Mystery, Suspense & Psychological Thrillers [Films & TV]

I wanted to make this topic as it's a genre of film I really enjoy yet it's hard to find great film in this genre(s). More particularly I like films like this when they're set in locations like the Pacific Northwest. You know a little creepy like Alan Wake with beautiful mountains and trees, with small towns and some crime and mystery in the air. A little bit like Twin Peaks. They don't necessarily have to be set in PNW but that kind of backdrop for a this genre is great. I'm looking for hidden gems like some below and some are not so "hidden."

A couple of great films I've seen like this are (and I'll live some trailers below).

The Pledge (2001)

Insomnia (2002)

Prisoners (2013)

Kalifornia (1993)

Blue Ruin (2013)

Green Room (2015)

Don't Breath (2016)

These are generally rated pretty well. There's one one or two that aren't rated too well that I've been mulling over giving a go. One is Blackway (2016) staring Ray Liotta and Anthony Hopkins. It ticks all the right boxes but the reviews are average to poor. Even the often generous scores of IMDB give it a 5.2. Maybe the setting and my love for the cast can make up for the the film's shortcomings.

I also heard Wayward Pines is like Twin Peaks. Haven't met anyone that has watched it yet.

So I'd love to hear if you know of a good film that's generally rated well or at least above average that I or others may not have seen. I've seen most of the popular films in these genres but some slip under the radar.

Blue Ruin as you mentioned is a great movie, I haven't seen Green Room, the directors next project yet though.

I would recommend Disorder. It's a slow burning thriller with strong psychological themes, well worth a watch imo, very strong performances by both Matthias Schoenaerts and Diane Kruger.

Excellent, that looks good. I'll give it a go.

Definitely check out Green Room. It's amazing!

Get Out is another recent one that's definitely worth watching too, if you haven't seen it all ready. But it leans to more Horror but is drenched in mystery/suspense.

Femme Fatale

Shutter Island is dope af. Well, to be fair, any movie with Leonardo Dicaprio is. Although the twist was kinda predictable, tbh. I'm kinda interested in reading the book, too.

Memento is Nolan's finest effort in this regards.

I actually never got around to seeing Momento after all these years. I must give it ago.

@FF: Yeah I think I may re-watch Shutter Island.

Thanks for the recommendations.

This movie. It's quite a long film but it's worth it in the end. Great film.

Y'know I got round to watching that and it didn't leave much of an impression on me. I felt that there wasn't more umph or whatever to it. Though the ending is great.

The whole thing is like a trippy dream but when all the pieces fall into place it really stuck with me. All kinds of messed up.

Speaking of Twin Peaks, I just started watching the new season(after also just watching the first two seasons for the first time). I haven't fully caught up with it yet, but damn is it bonkers. It focuses a lot more on the weird and creepy aspects of the original show and a lot of the time I have no idea wtf is going on. I like it better than the original show which actually had a lot of pretty pointless subplots.

Anyway the Guest from 2014 is a pretty great psychological thriller. I was gonna link a trailer, but the ones I saw were pretty spoiler heavy and I feel that it's better if you go into it without knowing too much about it.

That's good to know. I haven't seen the new season yet. I'll give it go.

And The Guest is fantastic. Great casting. Loved Lance Riddick in it.

@UshaB: I'll defo take a look in to that film. Cheers :D

@Miami: I really enjoyed The Frozen Ground and Sicario. Hobo With a Shotgun is fun but kind of stretching it.. little off the type of films I'm looking for. Have never see Get The Gringo. But yeah The Frozen Ground, completely forgot about that film but that's kind of the vibe, the frozen trees, the setting.. etc.

@Usha: Will check out, thanks again :D

@MuntyJack: That actually popped up in my searches. :)

@LB: Glad you liked it. Will defo check out a Nolan film
