[REL|MP] Max Payne: Restorations Pack

Could be. After all at that time companies kept reusing sounds from each other. Just take a look at the Descent Into Cerberon song by Sonic Mayhem which was used in Quake II. It samples a trance track from GTA1.

There was a church level (not the Ragnarock one!) that is not in the final game, it stayed in the game for quite a while, but it was cut later on, probably during the transition from E3 2000 to E3 2001.

I saw it in the "Special" E3 2000 trailer, here's the video:

https://rutube.ru/video/7f11fbc0799eeb7fcc05ef38d25dc056/

EDIT:

Also, there's a text entry for "Part II, Chapter Six" in the game files, so I guess Max was meant to go to the church after killing Angelo Punchinello and then ran into Nicole Horne?

New BETA stuff found! And it's cool enough to be posted in a different post, so sorry for double post.

I found an amazing video of MP1 E3 2000, PS2 version:

Two noticeable things are that the subtitles appear at 0:35 and the junkie clothes are different (white instead of green), the video's audio is misaligned though.

Aesir HQ level is also shown in one scene, and a large sign of Aesir Corporation can be seen hung high up on the steel wall.

Damn, so many changes! But why Remedy? Why did you cut all of this?

Found this amazing video at: https://assemblergames.com/threads/max-payne-1-dreamcast-pc-beta.59779/page-2.

Cut MP5 appears twice in that PS2 video. As for the church, It could of been a part of Ragnarok map/level or could be separate level related to Jack Lupino, hard to say.

Yeah, it could be Ragna Rock's BETA version, but if one thinks it's the cut "Chapter Six" of Part II, then it can't be related to that since Lupino dies at the end of Part II.

Moreover, I once saw a screenshot where an E3 1998 Max is standing in the possibly same church, equipped with a Sniper Rifle and since the Sniper Rifle is first obtained in Part II, that pushes the level more closer to the fact that it was a Part II level.

Did you know Lupino's original name was Vinniy Gognitti and had a noticeable typo? Meaning the Vinnie Gognitti you chase in the final game had a different name.

More noticeable things in that video are:

* Michelle, Max's wife, makes a different scream, the sound file still exists, it was probably cut because it's too disturbing.

* HUD looks AWKWARD.

* Different alarm sound in Project: Valhalla's test facility.

* A guy saying "INGRAM!" in the background when Max shootdodges over an Ingram, picking it up.

* Shiny M79 barrel.

* And more.

As soon as B_Smiles provides me with the MP1 iOS files I'll start diggin' head on.

So let's begin another BETA hunt?

EDIT:

Turns out I misread it, PS2 doesn't have the BETA graphic novel but sure, it's good to look in the other ports of the game as well.

And one more random thing:

I think I unearthed the BETA test levels :

Update, image below says all:

https://imgur.com/a/PpH0g

* Restored unused Beretta shooting animation as seen in E3 2000, this animation is now used by all Max skins and their AI-controlled versions.

* Restored unused Beretta shoot sound.

* Made Max's pants grey quite like in E3 2000.

* Also fixed a slight bug on the jacket texture provided by The_Silver.

Now I merely need to change the jacket color to dark-blue...

EDIT:

OP to be updated soon, be on the lookout.

EDIT 2:

More changes:

* Removed Max's 100 health, now it's 60 like in the original game.

* Bullet Time regeneration behaviour reverted back to the original game's one (which is apparently non-generating).

* Shootdodging's Bullet Time requirement behaviour reverted back to the original game's one, now it requires and deducts Bullet Time.

OP updated.

I opened the levels in x_devmode.ras available from the link I posted, there are many .LDB files of several test levels in the .RAS, they come with .LVL files, which is a level's source file and can be loaded through Max-Ed (level editor for MP1) and then you can edit and export it to .LDB, making it playable and uneditable.

There's also a level containing the outside area of Punchinello Manor, it was probably used in the graphic novel.

But unfortunately, the game crashes while that manor's outdoor level is loading and loading the .LVL file of the level causes Max-Ed to crash, I couldn't see it.

A level containing the street outside Punchinello's Restaurant also exists, but like the manor outdoor area level, it crashes both in game and Max-Ed.

I also saw Ragna Rock's BETA variant, the level has only one room, some textures look plain bad, it feels like they're from early BETA.

Also, the graffiti that normally reads "duck the cops" in the final Ragna Rock level has it's "D" replaced with an "F" in the test level, as in the game originally had more strong language.

