Vice City PS2 Reprint Disc?

Recommended Posts

Lit Logistics

Thanks for the help, everyone! I guess it is just cleaned up and resealed like new. I am not an original collector, so I was just purely curious!

EDIT:

Video is UP, unlisted so only we can watch it ;) Surely this can explain what I am trying to convey here. Anybody wanna explain this? Where are these copies from?

Video link:

[Youtube]https://youtu.be/IFsNKjC5y8Y

Here is the official eBay listing I bought it from:

http://www.ebay.com/itm/112300524534

Seller has multiple copies of other GTA games listed, the San Andreas listing ended but I am sure it will be back soon. Where is he getting these from?

I don't think I need to film gameplay for you, the game plays and looks fine. I have my ps2 connected to an HD TV via some component cables. So it's jagged as expected but everything is fine?

Gameplay through HD component cable on HDTV:

Hello!

So I've mentioned this a little bit in another thread where I am getting the original GTA releases of the games on PS2 from eBay.

I have purchased Vice City for a very cheap price brand new and factory sealed, although it is in a flimsy case without the memory card holder built in. I have an original non-working copy of Vice City to compare it to, the outside labeling and the disc itself is word - for - word and label - for - label the exact same as the original, just a different case. Quick research and poking around different forums indicates that Sony stopped production of the memory card holders in their cases around 2007-2008. Vice City was released in 2002, so this feature missing from my case alone indicates a reprint, as well as the seller has MULTIPLE copies.

My main question is this, could there be any issues with reprinted games? Like missing or changed content?

My second question is that I am not getting a PCJ motorcycle to ever spawn behind the glass across from the biker bar. Do I have to progress further in the game? I've started doing the Love Fist missions with Kent Paul.

My third question is that for some reason I remember the Easter egg of hearing snippets of GTA III'S radio adverts in the static of Vice City's radio when switching stations. Was this from alternative versions that I've played (PC, XBOX, etc.), Or was this also in the first edition, because this Easter egg is not here on my current version.

I've also noticed there isn't a lot of dialogue when Tommy crashes into cars. I've heard him say things like, "Someone isn't going to be happy about this." Is it just how the game was?

Thanks!

Thanks for the reply, but I know all of that information lol. It is the official first version, matching barcodes and all. I just wanted to know if reprints themselves are a type of bootleg or what? Because I might just be remmebering later versions of the game that I've played compared to the original release.

Update:

I was able to get the PCJ to spawn after starting the biker missions.

There is no machete spawning on the bridge to starfish island though 🤔

On the left of the disc there's a playstation logo. Above it should say SLUS and some numbers. If you can post the numbers exactly as they appear we should be able to identify which version of vice city you have.

The SLUS code doesn't have any difference, anyway he has USA v1 if I'm not wrong.

Yes guys, trust me. I've been in pursuit of the original v1 releases for ps2 to just play them as they were originally released. I even have a thread in the San Andreas forum where I just posted a fairy tale ending on how I just found the original release of San Andreas for $2.00 on ps2 in a random junk shop near my residence.

So I've done enough research to know every original SLUS and barcode by heart. I have the v1 release of vice city. It just seems to be a reprint. As I researched more, nothing should be different with reprints. They are exact clones, besides their seals and case...

It was brand new Y-folded plastic-sealed in a flimsy case, it did have a white sticker seal on top, but it was not the original ps2 release hologram sticker. This is another clue to a reprint because sony stopped with those hologram stickers around the same time as the memory card holders. This case has no memory card holder, as I mentioned before.

Production of the memory card holders stopped around 2007-2008, and vice city was released in 2002. So unless it's a reprint it would have that memory card holder in its case. (Rough research found on various forums :p ) It was just cheap and brand new. Manual and map, crisp and clean disc. There are other original hologram-sealed versions for $109.00 on eBay - what a joke lol!

The SLUS is 20552, barcode ends with 1458. Disc ID itself on the data side also matches the V1 information listed online.

As I stated here in an earlier post, I DO have an old v1 release of vice city that does not work anymore do to too much damage to the disc. I compared every label and number to the original non working game and it's all identical. The ONLY difference is the actual case of this new copy I got. Flimsy with no memory card holder. Research shows that's how all reprints were released.

Everything in the game matches V1. Tear gas behind Washington Beach, etc. Full of Haitian slurs, all music is here. Game started with Michael Jackson playing as I entered that white admiral after Tommy tells Rosenberg to get some sleep.

I think that because I haven't played the game in so long, where the last versions I played were PC and Xbox and mobile, that I am remembering things that were later added to later releases, such as this GTA III Easter egg of hearing its radio adverts in vice city's radio static while swithing stations. Apparently that does not exist in the V1 version of Vice City.

