A theory regarding lag

Periodically I have a lag issue. Controller input delay mostly. I am having it now. Just lagged out of Overtime Rumble.

Ran a speed test. 16.7 Mbps.

So it's not on my end.

This is a disclaimer: I'm not blaming anyone for doing it, but could this be caused by everyone messing with mtu settings?

No; it's caused by Rockstar not using dedicated servers. One person has a laggy connection, then everyone else feels the brunt of it. Or something like that.

In short, cash cards.

No one f*cks around with tweaking their MTU these days because everyone is on fiber so there isn't any need in doing it. I highly doubt enough people in a lobby even know what the hell MTU even is anyways.

Hunter knows what's up. p2p networked games always run into lag and always will.

You have a pretty slow download speed, but its only one factor. Allegedly, you only need like 4mbps to do online gaming. But Ping matters between you and the network and so does the distance between you and other players. Lag happens in this game and you could probably be physically located in the cloud and you would still get lag because of the p2p aspect. I am not convinced dedicated servers would reduce lag that much because distances between players would still cause a problem. I do think it would be better. For me lag happens a lot more in other modes especially dms. I believe its because the minimap dots do not show up. Just a theory.

You DL really doesnt matter, its you ping speed that is more important. Other players messing with their MTU is not going to cause you lag, P2p is the issue.

You really shouldnt speak for every player, there are a lot of players on this very forum that mess with their MTU settings, I am one of them :santa: , and I have no idea what you mean because everyone has fiber there is not a need to do it, can you explain that? curious I am. And are you sure you understand what the MTU does?

I think that UFO technologies are causing players to lag.

Download speed doesn't affect gaming as much as quality of the line itself, with 4mb/s you have enough to run gta online in a filled lobby of 30 players.

Plus this game uses Peer 2 peer connections for the online.. so there is that.. it will be lagguier than dedicated servers when you connect with ppl that are far away from you in the world.

I'm not familiar with P2P, everything I've been playing has dedicated servers.

My ping to the eastern US Planetside server was between 20 and 30 ms.

As others have said, one players bad connection in p2p can mess the whole thing up.

Distances can also be a factor. I've played games with people from the US, Europe and Austalia. Even if everyone has a great local internet connection that's never as smooth as if everyone is nearerer. Try testing your ping to a sever in the same city versus one on the other side of the world and you'll see what I mean. Conversely, when I was in University halls of residence we used to play network games over copper wire phone lines. Completely crap cabling compare to the fibre I have straight to house now, but because we were all in the same big building back then there was never a hint of lag.
