Anthem [2019]

It really reminds me of those console ports from the big publishers like 10 years ago or so, piss poor optimisation, controls and UI where you can tell they never once thought how this would play with a keyboard and mouse. Mass Effect Andromeda had the same issues as well, but not to the extent Anthem has them. It's one of the worst PC UI's I've ever seen.

 

There might be some diamond in the rough here on PC, who knows, but it's under a mountain of sh*t you can't clean off. It just... isn't worth it at all. Hopefully The Division 2 is up to snuff, Ubisoft at least are pretty good with their PC UI's and controls.

I wish I could remember the one bad port where the UI even had the xbox controller prompts.  My keyboard doesn't have a big green A and red B...what the f*ck do I hit?

 

Having shifted to console after having been keyboard mouse since the first mouse(not joking) I'm really hoping that kbm support on xbox takes off.  It will be a win win since we all know kbm is best.  :)    I'm no game developer but I have written a couple of 360 games.  My navigation was always mouse cursor based and then I would conform it to a controller.  There are actually semi strict guidelines you have to adhere to in order to get past the early stages of submission review.

 

Maybe real developers will start with a kbm approach and conform to controller instead of the traditional start with controller approach we have now.

 

 

 

 

And yes.  Excited for The Division 2.   I've got my preorder in and have been watching drips of gameplay videos. I'm not a big multiplayer person but I did enjoy The Division.  I love games that take place in familiar settings and times.

MS are slowly beginning to properly support mouse and keyboard on Xbox I think, Sony are lagging behind a bit though if I recall. They are surprisingly popular on console already though, there's growing amount of shooter players who use them for the advantage. That's the stumbling block for widespread M+KB support I think, balancing the two control types in multiplayer games where one control type has a clear advantage.

 

But yea, I played a bit of the The Division 1 my self. Wasn't fond on how they built end-game builds around sets but they figured out what works by the end and I reckon The Division 2 will be a pretty solid option for a looter shooter.

Pretty much. I really like the flying mechanic and the I'm surprised at how good the gunplay feels (I hated the gunplay in Mass Effect, felt too weightless), but it's not a day one buy for me in any sense. I'll nab it when it's down to $35-40 or so. Maybe.

echoing what others have said - mouse control really doesn't work for flying - optimised around controller.  took a while to get the hang of flying so I didn't really follow the objectives that well; didn't really seem much in the way of story whilst in the field.

 

that said, the bit back in the base where 

Spoiler

the guy that sent you out to get some equipment split into 3 people with different personalities

 

does point to some interesting story telling.

From the early impressions I'm reading people are discovering all sorts of horrible and honestly bizarre stuff that makes me think BioWare's talent (and common sense) is just gone.

 

For example, you can matchmake into the final story mission in the game even if you're a brand new player who has never completed 1 story mission, spoiling the story for your self and getting 1 shot over and over in the process cause you're not at a high enough level.

 

That's bad enough, but there's worse. After a few main story missions you are then given a task to open some tombs, but to do that you need to be "worthy". How do you become worthy? You have to do a wide range of tasks: 

 

Artinia: 5 World events, 30 Weapon defeats, 15 weak point defeats, 9 elite defeats


Cariff: 3 missions, 30 gear defeats, 15 combos, 3 multikills
Gawnes: 50 Melee defeats, 50 ult defeats, 3 legendary defeats
Yvena: 15 chests, 25 harvests, 3 javs repaired, 10 collectibles

 

From what I'm hearing people have been at those tasks for hours and have yet to finish, freeplay with a group is also a mess which doesn't help. It might just be one of the worst cases of story gating I've ever seen.

I loaded up a stream of someone playing it, he was in a stronghold I believe and I kid you not I saw 5 loading screens before he finally started playing it. The amount of loading going on makes GTAO's loading screen issues look absolutely fine lol. In Anthem you even get a loading screen if you stray too far away from your group.

 

There's little dungeons in freeplay, if you go in you get a loading screen, leave and another loading screen. I can only assume all these loading screens are a thing because Frostbite isn't made for a game like this and they've had to duct tape the whole game together with loading screens to make it work. EA forcing Frostbite onto every one of their devs may just be starting to haunt them.

i started one and got a very long loading screen, so when i finally started the mission my team mates were already far away so i got pulled close to them with another loading screen LMAO. im only with the 14.99 subscription for this month, ill try this one for 30 days and other games that are available, and decide if i will buy it when it expires

25 hours of gameplay and the game is finished, what a joke. and this is already with alot of the same 3 strongholds being replayed.

Not to mention its a looter/shooter with no loot lmao

Considering how Anthem is so bad that even our PlayStation 4 consoles no longer wish to play it any further by corrupting their own databases to make sure it gets the point across to you, I'd say Bioware is kind of screwed here either way.