Everything about this points to it just being a reprint of V1 Vice City. Identicle clones.

I was unfamiliar with any idea of any old game being reprinted. I can make an unlisted YouTube video for you all to see exactly what this looks like if you're interested, compared to my non-working OLD V1.

The game was not re-printed.

The Supplier of the cases for Sony is AmaRay. You will find this molded either where i'm pointed on newer production PS2 cases or at the bottom of the inside (Below where the disc sets) if you don't have either the PS stamp or the AmaRay stamp, the case is a cheap knock off.

( Trust me LOL this picture was a bitch to take....)

Here's what to look for with the disc. Now on the back if you do NOT have the PS symbols than your disc is a knock off.

I need some kind of confirmation since I don't have my PS2 at the moment. I know that you can disable the splatters from rain and blood in the PS2's Vice City Double Pack/Second Edition (v2.01) from Trails option in the Display menu, now I saw some time ago that you can do the same thing on the original/first version/edition (v1.40) in a different way. Someone can confirm it?

"After playing around a bit on both the Double Pack and Haitian-Friendly versions, I've found that you can toggle the splatters on or off by using the Trails option in the Display section. You turn on the splatters by turning the Trails on and turn off the Trails to turn off the splatters.

You can do this in the Original Version also. If you turn off the Trails at the beginning of the game you will get rain and blood splatters. To turn them off, you turn on Trails then turn them off again."

What I'm trying to say is that it's just super weird how this vice city was packaged. It couldn't have been resealed because the disc is CLEAN. Is it possible to polish a disc 100%? Seller also has multiple copies. I'll take pics for you all to show you.

Everything matches perfectly but the case itself that it was sealed in. Disc is clean. Has PS logos. Booklet and map were also crisp and clean. Brand new.

I figured out all of my issues with the PCJ and machete. Was looking in the wrong spot, and the PCJ appeared after starting the biker missions, that's not a problem.

I have V1 vice city but the packaging was weird. How could such a crisp and clean disc be sealed into a flimsy case to make it seem legit? I'll get pics when I can.

When I first started the game I had turned trails off but was still receiving spatter and droplets. I made a few saves with trails on and off. The spatters disappeared. I continued playing the game without trails on making saves as normal and the spatters returned.

I think they were always meant to just be there regardless of trails.

last thing i can think of is that the seller repackaged it because the case was broken or something because as far as I know version 1 was NEVER reprinted due to: The song running with the night being removed from flash fm starting with the pc and double pack onwards, the guns being renamed and have slightly changed models(example:In the original release the pistol is called the colt 45) to avoid copyright issues and from 2003 onward the game removed all references to Cubans and Haitians instead calling them gang members.

Anyways enjoy it! ☺️ Version 1 is the best version of vice city on ps2.

Seriously that is very lucky, you have a v1 copy new like the first day in 2017, 15 years after it release on PS2. Also I don't know if is possible to polish a disc in 100% though, but who cares? Everything is in perfect conditions, even the book and map are in perfect conditions and included. If you look for it in second-hand places maybe the map or the book is not existing anymore and the disc scratched in some way, but you have a very, very lucky copy, just enjoy it as hell.

That box reminds me of the PC GTA3 box as that held single disk as the first disk was in a white paper envelope and held in place by the clips that hold map and poster in place.

Maybe its an early copy of ViceCity because as you will remember 3 and VC where playstation 2 exclusives when they first came out, only hitting Xbox and pc months later.

Well, I was almost upset because I've used my component cables on all my HDTVs with the ps2, and although it produces a better image, it does not really upscale it.

I've tried both original 4:3 and 16:9 with widescreen enabled from the menu.

The game is SUPER jaggy, that "stair stepping" aliased effect. This is apparently a common problem when playing ps2 on HDTVs. The game honestly looks better on PC and Mobile, but we all know how edited those versions are ;)

If I try to film from the TV the picture will look cleaner than it really is, but I'll see what I can do.

I have also tried the old composite cables on an old "tube tv" and although it's blurry/obviously really dated, the resolution looks best because that's what the ps2 was built for. In HD it's just that - HD. Showing what everything REALLY looks like. I've gotten used to it playing so much now, until I go on YouTube and see PC videos of gameplay, and see how much better the game looks lol.

Exactly? 100% brand new, even. Which is why I asked if it was even possible to polish a disc 100%

I could just send a message and ask but when I last messaged this seller about selling the trilogy on its own listing it took him almost a week to reply, and he probably wouldn't be too open about where he got all these games lol.

