RoadRunner71
Do you guys know what's up with the mobile phones and planes? Why some companies don't let you using while others don't give a rats? The other day I was thinking about which probably was my worst flying experience ever. We were going back from Sabha to Tripoli, after having spent about two weeks in the desert, and consequently I was friggin tired and just wanted to sleep. So we took a seat in the plane and, surprisingly for me, the whole plane (which, by the way, was full of people) was using the god damn mobile phone. So put yourself in my place, trying to take a nap in a hell of uncomfortable seat, and with dozens of phones ringing and doing annoying noises behind, in front... everywhere! The thing is that we flew about 600 km or so and we didn't crash or have any problem, so where does the obsession (and I'd even say 'myth') respecting the risks of using mobile phones in flight? (apart of the annoying they could be for the other passengers) Also, have you had any bad flying experience?
GTAfiveFAN
Do you guys know what's up with the mobile phones and planes? Why some companies don't let you using while others don't give a rats? Somebody with more knowledge on the topic, please feel free to correct me, but some people believe that cell phones interfer with the plane's systems, but some airlines insist that there is no proof to this and they allow passengers to use their phones. I hope this cleared some things up As for your question about bad flight experiences, I've only flown a couple of flights and they were all fine. I've flown U.S Airways four times and thought it was good. I actually had a better time flying AirTran and Southwest merely because the flight attendants were laid back and fun

I flew U.S Airways the first time back in 2004 and by that point I was 7 turning 8. I actually spent hours a month ago trying to figure out what type of plane I flew on the trip back to Philadelphia from Orlando by analyzing a picture of me in a Disney world scrapbook of me in the cockpit (the pilots let me sit in there after we landed, which is why I liked U.S Airways ) I eventually determined it to be a Boeing 737-300 or 737-400, and did that feel satisfying the finally come to that conclusion

Outcast
I'm a frequent flyer, long-haul not just domestic or regional. Nowadays as my homebase is in London, I fly British Airways to the US and Asia. BA CityFlyer from London City Airport takes me to Amsterdam and Barcelona for work. I used to fly United from London to LA quarterly from '07 to '11. Spent all my birthdays during that time on a United flight. Even had thanksgiving dinner on a United flight from Chicago to San Diego (business class so the dinner wasn't half bad, the big fat turkey sandwiches and soup was surprisingly good). Here in Asia I tend to spend my weekends home in Taiwan so I'm on a Mandarin Airlines E190 every friday evening and monday morning. I love the Embraer E-Jets though so I enjoy my time in them. I've also flown on the Emirates and Singapore Airlines A380s several times, choosing to fly via Dubai and Singapore instead of my usual Shanghai/Beijing/Hong Kong transit points. f*ck, I might as well just list out the airlines I've flown. It'll cut down on my incessant rambling. - Air France - Alitalia - British Airways - BA Cityflyer - Cathay Pacific - China Airlines - China Southern - Continental (before the merger) - Dragonair - Emirates - EVA Air - Germanwings - Hong Kong Airlines - KLM - KLM Cityhopper - Lufthansa* - Oasis Hong Kong Airlines (defunct) - Mandarin Airlines - Singapore Airlines - Swissair - Thai Airways - Trans-Asia Airways - United Airlines - United Express - Virgin Atlantic - Xiamen Airlines *I spend half my time in the air and the only time I've ever had my luggage misplaced was with Lufthansa from London to Stuttgart. In their defence though, they did find it and delivered it to me later that day. @GTAfiveFan: Most consumer electronics won't affect essential control systems in an aircraft, I've even kept my phone on for an entire duration of the flight. I was actually flying with my dad a couple weeks ago and he didn't have his seatbelt on the entire flight and I had my phone on. It was like we were tempting fate lol. Kidding aside, the FAA are relaxing the rules a little so pretty soon you'll be able to use your ipads and kindles during take off, taxi, and landing. Well, the last time I flew, going back from Jfk Airport to the Madrid-Barajas Airport, with American Airlines some people were using notebooks. By other hand, I remember there was some kind of football or another sport team in the plane.
Ari Gold
List of airlines I've flown on (from memory): • Qantas • Ansett Airlines • Virgin Blue • Singapore Airlines • Olympic Airways • Emirates • Austrian Airlines • Lufthanza • JAT Airways Mind you, every flight I've been on was paid for by my parents when we went on family holidays; my first flight was when I was nearly three in 1996 when we flew back to Europe, so unfortunately I can't remember what happened on that flight but I'm sure I annoyed at least one adult that day. This Saturday and Sunday will actually be the first plane trips I'm paying for out of my own pocket; I'm flying up to Sydney and back with a few friends to watch a football game. My first plane trip since 2008, so I'm actually excited. EDIT: Just remembered that we flew with Cathay once.
Outcast
Qantas reminded me, I used to fly Air New Zealand quite a lot pre-'08 from London to Hong Kong. Stefche I guess you're in Australia? It makes sense you've flown Cathay. What did you think of it?
Ari Gold
Loved it. We flew with them once, in business class in 2007 and I found it more comfortable, and found the service to be friendlier and better, than that on Emirates. Last time we flew with Emirates they miss-placed our luggage and booked our seats on the wrong flight on the way back (second part of our return leg, from Dubai to Melbourne). Dad's luggage ended up in Moscow, mum's in Honolulu, but luckily it was in Melbourne by the time we arrived.

