R*. Do you even care? (Extended Shadows Distance)

It's happening for a while now..but still R* just keeps adding new adversary modes instead of fixing bugs/glitches.

 

 

Edit: 6/19 Issue still not fixed

This is happening at least since two patches ago. They stopped doing PC-specific fixes for a while now, only small simple ones, so I wouldn't expect this to get fixed at least soon. Maybe with Gunrunning.

Hmm. I remember reading somewhere that the Extended Shadow Distance slider is backwards. So turning it all the way down, really extends the shadows farther, and turning it all the way up really is the lowest quality effect.

 

Is this true?

You need to have High Resolution Shadows enabled ( On ) in order for Extended Shadows Distance to work.. since patch 1.37. Not sure if it was intentional.. probably not.

Yeah that's what I heard too and I've had mine set to zero since then. Although I can't ever really see a difference between it set to zero or max and either way, my fps isn't effected. Edited by FourFingersOfFun

have you tried running game as admin? And changing settings after you get into game rather than on landing screen?

Yeah, I've been seeing as lot of this one lately every time it rains--kind of a "can't unsee it once you notice it" bug. Considering Nvidia themselves have said it's on R*'s end, this really needs to be fixed:

 

- [MightyMax] There is an odd texture on the ground when raining, and after rain stops (additional video clip). It is believed to be a circle dithering issue. Update: Nvidia replied to me and they have confirmed this issue resides within GTA V's graphics engine. NVIDIA or AMD drivers are not the cause. [Jax765] It's not as extreme for me, but I do notice the bad LOD dithering on flat grass. Almost certain it wasn't the case at launch. [DentureDynamite] I can also confirm this bug.

+1 Case in point--one of the last patches, 1.38, only addressed one PC-specific issue:

 

General / Miscellaneous – PC Only

* The length of the boost ability on the Rocket Voltic is now the same on all platforms and no longer varies by framerate.

Yes it is true (http://gtaforums.com/topic/808542-extended-shadow-distance-opposite-works/) and I am pretty sure R* has not fixed this yet, so I just leave the slider at zero (0).

I have a same problem too!

If, i move the slide max is it change something in the game? I can't see changes.

Same here! Seems like this option is broken, I searched everywhere and there is no solution about that.

 

Also with the last updates the game have horrible draw distance (everything on max) especially the vegetation you can see how the bushes and the trees pop up from low to high polygons!

Mine keeps resetting itself to minimum and greeting me with a prompt about unsaved settings.

One strange thing I noticed: with this setting at minimum, shadow_distance is 1.0 in settings.xml, at maximum it is 2.0.

Maybe it was supposed to go from 0.0 to 1.0 and the game engine ignores values over 1.0.

Most other distance related settings, for example MaxLodScale (extended distance scaling) go from 0.0 to 1.0.

I'm pretty sure that you are right, even in the command lines the max values about the distances goes from 0.0-1.0f  this means 1.0f is the maximum.

The question is do we need to increase this slider every time when the game is started and in general does this slider change anything?!

Well, I found that this slider (Extended Shadows Distance) is not only broken but it works in reverse way, so every time when the slider is full this means the shadows distance is minimum.

The value of Shadow_Distance should be 1.00000... if it's 2.00000.... this means zero TF.

 

After all day tweaking I found that this slider should be full, max and 2.0000.... from settings.xml is the correct value, 1.0000... is the minimum, it's most noticeable at flying with jet or helicopter!!!
