LazlowsucksiloveslutS
By melee I mean hardcore hand to hand fighting. Of the games that I've played, I think the best melee system is in True Crime Streets of LA. I liked the variety of moves and techniques it had: roundhouse kicks, side kicks, knees, elbows, jumping kicks, even a tiger's claw. Fighting is intense in this game. Bosses also had diffferent skill levels in boss fights. Sleeping Dogs felt disappointing in comparison. Other games I think had cool fighting systems are Mafia 2 and GTA Vice City. In Mafia 2 there's no kicks, but finishing combos look really cool. And I have always been impressed by Tommy Vecetti's karate. He must have third degree black belt or something. What games in your experience have the best melee fighting?

Matrelith
The Batman Arkham series had good combat. The controls were pretty simple but you could do pretty cool combos combining Batman's gadgets. You'd almost feel sorry for the thugs he beats up. And in Arkham City you had Catwoman, Nightwing and Robin who brought in their own gadgets and moves. chronic lumbago
Yakuza 0. So underrated! Two main characters with 3 different and unique fighting styles each, every style has its own skill tree, a hidden badass fighting style for each character. Finishing moves, combos, training, fight club and awesome boss fights. I was going to say Sleeping Dogs, but Yakuza blows it away. Cosmic Gypsy
In terms of realistic, hardcore hand to hand combat, The Warriors takes it hands down. You can tackle running targets from any angle at any time, throw people around in any direction, grapple people, punch, kick, knee, elbow, headbutt, standing/fallen targets or even targets currently fighting other AI. Use the environment in fights, for example, smashing peoples heads into windows, lamp posts, you name it. The ability to pick up bricks, trash cans and general street objects, smash up street chairs and market stalls during fights. Special moves you can perform normally or more severe Specials when your "rage" meter is up, brutal yet realistic moves. Not overly martial arty, not artsy fartsy, just pure, kicking people in the head street fighting. Gameplay was fluent, responsive, and fast paced unlike GTA IV and V which are both sluggish, unresponsive and awkward on foot and rely on comic 1 punch Knock Outs when it comes to melee, no depth at all. Although Niko had some nice moves. EDIT: You could block, dodge, counter, do combos and perform double team moves. Mugging and interrogating were pretty much built into the melee system also, and all on a PS2 game. If that kind of melee system was in GTA, a lot more people would choose to fight instead of using guns all the time. Pains me to see GTA focus on joke type unrealistic sh*t and not a decent melee system. When someone pulls out a knife on The Warriors, you're in trouble. If you're outnumbered, you're in trouble. How it should be. Edited May 26, 2017 by Cosmic Gypsy Payne Killer and LazlowsucksiloveslutS

dante財閥
Any Yakuza game without question. The whole franchise is centred on the brawling system and no one's done it better to be honest.

thatstupidbug
Take a wrestling game and its gameplay, remove the "ring" and everything related to it, and what you have? Ehrrr.... NO, not THAT game... I'm talking about a) the hardcore "one vs all" mode in Shut your mouth and Here comes the pain B) the beat-em-up "Revenge mode" in wrestlemania XIX Payne Killer
Algonquin Assassin
GTA IV. I don't like fast paced gang up style systems where you can miraculously beat up 20 dudes without breaking a sweat. What I like about GTA IV's is it feels unpredictable from one fight to the next. In Sleepings Dogs, The Warriors etc I always felt overpowered and in control without much fear I would get my ass kicked despite the overwhelming odds of enemies at times. I can't count the number of times I've been pulverised just by two guys and other times risen against the odds to beat multiple enemies. Plus the counters are awesome. Far more varied than the 3D era. Good Hombre, Femme Fatale, Payne Killer and 1 other
jollythecat
Yeah Yakuza 0 is pretty bad ass. It's just a little too much fighting, walking down the street to get to an mission objective and you have to fight 5 gangs on the way there. Still fun though, some of those finishing moves are quite brutal.
Leftist Bastard
I'll have to go with the Arkham franchise. It just feels and looks good in every which way. Stylish, rhythmic and rewarding. It's simplistic but deep if you want to master it. Mister Pink and SmokesWithCigs
Mister Pink
Yeah the Batman games have a refreshingly good fighting system. Like LB said, simplistic but deeper if you want to master it. One other fighting system I adored was The Warriors.. Do I even need to mention Sleeping Dogs? I think tommy vercetti took karate at the ymca when he was a kid either that or he learned from a madman in prison. the warriors Arkham series super double dragon(supern nes) or double dragon advanced marshal law from tekken cj wei shen although thread starter didn't like his melee I though it was pretty fluid I would say nikko but I didn't know he had a melee sytem until after I beat the game. I didn't pay attention to the tutorial early on. Mister Pink
chronic lumbago
San andreas could be exploited easily by just smashing the button. The nostalgia though when making your way to SF's fight club by accident with a 6 star wanted level on your ass with cheats. Oh yeah, Niko was great and his fighting style fit him well. GTAIV just had that special something. Edited May 27, 2017 by fashion Algonquin Assassin

LazlowsucksiloveslutS
It is pitiful that Yakuza series is PS2 exclusive. GTAIV's combat sucked. It felt robotic/mechanical. It wasn't challenging at all, it was too easy to beat up two or three gangsters at once. I did like counter moves however. Johnny and Luis should have had their own fighting styles, instead they just recycled all of Niko's moves.
