Gunrunning Update (Seemingly) Patched Abusive Exploits

I've been looking at how Rockstar chose to combat the general method used to do some of the well known recent mods and as far as I can tell this is a pretty solid fix. They added numerous checks to ensure certain things can only be received when they're meant to be received (ex: Only receive securo reward when the game is meant to be giving that) and checks to ensure things aren't spammed, like giving money.

 

It only covers certain mods that used a method that was spread among mod developers recently but some of them were the more abusive ones that were annoying a great number of players. This thread primarily discusses abusive mods that used this method.

 

Short list of well known things done with this method off the top of my head that are now seemingly patched for good

  • Non-Host Kicking (This seems to have just been removed from the game all together)
  • Forcing players to Enter or Exit properties/apartments
  • Giving Money "Remotely" (without the need for physical drops like bags)
  • Giving RP
  • Locking the players camera (i.e. camera glitch or camera reset)
  • Clearing another players wanted level
  • Giving another player Off the Radar or Bullshark Testosterone

Well known things that were already patched via hotfix that were previously done using this method

  • Take Money (+ put in badsport. i.e. "Insurance Fraud")
  • Older "Remote" Money methods
  • Old Give RP (+ Derank / Take RP) method

 

Now there's always the possibility there's some way around it, as has been seen with Rockstar's attempts to patch things in the past, but looking over it, a lot of the checks they've implemented prevent any of this from executing from the victims side, so it's not something that can be bypassed as far as I can tell. Good news for many players.

 

EDIT: It appears Take Money (+ put in badsport. i.e. "Insurance Fraud") has also been removed from the game all together.

The way they patched it has client (victim) sided checks. If these were local checks (on the modders end) it would be very easy to bypass, but it's essentially impossible to bypass the checks since they're done when the method is received by the victim, on the victim's machine. And there's no alternative method for doing any of this.

 

With the things like forcing other players to do animations or teleport, it was "bypassed" after the original patch by using an alternative method that could accomplish the same task. Just because of how this inherently works, there is no alternative method, and they just put the existing method on lockdown. I'll be extremely surprised if someone finds a way around the numerous checks.

 

Some things might still be possible, but if even possible it's likely they can't be used multiple times (spammed), and most of the appealing mods likely won't work since they're only allowed to be received in certain instances/scenarios.

Stuff like this will always resurface though. They still need to have event listeners, they might just be signed responses but someone will still find a way around them at some point I bet.

^^ Where there's a will, there's a workaround. Always has been, always will be.

 

As time in GTA Online has told.

 

Not taking sides; acting strictly as JAFO (been screwed over by both sides too many times).

Here is a list of things that I hope you're willing to give confirmation have been patched out as well:

  • godmode players
  • godmode vehicles
  • taking away every gun from a player
  • teleporting other players when they're outside properties
  • cheaters being able to teleport anywhere
  • explosive ammo on weapons that shouldn't have them
  • remotely exploding other players
  • remotely kicking other players out of their vehicle
  • aimbots that let cheaters instantly headshot (even from behind barriers)
  • ability to crash other player's games (making them have to kill the game's process in Task Manager and restart the game)

Any of these have the ability to ruin the Gunrunning update for us non-cheaters.

i'm disappointed. Apparently they're back already according to users in the PSA thread.

Guess we'll have to wait and see what others say instead of just 1 person. Given how this patch works, I doubt it unless it's an entirely different method.

Patching god mode and low level sh*t like that I don't see coming any time soon. Not without patching all illegitimate native calls (which they won't do)

Give this sh*t up guys, there is no fixing of hackers on PC unless they rework the entire infrastructure to make dedicated servers.

Vote to kick works just fine, what I think this is, is the ability for modders to vote kick anyone from the session instantly.

 

How I imagine it works (when done legit, not mods) is the vote kicks roll in from other players and surpasses the 50%+ lobby voting to kick threshold, at which point the "host" system (GTA p2p system is really odd but yes each session effectively has a "host") for that session then tells the system of the vote kicked players "lol ur kicked bro" and kicks them from the session.

 

What cheaters could do, is just vote kick anyone anytime, even though they're not the "host" of that session.

Vote to kick is unaffected.

 

In terms of mods, there's Host Kick and Non-Host Kick. Host Kick can't be blocked by other modders (currently) but requires the modder be host of the session in order to kick them. Non-Host Kick used this method that is now patched to kick players from sessions without the need to be host, but could be blocked by other modders since it uses the same method as everything else listed to accomplish this.

Yeah, I was 99.9% sure they weren't.

 

Most of the things I listed were things I've personally experienced in the multiplayer of GTA IV on PC. Some of which I experienced on the PS3 version and in the multiplayer of Red Dead Redemption. I'm honestly dumbfounded at how any of these are still problems. How did they not foresee any of this current sh*t happening? These are problems that have existed for years (GTA IV was released in 2008). Most of which are a real problem in GTA Online because they can make doing CEO/MC/Gunrunning work unfair for non-cheaters.

 

I just don't get it. I seriously don't.
