The problem with 1980s Miami for me is that there isn't much of the Mafia there. It's more Colombian and South American cartels that ran things.

1950s -60s Miami could have worked a bit with the Cuban Revolution and what not.

But I don't want to see the 50s-60s again.

@Zello Interesting trailer. Might give that a watch.

I really enjoyed the fact that Mafia III devs took a chance and set their game in a city that doesn't much rank high in places that you expect a GTA-style mob game to be set in. GTA claimed Las Vegas first and San Francisco and possibly LA and Miami for doing an open-world, city-based crime game. At least Hangar 13 can claim New Orleans and that was refreshing. Could they claim dibs on another city?

I would love to see a game based on Boardwalk Empire. That was Atlantic City, New Jersey. Now, as a city that might not seem like the most exciting city to drive around in - it's a bit small and what-not but I think Mafia is more about details. I'd rather a small city with a high-level of detail and enterable buildings than a sprawling one that doesn't have much functionality. With that in mind, Atlantic City during prohibition can absolutely work. Beer barons, illegal gambling dens, illegal breweries, opium dens, and beer running etc. Could be fun.

Having rewatched The Untouchables for the umpteenth time, I'm wondering if doing a sorta-kinda-not-really reboot wouldn't be a good idea - if not for the next game (because I still reckon that something more '80s would be ideal for Mafia IV), but for something after that.

I.e., back to the Prohibition era, but this time you're taking down the mob, not unlike Mafia III. Not going to lie, I'm just hung up on the idea of getting this kind of thing adapted into videogame form:

...but if any existing franchise could incorporate it, it'd be Mafia. Particularly because a realistic, GTA-style open world would be a great fit, and especially considering that Mafia is arguably the most grounded, realistic (in both tone/stakes) of all the GTA-like franchises.

i want mafia 4 to be more like your a member of the mafia and you work your way up the ranks of a mafia family and eventually become boss. and be like the godfather games where you can go to war with other mafia families, extort businesses and do all kinds of mob stuff. not some gta vice city ripoff set in 80's miami.

I crave a rags-to-riches, rise through the ranks Mafia based title done well. Scarface: The World Is Yours probably did the best job of empire building; buying businesses/fronts, cocaine importation and distribution etc than any other game.

Can we have a game where game-play mechanics can operate almost infinitely, and independently outside the story, and still be realistic to the to the story? For example, I like the idea of building my empire, acquiring turf, cash, things and building reputation. I think this type of game-play is fun. However, I like a rich story. How do you reconcile the two with out compromising the other?

I say, build the game play mechanics first. Make the game as interesting as possible first before writing a story on top of it, so the story is consistent with what the player is doing outside the story. For example, what if I got really rich outside of doing story missions. There would be some dissonance between gameplay and story, if the story had me burgle some low-end jewelry. I don't know the answer. I just want a developer to make a game where, I can gain advantage and tap in to my inner, greedy criminal and still have a consistent story that doesn't contradict what I choose to do in free-roam time. San Andreas was good at this. I could earn as much money as possible and win big in the casinos but having all the cash couldn't resolve the issue with getting my brother back.

I think Mafia III tried to fix and attempted to do what I'm talking about and didn't quite hit the mark but I applaud the attempt. I'm not really a fan of linear stories set in "open" worlds. L.A. Noire and Mafia and Mafia II were much like this. The city is just an elaborate cock-teasing background with some fine interactive features in Mafia II but ultimately lacking any player freedom. Mafia III was attempted to make some player-generated story by enticing more exploration and activities outside the story narrative but was still feeding into the narrative but perhaps not-so-well. It's a pity because I think the idea is novel.

I think a modern setting could work well, my reasoning is the mob are no longer the big players in the world of crime, the RICO act really did a number on them, the code of silence mightn't hold as much weight when your looking at 25+ years in prison.

So a modern setting with the mob trying to become big players again, facing off against gangs from the Americas and other international crime syndicates, trying to eke out a corner of the criminal underworld.

