Any aviation enthusiasts here?

I'd like to start off by expressing my sadness at the discontinuation of the Airbus A340, easily my favourite long haul aircraft

leik oh em jeez!

They're still making the A380, right? Personally I find the Antonov An-225 to be quite beast. I'd definitely want to learn to fly if I had the money, but I can barely afford to sit at home right now.

yep, A380 still in production and will be for a long time to come. a bit worried about the stress crack problem on the wings though, not to mention those Trent 900 engines exploding but I think RR may have fixed the problem

A topic like this is long overdue. As a huge aircraft geek, I approve.

A350-800 - what they're replacing the A340 with, not really liking how the similarity to the Boeing 777.

I can understand though as engines are becoming more powerful and reliable and also fuel efficiency is a big thing so 4 engines arent really justifiable anymore

While I've never been too big on commercial jets, I'll say the An-225 is a beast. Replaced the AT400 with it in SA and had so much fun running it into buildings jihad style.

Now WW2 and Korean War era fighters, high altitude bombers, dive bombers, etc, now that's what I'm really in love with.

Late 1950s through 1970s interdictors and multi-role aircraft for me, thanks.

BAC TSR2, for instance.

im not much of a fan of cold war era british military jets, they look..unsophisticated compared to similar aircraft in the US arsenal.

BAC made some pretty great looking commercial planes though, the Concorde and VC10

how'd you like the A380?

i've flown on it several times with both Emirates and Singapore Airlines and both from LHR to DXB/SIN

I like it a lot because the seats seem to just be that little bit wider while still keeping with the industry standard seat configurations

Love it! The Emirates one was superb, I flew economy and it was like flying premium economy with any other airline. I also flew the Lufthansa A380, was nowhere near as good as the Emirates one but was cool. They are so quiet.

I've always loved the A-10

Pretty much took the concept of making a gun and then building a plane around said gun and ran with it. Also it can take a lot of damage and keep on flying.

user posted image

It ain't the prettiest plane, but it doesn't have to be.

Only Antonov i've seen is the AN-124 unloading lynx helicopters for the RAF up at Durham Tees Valley Airport (MME) absolutely one of the most massive cargo aircraft i've seen, cant even imagine how big an AN-225 would be close up

I've always had a fascination with Vietnam era planes, especially the F-4

That's a beautiful plane, and my APUSH teacher had the honor of flying many a mission over Vietnam in one.

EDIT: I'd have a Luxurious interior whilst maintaining a standard airline livery. Stewardesses would wear standard uniforms, just... a little nicer moto_whistle.gif

You mean powerplants? Depending on the Aircraft, standard choice of RR, GE, P&W etc. My favourite combination is the 777 with the Monstrous GE90 option. Like a flying Hotrod. muppetmaster_karma.gif

I miss BA's Elegant old livery sad.gif

If you mean price, a used 747 SP is around 12-20000000 dollars, plus up-to & well beyond that figure for fitting-out, dependant upon your tastes. The sky's the limit! If you want a brand new A380 with all the toys; garage, marble jacuzzi, 22.2 UHD cinema, virtual floors with terrain recognition, high pressure draft-free AC with scent replication, gimballed beds and of course, a Platinum Pole for off-duty stewardesses, wink.gif then expect to spend around 20 times that figure. Hangering, permits, crew, fuel, pilots, security, maintenance etc, should run you around 20% of that per annum- wether you use the plane or not.

So, get Flyin'...

I've always liked the Mig-15 and Sabre F-86. It's basically a jet engine with wings and a canopy strapped on. I love the inlets at the front of them... very neat.

Just love how smooth and uncluttered they look with no engines on the wings.

Definitely, Lurch. Simple and effective.

Must have been quite a thrill for those pilots jumping from their P51s and FW 190s to the first fighter jets.

Then we come to this, one of the closest things to a flying human, the FusionMan jet pack. Basically a wing and some jets... of course, you need to jump from a plane to get going but then you've got powered flight for a while. Pretty wild. Not necessarily a plane, but I think it's awesome.

Smaller jets always intrigue me more than the large fighters. I think their maneuverability and possibility of higher power to weight ratio, in general, is appealing.
