GTA:SA in a Windows XP virtual machine (VirtualBox)

For fun, I thought I'd try playing GTA:SA on Windows XP. This is mainly to do with the issues that come with GTA:SA on newer OSes (mainly mouse issues).

There's not many others trying this (as expected) that I saw from Googling the problem I'm having, but documentation of this problem goes way back to before even 2011.

Here's my problem: when I click "play", nothing happens. The "loading" cursor flashes for a second, and then nothing. Steam reports that I'm playing the game for about two seconds, and then it stops.

Host environment:

- Windows 10 Home x64

- RX 480 (8GB)

- i5-6500

A full list of hardware is in my forum signature.

Guest environment:

- Windows XP Professional x86 (Service Pack 3, and latest updates from automatic updates)

- VirtualBox (with guest additions (including experimental Direct3D) installed)

- Latest Steam version of Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas

VirtualBox settings:

- 4096MB memory

- 4 CPUs (using only 1 has the same problem)

- I/O APIC enabled

- VT-x and AMD-V enabled

- Nested paging enabled

- 128MB video memory

- 3D acceleration enabled

- 2D video acceleration enabled

- Windows DirectSound audio driver

- ICH AC97 audio controller

- USB 2.0 (EHCI) controller

I've done all the typical fixes (deleting the settings file, etc.).

Any ideas?

Update: I've downloaded the DirectX June 2010 redistributable and extracted it to my desktop. I searched through all the CAB archives to find the version of DirectX nearest to the time of the game's release. This version turned out to be Jun2005_d3dx9_26_x86 (x86 because my installation is 32-bit). Inside that, there was a file, d3dx9_26.dll, which I put into the game's installation directory. I ran the game again, and got an error message! We've made progress! This application has failed to start because XINPUT1_3.dll was not found. Re-installing the application may fix this problem. Okay, so at least we have an error, and putting in that DirectX DLL actually did something. My next step was to search for an XINPUT1_3.dll. I found one under C:\Program Files\Steam\bin, which I put into the game's installation directory. The game launches! I got into the game, however the second something 3D tries to render, the game crashes. I can get up to the "Francis International Airport" text, and then the game crashes just before we see CJ taking his bag in the airport. Okay, so it has to be something to do with DirectX. I've tried d3dx9_43.dll, d3dx9_32.dll, and d3dx9_26.dll, and none of them let me get past the main menu. We have a lead, at least?

I tried everything to get the STEAM game to work, on Windows 10.
[The Disc version would not even be detected by Windows 10.]
I finally gave up on the third try with STEAM, the Windows 10 corrupted the [GAMES] file, it refused to play at all, so much so that I could not uninstall, which is "required" to reinstall.

After a total of 20 minutes of "actual" play it failed, and I took the refund for it.

Windows 10 corrupted the file so that I could not uninstall.

Corrupted what file?

Also, I play the Steam version (latest update; not downgraded) on Windows 10 perfectly fine. Install, launch, play. No problems whatsoever. The only problem I have is that the mouse sometimes stops working after I unpause the game, but I fix it by pausing and wiggling my mouse a little bit and then unpausing.

Windows 10 corrupted the [GAMES] file

Sorry, I still don't understand. What "games" file? gta-sa.exe? The ACF file Steam uses to understand game installation statuses?

I am not a programmer. I have know idea what file(s). I know the game ceased to start, and could not be uninstalled by any normal approved method. And STEAM was unable or reluctant to help restore the operation of the game, it needs to be uninstalled to reinstall the game. Which by the way STEAM did not mention in the go-around. I found that elsewhere.

We're going a bit off-topic now, but you shouldn't uninstall Steam games like you would uninstall them normally. If you right-click a game in your Steam library, you can uninstall it there.

Yes, it has been damn so long time, just wanting to know if you did succeed at the end?

Nowadays, there has been some improvements/fixes(mod) for GTA San Andreas running on windows 10 such as SilentPatch and Widescreen Fix or the Mouse Fix itself if you want. If you have the steam version, you can use a downgrader to be able to install mods and stuff.
