Prodigy of Mobb Deep has passed away at 42

Recommended Posts

Mobb Deep rapper Prodigy has passed away at 42 years old. The rapper struggled with sickle cell anemia for his entire life and has reportedly passed due to complications from the disease, although his exact cause of death has not been determined.

His publicist confirmed Prodigy’s death in a statement to XXL:

"It is with extreme sadness and disbelief that we confirm the death of our dear friend Albert Johnson, better known to millions of fans as Prodigy of legendary NY rap duo Mobb Deep. Prodigy was hospitalized a few days ago in Vegas after a Mobb Deep performance for complications caused by a sickle cell anemia crisis. As most of his fans know, Prodigy battled the disease since birth. The exact causes of death have yet to be determined. We would like to thank everyone for respecting the family’s privacy at this time."

Several rappers have already paid tribute to the later apper, including Nas, Joe Budden, Q-Tip, and Jungle. Prodigy most recently performed in Las Vegas on Saturday as part of the Art of Rap tour, and before that appeared at Hot 97’s Summer Jam last week.

Prodigy rose to fame as one half of legendary New York rap duo Mobb Deep. Prodigy and Havoc first broke out with the 1995 album The Infamous, which featured the hit single “Shook Ones Part II.” They followed that up with Hell on Earth the next year and released a total of eight albums as a group. He also dropped several solo projects - most recently January’s The Hegelian Dialectic (The Book of Revelation) - and collaborated with some of the biggest names in hip-hop over the course of his career. This includes Nas, Raekwon, LL Cool J, Common, 50 Cent, and Big Pun.

It's a big loss to the Hip Hop Nation.

What a sad day for hip hop. I love Mobb Deep and I love Prodigy. One of my favourite rappers of all time. I'm gonna get drunk and listen to Mobb Deep all night long.

RIP you legend.

So sad... Rest in peace, to not just a NYC legend but a rap legend. The Infamous will stay one of the best albums i have ever heard.

If our world was a bit more fair these are people like Donald Trump or George W Bush who would be born with sickle-cell anaemia.

I remember hearing Breathe about 20 years ago for the first time and liked it.
