Why microtransactions are bad for consumers AKA free content can be sh*t

Recommended Posts

HockeyMike24

Online gaming is a very new thing still. It's like the wild west right now and companies can get away with setting their games up like slot machines... We should be pushing governments to be making laws around video games and enforcing current laws that help protect stupid consumers. The video game industry is currently the most profitable form of media so I think it's time for some rules

Thanks Belgium! Thanks! From February the 1st EA Sports won't sell anymore FIFA Points in FIFA 19 Ultimate Team, packs could only be bought via coins. Yes, Belgian players might be seriously disadvantaged than the rest of the world, now it'll be much harder for them to build a team that could at least compete with all those stupid icons, IFs, TOTYs, Screams, etc., etc., etc., but I guess that this "anti-lootboxes movement" had to start somewhere... Damn, I miss the old FIFAs where you could reach division 1 with an awful team, on FIFA 13 (which was my "first recent" FIFA after yeras and years of PES) I managed somehow to stay in D1 with a club that had 60/100 of chemistry that was fully composed by a mix of gold and silver players. Nowadays who has the best players wins and results like 7-5 or 4-6 are the daily occurance...

Anyway I hope this is just the start. I don't think ESRB will do the same thing that the Belgian government did, but I know for sure that other European nations are ready to remove these cancers called Lootboxes.

I doubt we see anything like this in the US of A. Only European/Australian governments do these types of stuff.

Can't see micro-transactions going anywhere soon.  Personally I hate them, gimme back my pre-2010 world of buying a game and actually...that was it, you didn't need to spend more damn cash to progress!

Some new EA f*ckery which basically surprises absolutely f*cking no-one:

Yeah, and I'm not here to hijack a passenger plane, I'm here to make a surprise landing. I'm not here with a bulldozer to demolish your house, I'm here to make some improvements to it.

Does EA think we're retards?

What: the jig

Where: up

Getting sick of this sh*t in Call of Duty lately. They've started putting new weapons behind loot boxes in Black Ops 4, and the Weapons are pretty powerful. They originally said they wouldn't do it and have gone back on their word again. Scummy bastards.

Yea Activision are baaaaaaaaaaaaaad when it comes to monetising their games. The new Crash Team Racing launched with a very mtx looking store but no mtx in sight, which no doubt means they're going to do what they do with Call of Duty which is launch the game without mtx and then add them in 1-2 months time so reviews and early press isn't hurt by horrible microtransactions.

Then you have the Blizzard part of that where Overwatch and Hearthstone are monetised entirely with lootboxes and lord knows what WoW monetisation looks like these days.

As for EA, they will say and do literally anything to stop Fifa Ultimate Team packs getting banned or regulated in some form, which includes lying to governments, cause they sure as hell have no problem calling them lootboxes when they're proudly saying their games don't have them.

EA genuinely thinks they can manipulate users through "paid progression" on a game some would eventually forget about anyway. A hint of some money-grabbing mechanics are present in GTAO, although I wouldn't say they're so much as a foundation like it's been with EA's recent games.

Gosh. What happened when past games had relatively quick progression but infinite replay value?

Most of FIFA and Battlefront 2 (until being revamped) I personally couldn't consider to be even a game anymore; really just a scam at this point. Quite agitating and disappointing.

EA are making it easy for me to not give them my money. If they start showing signs of being gamer-centric and gamer-friendly, I might consider buying their products again.

That and their games aren't even that great period. Fallen Order got a huge groan from me, Battlefield isn't even that good anymore. They are very focused on their Sports games which I couldn't give two sh*ts about. Their conference this past E3 was one of the worst I've ever seen.

As someone who plays Fifa yearly (because there are no real alternatives), they don't even give a sh*t about that either except for one mode, Ultimate Team. The single player career modes get superficial UI updates at best every year, depth has been removed regularly. The second most popular mode and the mode widely regarded as the best in the game (and the only reason I buy Fifa), Pro Clubs, gets thrown a bone every two or three years and that's it.

Last year they added a new mode that allows you to tweak the settings for matches (no rules, etc), but the mode straight up doesn't support online, it's offline only. This year they're added the highly requested street football modes to the game, but have done the exact same thing they did when they last released a dedicated street game mode (and ignoring player feedback) by not allowing you to play the mode with friends - it's 1v1 only as far as we know, can't play 5v5.

