How do I get rid of unwanted/unearned rank?

True story.

 

I only started playing online mode a little over a week ago (PS3). I'd reached rank 9 after a couple of days, then did this Fleeca raid somewhere up the west coast with one other player. That got me up to rank 10, but once I'd bought my newly-unlocked sniper rifle ... my top screen rank meter just kept ticking over and over.

 

It was in its thirties by the time I shut down and went to bed that night. By next time I logged on it had settled at THREE HUNDRED AND FORTY. No kidding. I did not do that and wouldn't have wanted to, even if I could. I am not one for unearned rewards and frankly, this glitch has brought nothing but trouble. No wonder I get kicked from so many jobs when anyone can my stats are those of a typical rank 10. I wear 330 fake points on me everywhere I go. It becomes very hard to make legitimate progress in the game.

 

Has anyone had anything similar happen?

Do I have to nuke the whole character and start again?

You can send a ticket to Rockstar explaining it and they should put your level back to its normal value.