^

Your case is not original, the seller is able to re-seal and clean discs. The case you have is Amaray correct? I do have one game with the same case style and it's Driving Emotion Type-S.

So the seller is putting these PS2 games together from loose materials here and there.

I was just unaware of this practice of resealing and reselling. I guess if someone were a true collector this would really upset them.

Myself, I was just REALLY curious! ;) Thanks for the help, everyone.

Putting the sleeve and disc into a new case and resealing is an obvious answer. However the seals on the game do not look like cheap reseals. It WAS sealed with that Y-folded plastic with a generic white security strip on top!?

Quick reference:How to spot fake factory sealed PS2 games on eBay

He has multiple copies of many games. Where is he getting the discs from? The disc is original, no doubt. And also brand new (looking).

Is it really possible to clean a used disc back to 100% brand new quality? Are there now new machines to produce homemade Y-folded seals on games with generic security strips?

This must be some professional resealing. Maybe even complete disc resurfacing of multiple copies?

Here is the listing for GTA III, says 10 copies available and sold along with Aragorn's Quest":

http://m.ebay.com/itm/Grand-Theft-Auto-III-Black-Label-Aragorns-Quest-PS2-LOT-NEW-SEALED-/112300890056?_trkparms=aid%253D222007%2526algo%253DSIC.MBE%2526ao%253D1%2526asc%253D20150519202348%2526meid%253D32e71e4122f641f5b00268a3ced6f839%2526pid%253D100408%2526rk%253D1%2526rkt%253D25%2526sd%253D112286519087&_trksid=p2056116.c100408.m2460

The funny thing about it is that for that above listing is a straight negative feedback saying, "GAMES ARE OBVIOUSLY RESEALED AND NOT BRAND NEW - DO NOT BUY!"

If this seller is somehow getting cheap reseals, the discs I got were in 100% brand new shape, and the seals spot on, even if the white strip at the top was generic and fake?

I went ahead and left neutral feedback, "Discs are in NEW condition, but games are not in official Amaray PS2 CASES. RESEALED! :'("

Yes, it's possible to re-seal with Y-Folds. It's 2016 people have figured out how to wrap plastic. I even have one.

The one on the left is a promotional Legend of Zelda Gamecube game. It's sealed with Y-Folds, but this is a re-seal....the one in the middle is the 2015-2016 trilogy run copy of Grand Theft Auto 3. The right one is the original copy of Grand Theft Auto 3 with the original packaging and security sticker.

Let's take a look at the Y-Fold on the Original PS2 copy of GTA3...

Now look at the Re-Seal on the Zelda game.

You can see it's close, but obvious differences in the machine folding process.

Ignoring the EBay topic you posted because it's a bunch of drivel and nonsense...

The best way to to tell is obviously feeling the plastic in person. You'll notice the re-seal is much tighter than the original. You can SEE that in the first pic I posted. The plastic is also a bit thicker on the re-seal you can feel that with your fingers.

Is it really possible to clean a used disc back to 100% brand new quality?

Hell yes you can and you don't need a $20,000 machine to do that either. You can buy a disc cleaner for a mere $150.00 that will polish your disc just as well as that chick behind Wal-Greens.

Here is the listing for GTA III, says 10 copies available and sold along with Aragorn's Quest

Right, you've mentioned this many times. This is the first hint you're buying used copies. The Seller obviously has a store and he can't sell Aragorns Quest so he's giving them away.

If this seller is somehow getting cheap reseals, the discs I got were in 100% brand new shape, and the seals spot on, even if the white strip at the top was generic and fake?

Re-seals and professionally cleaned discs are this guys business practice. He seems to take pride in His work and goes that extra mile to provide the customer with a product that is mostly original and in great condition. That's the difference between "Brand NEW sealed" and "Original Sealed Copy"

There are MANY ass clowns on EBay buying the GTA trilogy at Wal-Mart for the PS2...for $15.00 and parting them out on Ebay for $8.00-$10.00 a game, which is sh*tty. This isn't one of them. The original case was likely to have had broken tabs and the Seller replaced the case with the first available one he had which is what yours ended up to be.

I went ahead and left neutral feedback, "Discs are in NEW condition, but games are not in official Amaray PS2 CASES. RESEALED! :'("

Why?!? He sold you a LEGIT copy that he made sure had ZERO defects and had it se-sealed and re-cased so that you didn't receive a copy that has all scratched up and loose inside a broken case. You paid less than TEN bucks for it which is the average for a copy of that game anyway. You can always transfer the sleeve and game to your other copy. It's not as if you got bent over on the deal.

IF you want an Original copy SEALED you'll pay around $40.00-$50.00 Don't pay anymore than that be patient.