GTAfiveFAN
Your not the only one who's jealous Valenta haha. One goal of mine is to fly all of the major countries flag carrier airlines and fly other big airlines like American Airlines, Delta Air Lines, or United Airlines. A couple years back I would have laughed at the thought of me wanting to fly, but now I realize how safe it really is
RoadRunner71
Pff, personally I don't really like flying in commercial flights. Most of the times I've done that were long distances and most of the flight was over the sea, so there wasn't much to see. I guess that if I could have flown in first class the flight experiences would have been somehow better
GTAfiveFAN
On the topic of airlines, what are some of your favorite liveries? I consider the Lufthansa and the new United livery similar, and I love them both because they seem very business oriented and clasy I love the new American livery, I like how its plain all the way through until the tail I think this is a different livery, which is good. Also, I like how they are still using MD-11's commercially, and the KLM livery looks nice on it

Ari Gold
The current JAT Airways liveries are disgusting and bland, but the older ones back from the time of Yugoslavia looked beautiful, in my opinion. I would've loved to fly on one. They had that livery from the 50s right until the late 90s; I think those two photos were taken in the 'mid 80s. My dad showed me a photo he took once when he was going back there on holiday around 1984 or 1985 of one of the 727s parked next to the terminal at Split Airport. I'll have a bit of a search now to see if I can find it and share it with you guys. EDIT: Found it. Turns out it was a DC-10. Sup3rman
Heres the footage of one of the B29 superfortresses named Kee Bird that crashlanded in Greenland, and was then found again almost completely okay. They replaced the engines and it worked, it was ready to be flown to some airport but unfortunatelly this rare plane caught fire and was completely destroyed. The wreck was left there on the icy lake and is since the early 90s stayed there, some times submerged, sometimes covered with snow and visible. RoadRunner71
It's amazing how it could survive that many years facing such an extreme climate condition. I wonder if the cockpit still worked without changing anything. Kinda reminds me to a B-52 bomber that also crashed in Greenland with some nuclear bombs inside, back in 1968 (see Thule Accident). Army NBC recovery teams were deployed to clean the area, as a result of a leak of the nuclear load of the bombs.
GTAfiveFAN
Great post Sup3rman, a nice short documentary. It was depressing watching the video after reading your post because I knew all the work those guys put into the plane was just going to go up in flames. The B-29 truly was a key part in WWII and it's a shame that they couldn't get that one in the air.