Other levels, such as "level_items.ldb" for example, includes an "un-leaveable" room from Punchinello's Manor with four tables which have weapons and ammo scattered on them.

Oddly, there are two Desert Eagles instead of one, and there's one Ingram instead of two.

Meaning, Dual Ingrams are an afterthought and Dual Desert Eagles were cut?

It still acts the same way, i.e. like this: values must be [0..1], when multiplier is close to 0, shooting will slow down when time slows down. when multiplier is close to 1, shooting will happen with constant speed when time slows down this multiplier is applied only to playercharacter [Olppa] 2001/01/30---------- - changed the player death camera to go for stronger slow-mo (to 0.3 from 0.5) - added [shake_drugtrip] camera effect - updated drug trip map [PJ] - updated weapon hud content - mphm_print text is now higher on screen so mappers can see it during widescreen mode... - changed one painkiller to give +20 health (was +10) - changed painkiller pocket size to 5 (was 10) - removed the "slowmotion thututuhum" sounds when player dodges left/right - removed all "enemy death gives health to player" from characters.h [samiV] - added AutoAimingAllowed flag to weapons - added AutoAimTargetBoneName to skeletons - added AutoAimTarget flag to skins - added MENUID_TOGGLE_AUTOAIM to menuid.h - added [Toggle] with that id to menu.txt (under other settings) - modified globalconfig.txt to have AutoAimCapsuleRadiusMultiplierXX and AutoAimCapsuleHeightMultiplierXX for each difficulty level instead of AutoAimConeMultiplierXX [Olppa]2001/01/29---------- - weaponid.h: SawedShotgun and PumpShotgun now share the same ammo - Updated Subway to a version which uses EnableExit messages [samiV]2001/01/26---------- - added globalconfig.txt/[cinematic]/ShootingFrequencyMultiplier values must be [0..1], when multiplier is close to 0, shooting will slow down when time slows down. when multiplier is close to 1, shooting will happen with constant speed when time slows down this multiplier is applied only to playercharacter - removed ShootingFrequencyMultiplier from skins, it can't easily coexist with slomo shooting frequency multiplier and it was not used anyway [Olppa] 2001/01/25---------- - changed crosshair cast lengths from weapons from 25 to 100 because 2d aiming can't work w/o enough long casts (it's very inaccurate to shoot to any distance above cast length) [Olppa]2001/01/24---------- - added two police_car sounds to dynamic category - delayed Sniper2x and Sniper4x bullet inits by one frame, and the gamespeed is put to slow already in the previous frame. young max payne? That's interesting. Unless they meant the one used in Prologue/3rd nightmare in which we kill ...Max Payne (wearing a suit).

That gravity part was interesting too. Max Payne did a great job with it's projectile physics, but fro what I can understand they wanted to make it even better by involving gravity in this? Damn. That would make the game even harder.

You are correct, the "young_max_payne" skin is the suit one.

That gravity part was interesting too. Max Payne did a great job with it's projectile physics, but fro what I can understand they wanted to make it even better by involving gravity in this? Damn. That would make the game even harder.

No, each projectile has it's own gravity multiplier ranging from 0.0 to 1.0, if the multiplier is close to 0.0, the projectile will be lightweight, and if the multiplier is close to 1.0, the projectile will be heavy.

The multiplier value is defined in each projectile's script file, bullet projectiles have their gravity multiplier set to 0.0 by default.

And notice how many things like the ability to use painkillers were added late in development :O? And there's a sh*tLOAD of content cut from the game.

So I suppose the only way to have a proper E3 2000 version of MP1 is to attack Remedy's offices? LOL , just joking :p! Let's dig in the PS2\XBOX files instead.

All righto, anyone who has a copy of Max Payne 2 on PC go here for probably the best mod I made:

http://gtaforums.com/topic/905915-relmp2-max-payne-2-fixing-the-payne/

And yes, it's that mod I was talking about a few posts back, it's now properly done (actually, it was done months ago but I accidentally deleted it, so I had to remake it).

Ever realized that Roscoe Bank doesn't have any guards? Well...

"Freeze, suckers! Roscoe Bank security!"

https://i.imgur.com/hj9iCTz.jpg

https://i.imgur.com/50nJ1V1.jpg

These textures have been lying in the game files but as you might have already guessed they went unused! I've been looking at 'em for a year or so and finally decided to reimplement it into the game last night, I took the Transit Cop model and simply made the model use the unused grey pants and the RB security jacket with the help of an excellent online hex editor known as HexEd.it.

