Ataribox - Atari's New Console

No, this is not a dream, no, this isn't the 80's and no, this isn't some kind of April Fools prank in June, Atari IS making a new console.

Recent times are strange aren't they? Unthinkable events are happening; Accolade is back from the dead (or in better terms, reappeared out of nowhere), Bubsy is back (yes, really), EA is no longer the main villain (that honor now goes to Ubisoft), Microsoft had a decent E3 for once (and Sony's getting relatively worse) Rockstar has declared mods illegal (even though it's what has got them where they are in the first place, I honestly never thought this would happen), and now this. It's like we woke up in a parallel dimension, or in the 80's, or in a parallel dimension IN the 80's.

I never thought this would happen in a million years, especially how Atari is now. What are they? A shadow of their former selves? Not even. I haven't heard their name since that one WatchMojo video listing all of the best consoles (it was ages). They are an enigma.

I personally don't think they could survive in this market, it's already crowded enough with Nintendo, Sony and Microsoft, with their three-way fanboy console war, that I doubt there is any more room for one more. They'll bankrupt themselves again! Unless they can come up with some INSANE console exclusives (UGH, console exclusives, I hate that concept on ANY system, but apparently consoles can't survive without them), they're doomed. I honestly just hope this console is just a gaming PC meant to compete in THAT market (where they could dominate) instead of a conventional console, where they will be brutally be stomped on by the big three (in gaming).

What do you guys think of this?

Well, do you have a link to any information about it? Is it going to just be a retro console with old Atari games on it?

I mean a lot of this is quite subjective. Why's Ubi a villain? Also, I didn't think MS's E3 was that great personally.

Not much info on it yet, but yeah I would guess it would something smiliar to the NES Classic.

A NES Classic-like device is the only thing that makes sense for Atari to make.

However, unlike NES games, Atari games haven't aged well at all. And don't have nearly as much of a following as the NES games do. Can you name one great exclusive on the Atari Jaguar? Or something from its 80s era that isn't available elsewhere?

If they're trying to cash in on nostalgia, they may make some bucks off of it. But not nearly enough to be a profitable venture, imo.

And if they're trying to compete with the other 3, well, they'll just go out of business again.

I agree. Companies like Activision are much much worse. Ubisoft is still much better and much more creative.

I can't see how a new Atari platform would fare well against three firmly established platform providers. Not saying they're all good, mind you - I just think the resources needed would be way beyond realistic to even consider competing, plus you need strong third-party support or you might as well pack up and go home.

If it's another 'retro' venture, fine... but these types of thing already exist (for the VCS at least). It'd have to bring something else to the table. Also I agree, while I personally love many 2600 and 7800 games for that quaint classic charm and wonderful simplicity that only very old videogames can deliver, these games won't be as well received by contemporary gamers who seem to rate graphics above anything else, even more than we did in the early 1990s. If they're not the intended demographic, who is? Retro gamers? Even though that's a growing market in recent years it's still very niche. The NES Classic did well because it's a NES emulator. It's not it's age, it's the content, and what that means to a certain type of consumer. Even though the damn thing was held to ransom and grossly overpriced with such a restricted library.

I still have a working VCS - got it for £30 on Ebay. With no moving parts its likely to keep working for a while longer yet and the games are cheap and surprisingly plentiful... so if this is a classic nostalgia venture only, and most people who appreciate Atari already own one or can get second hand consoles online for half the price of a standard AAA game (or less than an Atari Flashback), I don't see how this is a good angle either.

Something to keep an eye on, regardless. It's interesting anyway :)

I honestly doubt that Atari's new console is going to be a retro box, since this is a console based on "PC technology" (even though every single console ever is technically based on PC technology), and Atari themselves said that they're back in the hardware business. Besides, they already have a retro console, it's called the Atari Flashback. The new console they're presenting is called the AtariBox (even though we already have the DirectXbox), and we still don't know much about it. About Ubisoft being the villain, they've been losing respect from gamers for a while, with their graphical downgrades and other stuff, and EA is actually gaining some respect, but Activision has ALWAYS been a villain, and would probably stay that way. It's fine that you think that Microsoft's E3 presentation wasn't that good, it's your opinion, I'm talking about the general consensus.

The only way I could see it succeed is by making it like NES classic BUT with the addition of new exclusive modern games. This way both people who buy it for classic games and people who buy it for new games have something more to squeeze out of the console. If they made it strictly for new games then the selection of games would probably be very poor. I mean they aren't as big as Nintendo nowadays.

Atari plans to deliver classic games in the Ataribox, alongside “current content.”

It is sexy.

I hope it isn't a retro box.

They [Atari] replied to my email regarding employment, but haven't hit me back with a promised follow up.

Since they are recruiting a few general teams it has me thinking that it might be a fresh platform and not a retro or mobile box.

*it will probably be a mobile box. :(

**better not be. :(

E:

Hey!

It can't be a knock off toss away piece of crap. I read the teaser article first thing this morning and it just now struck me...its main materials are wood and glass. Not a cheap ass piece of plastic. Even Xbox and Playstation are all plastic.

Every time I read about Atari it bums me out. After the failure of the Jaguar system and the companies subsequent failure, the new trademark holders have just been cashing in on the retro market.

Will this be a proper entrant into the console wars? I just can't see it. It'll be interesting to watch though. It seems the parent company wants to issue tech goodies on the atari brand because of name recognition.

Cheers.

one more reason it makes me feel that its just the same console on a different case, they dont have anything more to sell so a nice wooden case that looks good it is.

Ps and xbox are plastic and miles away from any atari technology, so ill trade the wood and platic over a 3 competitor on the console market

They dropped a pretty bad sign on one of their announcements: Crowdfunding.

For all intents and purposes, this appears to be just another android-powered "console", capable of emulating classic Atari games as well as anything on the Android store.

Yeah, another OUYA in the making. Pass.

Yeah, that's no good. But I doubt it'll be another "android box", it will most likely be something else, but who knows.