Mafia 4 needs to go back to the roots of the series, which is a linear story-driven experience that explores the inner circles of the Italian Mafia, with emphasis on realism in gunplay, animations and driving. I'm not optimistic about that since the game's development was moved from Czech to a US-based studio.

mid 70s-late 90s mafia set in a more bigger and detailed empire bay (nyc/jerz) can be similar to john gottis rise to power, all the informants and in fighting between families. can even be a dlc where u play as a undercover/rat on the other side of the law

If they decide to do 1970s Vegas I want it to be a two city game. The main protagonist based heavily on Ray Luca from Crime Story and Nicky from Casino. The Family sends you down from either Empire Bay or Lost Heaven to help run its casino and gambling operations out there. You travel between both.

I'll happily take any combination of Mafia IV, a current-gen Mafia II remaster (it's backwards-compatible on Xbox, but I'd love to see it get the same kind of treatment as L.A. Noire), and/or a current-gen console version of the original game - only one I don't need is III, because that's already playable and enhanced on higher-end consoles.

(granted, if 2K put out a 'Mafia Trilogy' all-in-one, I'd buy III again just to have all of them in my library and up to date...)

My mafia 4 idea:

set in empire bay in the year 1963. you are an enforcer for the vinci crime family and become don after frank vinci the boss passes away. the map contains not only empire bay but also a countryside the size of bayou fantom from mafia 3. the game contains empire building elements that are similar to the the godfather 2 and scarface the world is yours. the player can either be allies or go to war with other gangs in the city. there are several gangs in empire bay here is a list.

  • clemente crime family
  • falcone crime family
  • vinci crime family
  • triads
  • irish mob
  • devils angels motorcycle gang

your safehouse in the game is the vinci mansion which can be completely customized similar to tonys mansion in scarface the world is yours. cars can be purchased from car dealerships. businesses can be interacted with like mafia 2 again. you can also make businesses on your turf pay you protection money by extorting them. new vehicles such as motorcycles, bulldozers, tractors, and boats are drivable. you will be managing a variety of businesses and rackets, these include

  • protection: doesnt require the player to own a building to operate. can be done simply by going around and extorting businesses on your turf. makes a weekly income that depends on how many businesses are paying you protection money.
  • weapons trafficking: requires player to own a warehouse to operate. it can not only be used as a way for the player to make money but also as a way to get free weapons. assualt rifles and grenades can be sold or obtained by the player through this business depending on your relationship with the bikers. makes a weekly income of $500,000
  • car theft: requires the player to own a garage to operate. can be used to get free cars. stolen vehicles can be sold through this business. makes a weekly income of $500,000
  • waste management: requires the player to own a garbage depot. makes a weekly income of $500,000
  • constuction: requires player to own a construction HQ to operate. gives the player the ability to purchase land and have buildings built that can be used for your rackets or put up for sale. makes a weekly income of $500,000.
  • smuggling: requires player to own a shipping port. makes weekly income of $500,000

side missions:

  • contract killing
  • truck hijacking
  • street racing
  • bank robbery

weapons:

  • knife
  • bat
  • crowbar
  • tire iron
  • meat cleaver
  • brass knuckles
  • garrote wire
  • shovel
  • browning pistol
  • m1911
  • S&W M29
  • snubnose revolver
  • shotgun
  • lupara
  • thompson m1a1
  • beretta model 12
  • grease gun
  • H&K MP54
  • m1 garand
  • m1903 springfield
  • m1 carbine
  • m14
  • winchester model 70
  • molotov
  • grenade
  • triggered explosive

weapons are highly custmizable and can be equiped with sights, silencers, and extended clips and can be given differant engravings, painted jobs, finishes, more.

Nice read, but imo the best part of Mafia is a play with actual meaning of this Italian word. It's better when game focuses on relationships more, than on outside world. Gang wars for me every time sound like GTA, you can't really make a touching story from beefs. Even San Andreas through all that gang war mess did more relayed on Carl's family drama. Mafia shouldn't turn into mob simulator, it should be on an edge between a good game and a good movie.

Galveston, Texas could work during prohibition in the 1920s/30s. It'd be a lot like Atlantic City in Boardwalk Empire but at the same time Atlantic City is a more attractive setting if they ever decide to go down that route I'd prefer they pick Atlantic City.

1. New York and for it to be like GTA IV in having a lot of different other mafias, including Russian, other Eastern European, Japanese, Chinese, Korean, etc. though still from an Italian mafioso’s standpoint. That would definitely breathe a lot of fresh air into the series. :)

2. 70s. It just might breathe some fresh air into the series, much like the above.

3. Music. Everything else about the game kinda sucks IMO.