I doubt if the guards had grey pants in E3, but hey, the pants look fitting with the jacket and the grey pants were probably unused too.

And according to the MP1 changelog above, this security guard skin was internally known as "bank_guard_dead" before it was cut, so when I implemented it in the game, I gave it proper internal names too! Note that I ADDED the skin, I didn't replace anything.

Unfortunately, I hadn't been able to edit .LDB files, so I guess the skin will be activated in the mod, but won't be used by any level.

But don't worry, I'll edit the Roscoe Bank level as soon as B_Smiles gives me the .LDB tools he was talking about and then I'll release the next update.

Judging by this trailer I have a strong feeling that initially maps were meant to be much smaller/tighter than they are in a final release (thank god). Couple of shots were taken in small alleyways, resembling these from first part of MP, when we were chasing Gognitti.

Besides, you think there is something interesting left in console versions of Max Payne? Or even mobile? Although there's a possiiblity that there are plenty of hidden stuff in mobile release (just like GTA III for instance).

Nah, they're just test levels they created, but who knows whether they are the BETA versions of the final ones, you could be right.

In the same video, a newsman can be seen announcing in the background that "Alex Balder was found brutally slain at the construction site" at 0:17, meaning Alex was meant to be killed at the construction site rather than the subway.

Interestingly, the "killing at a construction site" was reused in MP2, where Max kills Winterson in self-defense.

Also, at 2:14 in that video you added a link to, you can see Max killing Gognitti instead of leaving him alive, it was cut because Max wasn't meant to be a psycho.

At 1:43, the graphic novel cutscene where Frankie hits Max with a bat is shown, blood can be seen on Max and if you look closely at the speech bubble above Max's head, you'll realize that he's saying:

"Mona! What did you bastards do to her?!"

To which Frankie replies:

"You shoulda heard her, she was a real scream when the boys caught her trying to cap the don, he's (who is "he"?) gonna take care of that witch, for sure."

Meaning Max was meant to have a "bigger" relationship with Mona.

Also, there's no sign of Max's family in the pre-2001 E3 trailers, meaning Max was only out to avenge Alex and that's all? Or according to what I read somewhere once, Max was just a psychotic DEA agent sent by the mayor, but when Alex is killed, who was more like his boss instead of a friend, he is forced to kill everyone: Mobsters, junkies, Aesir Corporation bodyguards and even fellow DEA agents! Damn it Remedy, why cut out so many things?

Besides, you think there is something interesting left in console versions of Max Payne? Or even mobile? Although there's a possiiblity that there are plenty of hidden stuff in mobile release (just like GTA III for instance).

There's basically nothing in the mobile version, I've seen the files personally, so let's check the console files instead.

Well, discovered this last year but posting it now :bored:, some of the cut animations are shown in this video and it's quite self explanatory:

Damn, I hate to double-post, but what can I do? Anyways, here's some new progress:

* Implemented the PS2 credits theme as per George Costanza's "request", also timed it to play at the right moment.

I'll update the OP and download when I get enough time, the total file size is now 7 MB.

Now that I have my hands on a hex editor, I'm going to change the last level significantly, stay tuned for more updates ;).

You know, the animations when Gognitti shoots with one hand makes it look cooler. I mean, why did Remedy had to change those animations? Also is there any way to replace the death animations with ragdolls?

Yeah, I agree, it does look cool. God only knows what made Remedy to leave it unused.

Also is there any way to replace the death animations with ragdolls?

Sorry, but that's not possible because Remedy didn't fit that Havok engine they fitted into MP2.

They were probably broke as hell when they developed MP1.

EDIT:

Damn, just realized I forgot to tell you guys something:

Adding or deleting bytes in .LDB, .KF2, .KFS or .SKD files using hex editors works okay, but the file you edited becomes broken and the game either says "Invalid data read from an R_Memory file" or "Memory seek out of range" and then crashes when the game tries to load it.

However, editing existing bytes works real fine, so it's not that bad news.

Now prepare for a big update by night time! Because, y'know, night time is the right time.

Here's an update with 39 new features that will put you a little more closer to the E3 2000 version of MP1. The OP is updated, go get the mod from the first post.
Some screenshots:

This release also partially attempts to make Parental Lock remove some of the adult content it normally doesn't when it's enabled (Remedy's oversights or just laziness?).
Anyways, here are the new features:

* Fixed game difficulty-related bug where you would get akward amounts of ammo when playing on the "Fugitive" difficulty level.
* Restored unused Desert Eagle shooting animation as seen in E3 2000, this animation is now used by all Max skins, their AI-controlled versions and Killer Suits.
* Added the end credits music track from a special credits video available only on the PS2 version of the game.
* Recreated Roscoe Bank security guard skin, it's not used anywhere at the moment, but you can use the "-developerkeys" commandline to switch to it.

