The game you are joining has a different targeting style?

What does this stand for? I'm using free-aim, and I can play with someone using the auto-aim?

If I join his session and have a pvp warfare with him, then he's going to shoot me with auto-aim?

You'll both have auto-aim.

Your aim will revert back to what ever the lobby your joining is set to.

If you play with a controller you'll have auto-aim too, if you aim with a mouse the other players will be using auto-aim if they use controllers so they will have an advantage.

whenever i try to join my friends i get a notification that their targeting preference(auto aim) is diffrent to mine(free aim) and it kicks me to story mode so i can change it. I could have sworn that on last gen i had the option to either go back to the lobby i came from which is free aim or join this new lobby and automatically switch to auto aim with the press of a button.

That's debatable. Auto aim is superior when aiming at targets in a car or behind bushes, etc. But auto aim can also be a mess and aiming at a target far away instead of the guy standing next to you, it takes more time aiming for headshots and it can be countered by experienced keyboard/mouse-players.

R* used to have it set so that you could join any session you wanted, and then it auto-switched back to your original settings once you left that session.

However(!) R* since stopped that (not sure which DLC it changed), so you have to manually keep reverting to Story Mode to reset your settings, before rejoining GTA Online. It's a royal pain in the gluteus maximus, especially when you have good friends that you help virtually every day (in my case, with Daily Objectives) and they use settings different from yours.

R* really needs to restore the auto-switching feature--it was very helpful!

Changing it back is faster by going into "Creator."

true, I hate auto-aim just for that. I hate aiming at things I'm not prioritizing, like cops.

Silly question, can you set your targeting priority in the interaction menu to "players" to avoid aiming at cops with auto-aim?

it gives you a prompt most of the time, but sometimes it would give you this message to go to story mode. another one of those well known bugs in a triple A game that are left unpatched forever.

thank you rockstar.

Your aim will revert back to what ever the lobby your joining is set to.

Not always. I joined a free-aim lobby last week and my setting got stuck on free-aim. I had to go into creator mode to change it back to auto. And why is it that you can't change it in the game itself but have to go to story mode or creator?

PvP would be "unfair" if you have different targeting modes.

it's greyed out in lobbies so you can't join free-aim the just pause and switch it to auto-aim.

When I join the wrong aim type I just join a friend who's in a lobby with my preferred aim type and it switches back.

No harm in allowing you to change it and having the lobby override it. I was in an auto aim lobby with no option to change out of free aim. It sounds a bit crazy to have to go into creator to be able to change it. And how are you supposed to change from partial to full? Again, sounds a bit like bad design to me.

oh I didn't know that, I guess you can join an auto-aim lobby with free-aim chosen but not vice versa. Yea you're right, the option shouldn't be greyed out in auto-aim lobbies... Silly R*!