A few years back one of the most requested features was to overhaul the player career mode where you play as one individual player and their response was to make an incredibly scripted player career experience called The Journey that is scripted to the point where if you fail an objective in a game you have to repeat till you succeed, you also cannot play custom players, you have to play as the same player as everybody else. They continued with this mode for 3 years, despite awful player numbers every year. Then as a final cherry on the cake they've also consistently removed online modes from the game such as private lobbies, private 2v2's and public 10v10's.

Basically, if it's gonna take players away from FUT then they gut the mode or give it no attention till it dies and they can go "oh no one plays it so we removed it lol". Lets not even get started on the gameplay changes in recent years...

When it comes to E3, EA have had the worst showing every year this gen pretty much.

You don’t like Pro ?  I can’t stand Fifa but I like PES.

I agree with the aforementioned statement of Battlefield going to sh*t, because it did. Last good one was Battlefield 4.  That’s modern E.A. for you.  They’re a greedy corp that’s in it to make money, regardless of quality of the product they spew out.

E.A. is a horrible company, I hate when people compare E.A. & R*; as happens frequently on these forums.  They are not in the same league.

I try the demos every year p much, never liked the gameplay or presentation and I basically play Pro Clubs only now on Fifa so EA basically have me by the balls if I wanna play a football game.

The appeal of EA long ago shifted from interesting titles, to simply the names of the IP's they're working with. Star Wars sold their Battlefront franchise, FIFA sells because it's the only truly licenced football game out there, PES has slightly better gameplay and lacks the obvious scripting but those elements would come at a cost for EA.

Outside of the licences they have for big name franchises they have the rights to develop supposed AAA titles for there's nothing to warrant continual, long-term investment in any of their products. Which is why they stuff them full of anti-consumer mechanics and psychological traps to keep people "engaged" well past the point of interest and instead the utilise their titles to form something akin to an addiction toward it, it's why things like Anthem's in-game store is so horrifically designed and built on the concept of timed purchases, because it encourages you to try and rush through and snatch it while it's there rather than consider why it is you want the thing; apply this exact logic to all of their existing and future IP's and you have the reason why their company is so inevitably doomed.

The former shining stars of their vast empire of developers are no longer what they were, that is to say, they have as they always do sucked the life out of these once great developers and under their own stewardship have driven them toward ruin through gradual degradation of everything that made these studios so great to begin with. These days EA is fast running out of both any remaining good will even it's most loyal of customers used to hold for it, but far more pertinently is that they are fast running out of truly world class developers across the board and that's something they've had huge difficulty trying and failing to successfully recoup.

The reason for them trying to push Fallen Order so hard is to show that they still make the types of games that the developers they used to own created to make them the industry giant they are today, sadly for them Fallen Order looks discernibly average in effectively every category it could reasonably be judge on indicating that they're now no longer in possession of that talent, a more damning indictment than simply refusing to develop that sort of title anymore.

Take-Two/2K outdo EA on microtransactions and add a f*cking casino and slot machines in a basketball game.

Who even plays this garbage anymore? The best video I found about this was from AngryJoe.

The trailer for 2K20 got so much hate and rightly so, it got taken down, which is a cowardly thing to do. Leave it up and face the music and be rightfully humiliated.

I don't watch AngryJoe but I agree with him. MyTeam/Ultimate team modes in sports games are terrible. I never got the appeal of them. I'm disappointed in the NBA 2k youtubers/ shills who let this happen it took some guy like AngryJoe to actually force Take Two to take down the trailer.

I mean maybe if NBA Live was anywhere near as good as 2K gameplay wise, they wouldnt be able to get away with this sh*t. But Live cant even stick to a release date, let alone decent gameplay

If Live was in a better position EA would definitely try to fill it up with as many microtransactions as possible. Ever since Elite 11 was cancelled they've been playing catch up and keep failing.

But atleast if they both had mtx, they would hopefully have to focus on something else (preferably gameplay) to stand out against the other one. But youre completely right

I hardly play MyTeam but you don't really need money to use the wheel thingy it's actually free. 2k is dumb for choosing to design it like a slot machine though.