* The neutral mobster in "Fear that Gives Men Wings" (the one who gets you into the laundromat) now has skin variations.
* Restored the collision sounds of broken wood pieces, these sounds play when wooden objects (only the ones that break into several pieces) are broken.
* Bullets are now clearly visible during gunfights and when the game is paused, so now you can avoid damage by dodging them.
* Now you can kill NYPD cops, normally the bullets would just pass through them.

* Restored three different color variations of the trenchcoats worn by the Ragna Rock trenchcoat mobsters.
* Restored one coat texture of a fat mobster, a purple jacket texture of a street mobster (like in E3 2000), and a dusty jacket texture of a thin and bald mobster.
* Restored a light-blue undershirt texture of a mobster (this mobster is the one you encounter with a shotgun near the vending machine in "Roscoe Street Station").
* Restored three different texture variations of the coats worn by the Project: Valhalla scientists.

* Kinda fixed all of the weapons' shoot and reload sounds by increasing their volumes, they felt too silent.
* Added a new "GetLeadPipe" console command, you probably know what it does.
* Fixed the Dual Ingrams' wrongly-placed muzzleflash of the Ingram in Max's left hand.
* Characters now grin correctly when firing the Sniper Rifle, the Ingram and the Dual Ingrams.

* Transparent and semi-transparent textures with adult content now completely disappear when using Parental Lock, non-transparent textures still turn grey though.
* Removed all of the shine, chrome and fake specular effects on all weapons and their pickups, now they all appear in their true colors.
* Added a new graphic novel page that shows the game's title, this new page also the default one used by the game now.
* Optimized Max's voice set on all playable and AI-controlled Max skins.

* The AI-controlled Max now no longer has a Beretta in his hand when he appears tied to the chair in the first nightmare level.
* The dead mobster tied to the chair in "The Blood Veins of New York" also no longer has a Beretta in his hand.
* The small blood spots on the ground in "Police Brutality" now no longer appear when using Parental Lock.
* Restored a second shootdodge sound effect.

* The game now uses all four variations of the "melee weapon hits hollow metal" sound instead of one.
* Red bullet holes and red melee hit marks now appear on the "flesh" material (used by objects like the meat in "The Baseball Bat") if not using Parental Lock.
* The "flesh" material now also behaves just like the "character" material, with the same particle effects and sounds.
* All graphic novel pages are now really disabled when using Parental Lock, the only viewable page is now the new one that was mentioned earlier.
(This was done to bring Parental Lock in line with the text that says "all graphic novel screens are removed" when starting the game with Parental Lock on.)

* The dead mobster tied to the chair in "The Blood Veins of New York" now uses the "death" face texture correctly, like the other "custom death" animations.
* Max also uses the "death" face texture when he appears tied to the chair in the first nightmare level.
* The "Angel of Death" level and both nightmare levels now use the "asgard" skybox, which just shows a plain cloudy sky.
* The "Put Out My Flames With Gasoline" level now uses the unused "skyscrapers_streetlevel" skybox.
(The restaurant in that level is actually located in Manhattan instead of the Bronx, I noticed this in the fly-by intro level and the "Nothing to Lose" level.)

* Redid Max's pants grey color, the previous grey color was looking too "saltish".
* Darkened Max's jacket, I wanted to make it look just like the E3 2000 screenshots but failed, so this is the most accurate thing you get for now but I'll retry someday.
* Fixed the evil Max skin in the second nightmare level, I accidentally made it too hard, the boss fight difficulty level is now reverted back to the original game one.
* Changed the ReadMe's style, no more copying Silent's mods' ReadMes.

* Fixed the Rose Payne (Max's child) skin, I accidentally removed the invulnerability and no bullet collision parameters from the skin.
* Improved all "Jump to Chapter" texts.
* End credits track already converted with the Max Payne Sound Patch so the audio works on Windows 7.
* Reverted all of Nicole Horne's skin parameters to the original game one, I once turned her into a complete boss enemy, this had been in the mod since the first release.
(The female voice set I coded into the skin still remains though.)

On the top of all of this, I have some good news!
I'm planning to take the level "Manor_Outside", use a hex editor to fix the .LDB loading error and use Max-ED to edit it into a nice level.

