lil weasel
Well, I would imagine that the Publisher had the Story Writer and staff think up various "nicknames" to apply to the various cahacters to give clues as to their actions in the story line. As is easy enough, CJ short for Carl, and Johnson the third most popular name. Big Smoke, and his cigars, also having the alternate meaning of "BS" for his "stories". Ryder for his constant Riding of CJ. Sweet, for his easy going ability to let the Street Gang disintegrate. And so on. All the names are just Fictional, and the publisher and writers felt appropriate for the Copyright, not infringing on any persons living or dead, as the saying goes.
