What video games would you like to see made into episodic shows?

Homemade Dynamite

As the title says, what video games would work well in an episodic format, either animated or live-action?

We've heard it all before about video game movies. They just suck, because there's too much to fit in, and all too often they're made by people with no familiarity with the games themselves. However, I find that video games work better when adapted into episodic formats. This came from seeing web series based on video games, as well as the animated video game adaptations. Castlevania on Netflix looks awesome, and there's a lot of hype for The Witcher live action series. That's why I'm asking about shows, not movies. I'm convinced we'll never see a good video game movie, but shows are a different story.

As for a video game I'd like to see get adapted into a show, and one I think is actually happening, is Overwatch. The game is a perfect fit for an animated format, as shown with the amazing animated shorts. I think a series on Netflix would be perfect, as it would allow them full creative control to tell the story and they wouldn't have any enforced censorship that network television has. In it's current state, Overwatch almost feels like a tie-in to something that doesn't actually exist yet. There's so much lore, yet we've only scratched the surface of it.

As for why I think it's happening, it's because they founded Activision-Blizzard Studios in 2015 specifically to adapt properties from both sides of the company. There's already a precedent for a Netflix series, as they've made the successful Skylanders Academy for the service as a Netflix Original, and it was successful enough that they said they wanted to adapt more properties. Also, Blizzard CEO Mike Morhaime stated that he wanted to reach new audiences with linear media and consumer products. Also, D.Va actress Charlet Chung posted at the same time that she just became a regular on an animated series. Could be coincidence, but definitely something to consider.

Anyways, what video games would you like to see adapted in shows, and how would you like to see it done? Let me know what your thoughts are.

Metal Gear would make for a pretty fun TV show.

I haven't finished Life Is Strange but I could see that being a really fun quirky throwback to Speilberg style films of the 80's. Kind of like Stranger Things.

I would also like to see a TV show of Wolfenstein. The most recent game was brilliant and the alternate history aspect, I find thrilling. The Nazi's won the war, join the resistance and fight them

Resident Evil 1, 2, and 3.

Would be so great to see episodes surrounding the investigation of the Spencer mansion, the introduction of the hunters, the chimeras, the fight with the Tyrant...

And then going into 2, with the lickers. Oh man can you imagine how good the scene of the licker breaking through the interrogation room glass could look if shot properly? Plus Birkin, the special forces, Mister X tyrant...

Finally landing into 3, with Nemesis the ever-chasing relentless foe. The suspense could be so well managed with the possibility of Nemesis showing up at any moment to attack the main characters...

Femme Fatale

Man-f*cking-hunt, bro. 'Nuff said.

And Max Payne would've been better off being a mini-series, too, instead of that joke of a movie.

Monkey Island.

We already have Venture Bros for the superhero genre.

Now we need Monkey Island for the pirates genre.

Sounds like it'd be kinda boring.

Now that you mentioned Max Payne, I think it's definitely a good idea. The first game atmosphere was amazing (that soundtrack...).

I think Fallout would make a good TV drama. Imagine something like The Walking Dead in the Fallout universe. It could follow a lone wanderer character and/or a group of characters as they try to survive in the wasteland. I think there's enough lore there to make a pretty good series.

Injustice: Gods Among Us; it's a DC fighting game, with a rather creative story. If they utilized the characters well, it could be a great live action viewing.

All those characters on a live action episodic series?

You are better off with a animated series. Knowing DC, that's for the best.

There's a Splinter Cell movie in the works with Tom Hardy as Fisher, I hope it doesn't flop, Hardy some shoes to fill and I don't want it to be a full on action movie. But, IMO a TV show with the guy who did the mocap and voice for Sam Fisher in Blacklist would be good, he did great and I'd like to see more of him.

Great news. And I agree.. a full-on action film wouldn't ideal but some drama, suspense mixed with some occasional action would be nice. Something tells me they'll try turn it in to a mindless action flick though.

Also, I'll bet my left nut that they'll get two half-baked screenwriters for it. With Tom Hardy on board, I can almost guarantee the most of the budget will go to him while they skim on actual writers and a good director and cinematographer. Well, the director and cinematographer might be competent but it's not worth jack when the writing is sub-par.

WoW would probably be the most expensive series on tv, but Id like to see it adapted for mature audiences like GoT.

Hitman could work. They can focus on the target "monster of the week style" and we see why they are supposed to be killed. 47 would be in the background in a disguise but with no focus on him so that you can see him only if you watch the episode a couple of times. The last third or so could be when 47 is in focus and we see how he escapes and kills the target.

Ratchet and Clank. Didn't work as a movie, but it could as a cartoon.

Holy sh*t that's a super cool idea. A Hitman TV show focusing on the targets rather than the man himself; in a way having 47 becomes the villain as we watch things unfold from the target's perspective.

I remember the writer calling it a first person shooter. I found that funny; but I really don't care. It's Tom Hardy as Sam Fisher doing cool spy things so that should be a half decent watch at least.

I know you said TV Shows but this comment goes for both TV/Movies

To be honest i've never liked movies that were made based off video games and books because you have an expectation on how you think the movie is going to go because you know the game/read the book but then disappointment comes when the movie is nothing like the game or book or if it is only slightly and misses a lot of key parts

A video game that would be good as a TV drama, you say?

Well, as it seems that Ubisoft and/or Reflections have no interest in carrying on the franchise (excluding the Speedboat mobile game), I would like to see Driver as a series. With old-Hollywood-style car chases, I don't think there has been a TV show like it (maybe Dukes of Hazzard?). Whether it's based off Drivers 1-3, Parallel Lines, San Francisco or all three in some cinematic universe similar to Marvel/Netflix/ABC's, I think it would make a cracking TV show - provided it gets a decent cast and budget of course.

Observe.