For those who don't get what I'm talking about, "Manor_Outside" is a special level that was used for taking graphic novel shots, more information can be found a few posts back.
Anyways, so here's the how the level will work:

The first graphic novel page where Max says "Punchinello wanted Payne, he'd see the pain" will play as normal.
But then you'll be sent in-game, the rest of the graphic novel cutscene will not play (for now).

The spooky ambient track "Eerie Junkie Atmosphere" will be playing in the background.
Snow will be slowly falling everywhere, with ambient sound effects (not the ambient track), and the offscreen traffic will be audible from behind the manor's walls.

Max will start standing close to a wall, implying that he climbed over it.
The audio of the second graphic novel page where Max says "The trick in my situation was that there was no trick" will start playing in the background.

Then you will have the freedom to fool around or go around the back of the manor (if there's any back of the manor, I haven't seen the level yet).
And after that, the "Angel of Death" level will start with a "generic" loadscreen (like the one when starting the Tutorial level).

Then the third graphic novel page where Max says "Someone had graciously left the back door opened for me and killed the guards" and the rest of the cutscene will play.
And finally, the aforementioned second graphic novel page will also show up in the graphic novel and then you can play the "Angel of Death" level as normal.

If all goes well, this thought can become a reality!

Where in the game are the boys in blue?

Where in the game are the boys in blue?

They appear in "Let the Gun Do the Talking", "Police Brutality", "The Baseball Bat" and "Pain and Suffering".

EDIT:

Holy crack, it's the E3 HUD!:

35557-max-payne-screenshot.jpg

So the health indicator was a red health bar instead of a pain meter that goes up when Max takes damage, there's a parameter in the game's HUD configuration file that allows one to set which way the health indicator works, setting the parameter to TRUE makes the health indicator work like the normal pain meter, while setting it to FALSE makes it work like a health bar, the red color will then indicate how much health you have.

The same parameter exists in MP2 and works correctly since both games use the same engine.

Many more (awesome) screenshots can be found here:

I don't really like the E3 HUD. It looks boring. It would be better if you leave the HUD without any change.

Hey Eddo, I saw your thread and looks like I wasn't the only one too look deep into the content:

I did find Max screaming death sounds, but never took a look into the textures I guess, also the MP5 is at least the cut content that is widely known because actually there is a spawning cheat code when you use the console the refers to it, but instead, spawns the M4.

To my knowledge, the PS2 IGN video was from the E3 2001, but at this point, the game no longer had the MP5, but I do recall that the video is the source for March 2001 screenshots from Gamespot, which matches with the change date to the carabine, notice that a lot of enemies, specially the suit killers from the underground lab, had the e3 2000 hand, they didn't have a separate indicator finger, this continued until two months before the release for a few models.

As you can see in this video below, even the Roscoe Subway Station was somewhat different from the final game, it was also the last time that the church level appears, plus different animations for Deagle and Mac-10 for enemies and Max. Interesting enough, during March-May 2001 they did the final retouches for guns, as the jackhammer didn't have the carry handle and the Mac-10 was still the 1998 model.

I would check both the PS2 and Xbox versions too, who knows what they might hide.

Oh, what's this? A sudden update?:panic:

I managed to obtain the .LVL source file of the Subway_B level (the one where Alex is killed) from the official MP1 website!

Now I can peacefully add the bank guard dudes to the Roscoe Bank, stay tuned for another update;)...

And of course, sorry for bump.

@The Eddo Oh dude, this mod is amazing!, i was searching on the android and pc files of MP and found a lot of cut things months ago without knowing anything about this post, and the restorations are god damm awesome. (i also noticed that changelog on the mobile files and a ambience audio called "city-ambience.96" on the noise folder)
i want to know if you can restore the mp5?

man, they are a lot of thing to restore
also.... , did you found something interesting in the console ports?, apart from the cut songs?
And what was that image of Max aiming Nicole with a weird sunrise skybox posts ago?

Thank you very much, your appreciation is helpful to me. But unfortunately, the cut things found on the Mobile versions are the same as the ones found on the PC versions.

And, uh- can you send me that "city-ambience.96"? Maybe I can find some use for it in the mod...

The MP5 can be restored, very easily.

I didn't search the console ports of the game. Just went to Dimzet13's YouTube channel where I found this "MP1 PS2 credits" thing and checked it out.

That weird sunrise skybox is actually used in the "Max's house" level, it's shows the sun rising as Max nearly executes Horne, just a dumb feature I cut from the mod.
