discovering you spoke some mysterious dead language fluidly all of a sudden.

I don't understand why so many people always rush to say, " it is oudated "? Literally the first thing to come out of their mouths. Why is graphics so important in this particular case? Visually, and don't quote me on that, but I think Max Payne was, if not the very first game, then one of the first, to incorporate "photo-realistic" graphics. Maybe it's my general affection, but I cannot see anything wrong with the graphics even today. It is just like it supposed to be. I won't say it is 'timeless', but I dare to say it is beautiful.

The atmosphere, general tone, narrative, darkness, characters and voice acting, comic-book style, the sound score - good f'cking god - how they nailed it in every single department. It's like a poetry. What amazes me the most is the fact that Remedy was not even a small studio in that time, they were literally non-existent by industry standards and to pull such a masterpiece out of their pockets..man.

The main reason, however, behind Max Payne being a timeless classic, lies in its combat mechanics. That's where its replayability comes from. Nothing from above would be so epic without this particular element. It might not be as advanced as that of Max Payne 3, but amazingly they are in the same category, they've got the same DNA. Notice how the creators paid attention to certain nuances; they didn't want to make us gods with guns - like Rockstar shamefully did with MP2. The slow-mo, the bullet-time, is not the aspect dedicated to make you invincible, but rather to give you the slight edge. Despite the disadvantages of the time it was created in, even the cons of this department cannot be viewed with harsh critics, like enemy placement on the map or their "clean" shots, e.g. You know why? Because, every game has flaws, just like everything else in this universe, but not every game can reverse them into something positive, or make them appear less invalid as it generally thought to be.

I think I could go on for days about Max Payne, but I was too tired to go on..for now.

Here's a piece of some nice action though.

I picked this up on the Playstation store the other day since it was on sale. Truthfully I always to play Max Payne again, but didn't really want to pay $22 for a 19 year old game.

Anyway besides the strange walking controls which I'm getting used to again I'm surprised by how well it's held up. The shooting feels fantastic like a precursor to GTA IV. I'm not sure if anything's done to the PS2 versions of these games graphically on the PS4, but the environmental details still look great. Max's "I'm taking a sh*t" face still makes me laugh, but it's good to be playing a true classic again.:)

But you can pay $9 for Steam version any day. And I don't think it's a good idea to play the action games on consoles that were originally released for PC.

Besides, even if Steam offers $22 for this game I'd still buy it because it's the best [PC] game in in my life: Location, atmosphere, gameplay, story, soundtrack, weapons, difficulties, some Easter Eggs and details, except its outdated graphics, everything else is just fine to me.

Fair point, but I only game on consoles.

Anyway I'm enjoying playing this game again, but I have to admit when enemies get killed their screams are unintentionally hilarious because they just sound so cringey. I'm not sure how to describe it, but it's like bad acting out of a B grade movie with the way they go "OOOOOOAHHHH" lol. Not even GTA III is that bad. The the rest of the game has held up so well except that.

Yeah. Their screams are hilarious especially when they're burning to death.

I played Max Payne for the first time 14 years ago and I still regularly play it with mods, it remains a big pleasure.

Yes. I’d say so at least. All three Max Payne games are good though IMO.

i heard people say that the Xbox version is the better version to play, but I can't really answer if the game is good or not.

Why? Because I didn't get that far in it. :(
